Bandcamp does have a band page for a group named Arcane Algorithms, just has one demo listing, no other info. Perfect name for a darkeave act
Great episode. I liked all extra discussion beyond just the story, more about the theory of writing.
Thanks!
I found this story more engaging and enjoyable than some of Smith's scientifiction stories, but Lovecraft's "In the walls of Eryx" easily trumps this one.
Yes, I agree
As someone with some grasp of German, I couldn't suppress a chuckle when you read the German words. By the way, the German "V" is pronounced like an English "F".
Lol, we struggle to pronounce in English let alone any other language
It's interesting that one of you saw the parallels with the Merchant of Venice; I was reminded of the Shakespeare play when I read this story and wondered if CAS was inspired by the character of Shylock.
It could be - I'll see if I can find any ref to the Bard in the letters
My rendition of a Mythos bingo sentence: “There arose an ululating cry within the non-Euclidean structure, complete with gambrel roofs, which broke the sepulchral silence of the night illumined by a gibbous moon.”
Haha, excellent, in fact it is Cyclopean!
Id think the witching hour is midnight because its a liminal time between days. If I remember correctly the times of midnight and noon are neither a.m. nor p.m. So midnight falls into neither day. I've also heard the witching hour is actually an extra hour that witches can access during the exact moment when it's midnight.
That makes sense - especially in a pre-industrial context. Nowadays, most of us rarely experience full darkness.
The Donald Wandrei story one of you mentioned is probably “The Fire Vampires”.
Thank you!
I can't wait to get there!
Looking forward to seeing you!

Why can i never think to work "unformulable" into my writing?
:)
Astounding Stories ran until 1960 when its was renamed Analog Science Fiction. Under that name it is still published to this day.
Thanks!
Can you do the walls of eryx?
Yes, it's on the list, thanks.
@@innsmouthbookclub465 my take on that one is he's talking about how cults work. Can't see the rules, the maze keeps changing, and never can escape. Plus a reward you never benefit from.
Interesting take. I wonder what actual cults were operating in HPLs time, would be a good talking point
Well done gent's! I'm wearing my trousers without pants.
Thanks - hope they are not tweed!
Smith's first published collection was named after the poem Star Trader which, similar to the main character's poem, waxes lyrical about travelling the stars.
Thanks!
One of my favourite Smith stories.
Ours too!
I've heard lots of anecdotal evidence that Smith made his own wine, but never heard actual proof. Is there any mention of that in the HPL or Derleth letters?
Ah that's a good one, we shall investigate!
I know the story doesn't necessarily support this reading, but I'd like to think that the reason Nylissa died in Malygris' youth was because she was destined to be resurrected by him far in the future. And if she had died after a long life of marriage to him, he wouldn't have later pined after her and his youth, so the noment told by the story wouldnt have happened
Oh that's nice, I like that! Thank you!
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Velvet_Darkness_(band) :D
Delicious!
Thank you 😋
This was a good one! A couple of things. From my own imagination, the flopping things seem to me to be, although hideous and monstrrous, things that didn't come through to our plane quite right, or not complete, so were even more foul and hideous and disgusting than they might have been on their own plane. And another thing, hey, I have referenced myself in two of my stories for giggles and ballyhoos. One was in The Lights Beneath the Sea where one of my fictitious tomes was discovered among a host (not a whole page but a few lines) of blasphemous tracts and troubling scriptures. "Vlek’s account, long considered by sober unimaginative readers to be a work of second-rate fiction was not without unmistakable similarities to certain details of Lovecraft’s own exploits." All in good clean family fun!
That's a good thought... not quite fully formed. And with "alien" modes of locomotion? Haha nice - can't beat Lovecraftian exploits lol
I've never read any Lovecraft but I have read lots of Clark Ashton Smith. I might start listening to this one day, maybe after I re-read a book or two.
Yes! My fortnightly Clarke Ashton Smith fix!
Some day you should do a discussion of high house in the Mist ( a personal favorite) and dream quest.
Good idea!
The theremin is your instrument for silly woo woo music of the 60s-70s in movies and TV.
Oh I do love a good theremin!

had the pleasure to have a chat with Thomas at last years ILF, bought a comic and he gave me some free goodies, lovely chap! Looking forward to meet again this year :)
Nice one!
Well done.

