Sounds like a more positive than negative live in Hawaii. That’s awesome ! we’re processing getting a condo (second home) in Waikiki area. Too bad I just find your channel few days ago.
@@yunhui722 no worries at all and congratulations that's super exciting! 🥳
@ thank you so much for detail info and being honest about the area. Here in Chicago, not much going on after the holidays but cold (We’re in Waikiki and Maui for 2 weeks, a week ago) and I can’t wait to go back. But I’m not going to excited until the closing date. lol
Questions, We have inherited a place "single family home " in Hilo, Big Island. With all the expenses, pro and con, we still hesitated to move there. Our choices are either rent it out, move to Hawaii, or cash it. My partner really wants to move there due to safety, lifestyle and climate. We are retired couple with good income and saving, currently living in Florida. My partner receives a full coverage from health insurance and benefit from VA hospital. Our only expenses would be the entertainment, phone, gas, electricity, internet, car insurance, home insurance in Hawaii. Our question is the monthly food cost for two people "not including going out for dinning"? We normally shop at Costco and assume in Hawaii the cost be 15-20% higher. For the Big Island, the cost of all expenses any better than other islands. Much appreciate.
Given that you and your partner have a good financial situation, it sounds like you would have a pretty good quality of life in Hilo. Hilo is a really nice place with a great community and very nice people - it is very rainy there though so you just want to expect your lifestyle to change somewhat given the weather. Groceries are more expensive here, we have a family of 3 adults and 1 child and we spend roughly $600-700 on groceries per month shopping at Costco and our local grocery store.
@@hawaiisrealtor Very good information and tanks again. Possible visit the island in March and stay there half of the year to figuring out if it actually suites our needs and lifestyle.
Born n raised and live on the Big Island. Lots of mainlanders/Foreigners move here and expect to change the culture. Not adjust to it. That’s sad and a big no no. This place is special. Reason why I never left. Now I’m all grown, have a home and properties, and kids. Just responsibilities. Its even more important to keep this place the way it is and not change it into a money cultural hell hole. Unfortunately, the way the world is with all the influential social media crap, it’s not that hard to turn it into that. I fear for my kids. All the best to you and your family 🤙🏼🙏🏼❤️
Hard to be out-of-shape here? Have you not looked around? I love Hawaii, but I disagree with that point.
Yeah not 100% of people are in shape, that's not what I'm saying. Compared to where I'm from though, there is a stark contrast.
I almost moved. My boyfriend lives in Makaha. To me that feels a bit like where I'm from in north Florida.. He is considering university on the mainland though and I don't want to pay to get out there then turn around and come back to the mainland so fast. He owns is makaha place tho so if he just goes to UH there's no rent.
Good info. Complex process explained clearly.
Appreciate the comment, thanks!
Hi moving from Vegas to Hawaii how did you get your car there ? Great content thanks
@@Readysetgolive thank you! A lot people ship their cars here either through Young Brothers or Matson, but I ended up selling mine and buying a different car when I got here.
Aloha from da No-Sai. Living in “paradise” is 100% worth the price IF you can afford it. But if anyone decides to move here, please be humble and respectful and understand the culture. Realize it’s a collective culture not a “*it’s all about me” culture. Volunteerism and giving back to the community means the world. This might be America but IT IS NOT. It feels like a different country. It is not like any place on the continent. The patriotism and wave flagging thing is not a thing here either. If you study Hawaii’i history you will know why. And for Gods sake please do not honk unless it’s a life or limb situation.
I love this place. It would be so perfect! It’s -32 Celsius which is -26 Fahrenheit soooo brrrrrrrrr. I may not be living the dream, but at least I can binge watch all your Hawaii content😊

