    Hey Charles, what a beautiful church/organ. You are so clever being faced with that organ for the first time and producing such great music. I loved the finale as I guess you did judging by your smiles. You seemed to gel so well with the resident organist. Great vlog, love watching you ❤

    Thanks for the upload. I wonder if this amazing cathedral will ever be finished. You can see from the design that it began in the Romanesque style and continued in Gothic. That actually makes this building more like the ancient cathedrals of Europe which is many cases were begun in the 11th/12th century and completed hundreds of years later.

    While this organ isn’t the original Aeolian-Skinner organ it’s still a very beautiful and fiery organ that fills the cathedral and fully utilizes the building’s natural acoustics. Dobson did build an impressive organ unique to the church. You have to listen to the organ from a musical perspective not a tourist perspective. The ensembles are great,the flutes and strings are beautiful and bright,the bass reeds like and rumbling and the diapason and principals are brilliant and clear. The organ is well voiced and very well rounded.

    This was after the fire but before the Cathedral’s 148 rank Aeolian-Skinner Organ was reinstalled. Last I researched, the Skinner was still being cleaned and restored,a project that should be completed by next year. The organ will then be reinstalled and used for services once again.

      TOTALLY AGREE! This organ is NOT an English Cathedral organ, its just big and loud. The Skinner organ in Yale's Woolsey Hall is closer to a true English Cathedral organ.

    • @drbobdrake
      @drbobdrake 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      The Æolian-Skinner had been modified beyond repair. It was no longer the instrument of the Dupré recordings. Gutting/removal cost $8 million of the total cost of replacement instrument. The Dobson is a worthy replacement. If you want an in-your-face A-S go to St. Mary the Virgin which Paul Jacobs records on.

  • @joscallinet6260
    @joscallinet6260 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

    Was this video made after the fire but before the main Aeolian Skinner organ was repaired and restored? It's been a few years now since the fire and after the organ had been thoroughly cleaned, repaired and reinstalled to great acclaim. It's now 2024 - this video here must have been made over a decade and a half ago.

    • @joscallinet6260

      @ThatcherNelson and @drbobdrake: Thank you both for your replies. It seems that the Cathedral of St. John the Divine continues to be cursed by bad and even EGREGIOUSLY CARELESS STEWARDSHIP of its property. It's amazing to me that a structure made almost entirely of granite could catch fire as readily as St. John's has. You'd think after its gift shop went up in flames in December 2001, that those in charge of the care and upkeep of this landmark structure would have learned their lesson. That YET ANOTHER FIRE has taken out the organ A SECOND TIME only twenty-three years later is beyond belief! At this point the cathedral might as well mothball its Aeolian Skinner organ and make the temporary Walker organ a permanent fixture. It sounds good enough to where MOST attendees at the Cathedral wouldn't notice the difference! I'm sure the insurance company underwriting this latest fire-damage claim must by now be VERY annoyed by St. John the Divine's remarkably poor oversight of its property and will surely raise its rates accordingly, if not outright deny it any further coverage. Taken together, this pair of fires at St. John the Divine on this side of the Atlantic is nearly the equivalent of the devastating fire that all but destroyed Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris in April 2019 - the HUGE expense and effort that the Cathedral of St. John the Divine on Manhattan's Upper East Side had to put into cleaning not only the organ but also the ENTIRE interior stonework of the church after the gift shop inferno was on a scale proximate to what's now being done to restore Notre Dame.

    The Miller-Scott Organ (built by Dobson) is quite a beast (the big 32' pedal reed is awesome . . . as is the Tuba Mirabilis and the Trompette en Chamade!). The softer stops are equally fabulous examples, as are all the main choruses and mutations, and for an American instrument, it is remarkably 'English Cathedral' in tonal design. (You are probably not familiar with John Scott, who came to NY from St Pau's Cathedral in London. When I was your age, Charles, I turned pages for John Scott at a school organ recital as we both lived in the same town in Yorkshire and John was two years older than me and had just finished at Wakefield Cathedral before heading off for Oxford, and an all too short but illustrious career as an organist and choir trainer. He was an incredible player and I shall not forget watching him, at 18, play some of the most demanding organ music ever written). The Loening-Hancock gallery organ is a wonderful contrast to the main organ, speaking directly into the nave. How wonderful that you can have a Dobson at one end and a Taylor & Boody at the other (from your home state, I think, Charles - Virginia?). The Kellner temperament of this tracker organ would make for an interesting duet with both organs being played simultaneously, especially if a piece was in F Sharp Minor! I am envious that you got to play these world-famous organs in New York! What an experience for you: bravo! You are a lucky dude!

    I love these Pipeorgans Charles. Loved your explanation I think my favorite sound is Diapason. I think it is all beautiful and have played the pipe organ in our church all by ear of course but I also used the pedals root and 5th played lord of the dance. No mistakes to my knowledge I was only 11 years old at the time. TRMAN CLARK was the organist at the time and sat in the Choir while I played and when I was finished with the Hymn, He said to me don't come back until you know how to play. LOL Jealous I think. Cos he had to study and I didn't and did just as good a job as he would have. As I mentioned I also used accurate bass pedals as I already had knowledge of root and 5th. LOL That is my story and I'm sticking to it I hope you had a laugh. However I too have a channel here on TH-cam and I play the Genos2. So I still can't read notes and I am challenged every day by the recording aspects and sound. Do I use reverb or not in my voice. I like it but other professionals don't like reverb too much. They say I have a nice voice and I don't need reverb. Anyway. I got sidetracked I loved your display I loved the horn you used at around 8:50 minutes in the video. It is a fantastic organ and you are also a wonderful organist. Wish I had your skills but now at the young age of 66 almost 67 next month I am still playing by ear. Join me for a train ride on TH-cam. LOL you might have fun fasten your seatbelt. See you next time Charles. Are you the church organist here in this church or elsewhere? Also, I wanted to add I love Theatrical organs as well. They are amazing. The Genos2 has all of these sounds and more it is unbelievable too. $7000.00 you could own one yourself. Take Care Charles I enjoyed the video so much. BRAVO. I loved the last bit where I hear you actually play AMAZING. I can tell where your heart is always.🌹❤🎼🎹🎵🎶🎵🎶🎹OH I loved the Bells and the chimes. GREAT LITTLE SHOW THANK YOU BOTH!