Also, to give some context of the outrage about the delayed football game, the Berkeley/Stanford rivalry is one of the oldest college rivalries in the US and has been going for over 130 years. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_Game_%28American_football%29?wprov=sfla1
You mention this story won 2nd place in the Wonder Tales reader suggestion contest. Any info on what suggestion won 1st place and who wrote it?
We'll see if we can find out
Since you're always making Doctor Who references, wanted to point out that the blind guy attacked by the harpies and Jason and the Argonauts was Patrick troughton, doctor number two
Yes, good spot!
One of CAS' very best stories. Good commentary.
Absolutely! Thank you
Cheers!
Apparently we are on similar levels when it comes to geek Hood ...however, I thought the name of his story was" a colder war"
Yep, my mistake. It wouldn't be so bad if I hadn't had the collection containing it open in front of me at the time. Brain fail.
Great discussion guys. Lumley is, by far, my favorite mythos writer. I love his stuff because it’s more pulpy and he asked “what if we could fight back?” His mix of S&S and the primordial dreamlands is some of the best stuff ever.
Thanks! Yes, agree, especially on the Dreamland novels.
Ha, I just bought some 10mm gargoyles for my Fantastic Battles army!
You are referring to "Manneken Pis" ( 'Little Pissing Man') in Brussels, who I would never have thought of as a gargoyle but it could work :)
That's the one. Yep, not a gargoyle as such but it has a little spout lol
Sad news indeed
Ofcourse it's a band :) th-cam.com/video/7va9PRZYbsU/w-d-xo.html
Of course! 😆😆
Great episode fellers. glad to hear the mention of Fargo and its possibly centuries old Sin-Eater. I am stoked for TD season 4 after the first episode. all the Thing references get my tail waggin'!
Thanks, yep looking forward to TD4, have to switch my subscriptions at the end of the month lol
This was a great episode. You could unpack that season for hours. As was done on the I Cant Stop Watching True Detective page that was thriving for several years after it aired. I was active on that and it was fantastic. I have seen the series through 30 times, 30 actual times straight through. I agreed with al you guys were sayin. But there were a few things that realy added to the impact of the show and provided a lot of information. I'm thinking of the many superb cameo scenes with characters that appeared only once for a minute or two but delivered stellar unforgetable perforanes, like the old back woman, and the Ladoux cousin mechanic, Minister Theriot, and so many more. That's what sticks with you, the nonstop belly punch of these top scenes. And of course the various scumbags they were iterogatting. Charlie Lange, I could watch and listen to him all day. And te two black cops interrogatin them, fantastic. And then we come to Reginald Ladoux. Wow!. The last scene of that episode where he is parading through the weeds in high tightie whities and a gas mask hose hanging from his face and carrying a machete! As a writer mysef, I have to bow down at that shit! The editing of the episodes was brilliant, no fluff or filler. And the ipact scenes like Rust going into the abandoned shool and finding all the devil traps that amost loked like trhey were growin there! Covered with moss and al green, except for the brand new fresh one he fud, and the music in that. It's worth a rewatch for that scene alone, him gazing at the thing and holding it up. Of course I was on board for al the yellow king stuff, and the creation in Carcosa! The artist that made thoses devil traps for the show sells them on his art page. And of course I had to have one!
Yep, and all beautifully filmed
In season 4 EP 1 the guy dancing in the snow is Travis Cole, Rust Cole's father.
Oooooh!
Nice to see you back! It is an excellent documentary.
❤ Wow. I read my first Lovecraft book in freshman year of High School. It was the Colour out of space. I was 13. It altered the course of my life. Thank you for sharing this essay with us! His tentscles be upon you.
Thank you! Seems to be a common age for discovering HPL!

Growing up Space 1999 was My Favourite Gerry Anderson Show, Now it's UFO!😁
I think I saw more episodes of 99 back then, it had a regular Saturday slot afair
I was a full-on adult when i finally saw UFO. great show. "That episode" when Straker shows exactly how committed he is to the mission really got to me.
Thanks for another great season!
Glad you enjoyed it!
For no particular reason or connection to this TV show itself, I was reminded of the show Dark Skies from the 90's which I really enjoyed. And of course X-Files, another favourite from the 90's
I don't think I ever watched Dark Skies, I'll check it out.
I think it was fairly shortlived and cancelled, which reminds of the great show "Space: Above and Beyond" also cancelled way too soon :(@@innsmouthbookclub465
Another great season with many interesting discussions of the stories. My favorite tales were: A Rendezvous in Averoigne, The City of the Singing Flame, and The Testament of Athammaus. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!
Thanks! Yep, can't disagree with those choices
Great season. Thanks
Thank you!