I really enjoy walking videos. That path you were on - right at the waters edge - do you happen to know if bicycles are allowed? I didn’t see any bikes but I’d like to find out
Hey Rhia, so technically all sidewalks are off limits for bikes but I do see people riding up on there from time to time. Just depends on if you want to risk it or not. Police are generally pretty easy going especially in Waikiki given that it's more of a tourist district.
Price seems good but no parking is a bummer
Stumbled on this video and enjoyed your list and perspective. It does sound like you might be in need of more Hawaiian friends, though. Aloha 🤙🏾
Appreciate the comment man, thank you! I'm always down for more friends, Hawaiian or otherwise.
You ought to stick to real estate and avoid pretending to be an economist.
Appreciate the feedback, thanks Paul! Just curious, was there something specific I said that you disagreed with? Would love to know!
Trump will destroy the markets period.
Hi Bob, thanks for your comment! Can you explain your thought process? Would love to know! I would agree that we're in for an interesting/bumpy ride the next several years when it comes to the economy, but I don't think this is necessarily Trump's fault. There are many forces that impact the economy and markets tend to correct over the years, and we're long overdue for a correction.
@@hawaiisrealtor My thought process is no it isn't entirely trump's fault. But by him refusing to be the bad guy, he will insist on forcing the fed to lower rates which in turn will cause more inflation. Low interest rates is the majority of what caused inflation. Quantitative easing also is bad for inflation, but it compares little to the damage of the low interest rates. Also both Trump and Biden were guilty of quantitative easing. I'm not sure if a correction will happen? It is hard to say. At this point I feel as we are headed more towards hyperinflation, but on the other hand I believe the fed will step in and increase rates, because if they don't the fed will lose all their power.
I see many native Hawaiians moving to the states because of gentrification.
Yes I've heard this as well. With prices going up the last several years with inflation, it's caused a lot of people (Hawaiian and non-Hawaiian) to move to less expensive places. This is happening all over the world unfortunately.. Hopefully we can get inflation back in check soon so that prices stop going up so dramatically. The best way for people to stay in Hawaii is to purchase a property (or other appreciating asset). From what I can tell, it seems like people end up having to leave the islands because they never ended up purchasing a property when presented with the opportunity and prices kept going up so eventually they get priced out of the market.
You are really naive if you think the price of energy is going down. Gas and oil companies didn't back Trump so that they can make less money. And the overall, the federal workforce increased by an average of 0.9% per year between December 2016, just before the start of the Trump administration, and December 2020, just before the president left office. The mortgage rates will go up with the tarrifs causing inflation to increase and the feds will have to raise rates to keep it down. I live on Maui and I can tell you that you will not see the cost of living to go down under Trump. Unless you make a lot of money his tax plan will give a tax cut to the wealthy and thos under 500,000 will go up. The only thing we have going for us in Hawaii is that we are the farthest away from Washington DC.
Hi Makila, thanks for your comment! It bums me out to read your post.. but I know how you feel, sometimes things can feel pretty grim. We don't know how any of this will play out, but I'm trying to be optimistic so let's wait and see what happens. What I do know is that the laws of supply and demand say that when supply increases and demand stays constant, prices decrease. So yes, with an increased supply of energy (oil, natural gas, etc.), prices will come down. Energy companies can still lower their prices and make more money at the same time, this happens when the volume of energy sold increases, which would happen in this scenario given Americans would be buying American energy instead of energy from other countries. I don't understand why companies making money is somehow a bad thing - that's what businesses are in business to do, no? Would you suggest that energy companies operate as a non-profit or would you prefer that they go bankrupt and send the world into an energy inflicted economic free fall? We need businesses to survive and be profitable for economic security and national stability, among many other things. Mortgage rates tend to follow the 10-year treasury bond (with an added spread of about 2.5% currently) so if tariffs are inflationary like you're saying and the FED raises the federal funds rate, that will put downward pressure on equity markets (like the stock market), which will have an inverse effect on bond yields which would lower interest rates. There are a bunch of things that impact our local economy, but the biggest thing that is hurting Hawaii's ability to keep real estate prices in check is our unwillingness to create an abundance of housing supply to outpace demand and our unwillingness to allow more contractors to get licensed, these are two significant bottlenecks that I have experience with. Our sloth-paced processing of permits and unethical procedures by which we approve/deny new contracting licenses is causing havoc for Hawaii residents. If the county of Maui, for instance, were to enact policies that say home and apartment building permits must be processed within 30 days or less (or the contractor can begin construction) and make it easier for contractors to get licensed, this would drive an overwhelming amount of inventory to the market and we would see lower prices. These are not impossible problems, we just have incompetent "leaders".
Love wa’ahila! Proposed to my wife up there!

Planning to move around spring time. I want live to in Waipahu. There seem to be a lot of warehouse job in area and rent to me is cheap. I don’t care about living in the ghetto or working 2 jobs. I grew up in urban areas San Diego and Miami so ghetto don’t scare me too much. The reason I chose Hawaii because of the Mountains and Beaches. I always bounce back and forth from Florida to California. Now I want to be steady and stay in one place. I see all the homeless and the locals complain about housing. Is it really that bad? Are the jobs they’re posting on indeed fake? I’m also a convicted felon I heard that they’re a 2nd chance state. It’s been since 2016 since I got into ANY trouble. I don’t do drugs or smoke. I love nature and keep to myself. I’m not looking to buy property just rent and build myself up from there. Any tips for felon when comes to housing it’s harder for them to rent? If anything I’m going to make it work.
The housing market is pretty expensive here. On average, rent or mortgage payments take a much higher portion of people's overall income than in other less expensive areas so that's definitely something you'll want to plan for. I'm not sure about the jobs on Indeed, but Hawaii does have the lowest unemployment in the country so I'm sure you can find something when you get here. I'm not too familiar with jobs or housing for felons, but what I've learned is that Hawaii is all about relationships, so if you show someone (a hiring manager or property manager) that you're reliable and trustworthy, that will go a long way for you and people won't care as much about you being a felon. I wish you the best of luck on your job and home search when you come out here!
I’m a retired vet moving there in June/July timeframe. This video is greatly appreciated. I’m so excited to come back. Thank you ☺️
That's awesome, glad you enjoyed the video and welcome back to Hawaii!

I like Waikiki now and forever! Aloha
@@RockOnHawaii It's an incredible place!
Would love to see 👀 if there are rent to own places in Waikiki. Maybe like rent in the building first to try it out, then purchase if it’s good.
I have seen rent to own options before but they can be hard to find. With the condo market weakening on Oahu, you may have an easier time negotiating something like this with a seller. Just be cautious about getting into an agreement like this, some of these kind of deals can be somewhat predatory towards buyers as a way to get you to put down a large down payment in hopes that you forfeit it so just be mindful of that and read the fine print. You may want to also consider finding a seller who would be open to seller financing, those are typically easier to come by and offer more protections to the buyer since you take title to the property.
A bee joined you for a bit, free ride!

@brycelacroix617 Glad you enjoyed the video! Hope college in Florida goes well for you. I think studying finance is a great and versatile career path that will serve you well when you're in Hawaii. The most important thing I would prepare for before you arrive is just making sure that you're financially stable before moving here because Hawaii's prices are quite high compared to the mainland. Private equity firms buying up everything sucking every bit profit they get ! Greed 🤔
I haven't heard of any private equity firms buying up insurance companies, but it wouldn't surprise me.
Yeah, it’s pretty shocking when you’re about to spend over a million dollars on a home, and the neighborhood looks like a dump.
@@JWH808 Yeah that's definitely frustrating.. We ended up going with a fixer upper house in a good neighborhood. Don't think there's a right way to go about it since our method has come with a lot of headaches too. Merry Christmas btw! 🎄
