Adam Mickiewicz- poem Uncertainty read in English, version translated from Polish
Introspective romantic poem about ambiguity and complexity of feelings. "Uncertainty," by Adam Mickiewicz, Polish poet of the Romantic era. Love, or friendship? Translated from my native Polish, by me. Have this poem read in Polish too.Kochanowski and Mickiewicz in Poland are comparable in importance to Shakespeare and Byron in Britain, or Walter von der Vogelweide, (earlier, Medieval) and Goethe in Germany. This is one of the most iconic poems in Polish literature.
Adam Mickiewicz, Uncertainty
If I don’t see you, I don’t sigh nor cry,
I don’t lose my senses when you are before my eyes,
Yet when I don’t have you before my gaze for a long,
I am lacking something, I desire to see someone,
And in longing, I ask myself this question:
Is this friendship? Or is this loving?
When you disappear from my sight, I can’t even once
Recall your image in my mind?
Yet often I feel against my will
That it is standing close to my memory.
And again, I pose this question to myself:
Is this friendship? Is this loving?
I suffered often, yet I didn’t think I could
Come and let my sorrows pour before you;
Walking aimlessly, not watching my path,
I can not grasp how I arrived at your door;
And entering I ask myself this question:
What led me here? Friendship? Or loving?
For your health I would sacrifice my life,
For your serenity to hell I would descend,
Yet in my heart is not such a bold desire
To be your health and your peace.
And again I repeat to myself this question:
Is this friendship? Is this loving?
When on my hand palms you lay your hand,
Such dear calmness envelops me,
That I feel my life will end in this light dream;
But I am awakened, my heart throbbing faster,
And my heart loudly asks me:
Is this friendship? Or is this loving?
When I penned together this song for you,
The spirit of poetry didn’t empower my mouth,
Yet to my astonishment, I didn’t even notice
How the thoughts appeared, how I ran into rhymes,
And, at the end, I wrote this question:
What inspired me? Friendship? Or loving?
A new month begun, and a new hope. Soothing power of old love poetry. Twice I posted Kochanowski, poem related to home. Because of floods. Uncertainty, this title relates to my level of anxiety having experienced in recent time having areas like Poland and two states in US affected by floods and fire, and thinking about it, specially those friends who needed to evacuate. And looking at the news. It i nice fro a change to deal with uncertainty of a personal level, a poet of old days talk about not knowing if it is a friendship or love, what a beautiful, pleasant kind of uncertainty to deal with. And a cozy flame of a candle in a warm domestic setting. Flowing ink, burning candle as the opposites of floods and fires on the news. And I am here, appreciating safety of my own home even more.
In the original poem the man, the author addresses a woman, and in Polish the grammar structure is gendered, verbs are conjugated according to gender. So, when I read it in Polish in my voice to the listener it sounds less natural than in English: In English this text could be delivered by any gender.
I consider the uncertainty of the author about his feelings to be love, as friendship is a kind of love as well.
I enjoyed to see the man's hand writing with a quill, I like pictures, movies where the area is nocturnal and lit by candle light. At the end of the movie is the image of Adam Mickiewicz, a sculpture in his honor in Warsaw.

      You are very welcome! Gothic alphabet as introduced by Wulfila was of course based on Greek alphabet etc. Cyrilic was also based on Greek alphabet, so, if you know old letters from old Romanian language, which used OLD church Slavonic alphabet, (correct me if I am wrong) then it is very similar to Gothic letters. Please, let me know when you are done with your translation, I wonder how it looks in Romanian, your version. 🌼

      @@respectkindness-oj6xz I do too! Very much so. Thank you for disclosing, because it is again a surprise. It is of course my experience, and I don't claim it must be universal, but I never heard or read that someone declared such cluster of aesthetic preferences: liking melancholy, contemplation, profundity, things delicate and gentle. Sometimes it seems to me that profoundity and contemplation is fine to people, but melancholy and gentleness is out of fashion ;) :) On youtube of course is possible to find a lot of material for those aesthetic preferrences. @@elzbietadymkova-fuchs3979 i doubt anything to be old fashioned, depends more which antourage of people a person lived amongst, people made different choices in the past and they do that now also. everything humans do is a choice, unfortunately some people were left with no chances to live better lives and choose what feels best for them spiritually and physically, especially younger people that were disadvantaged and vulnerable

      @@respectkindness-oj6xz I agree! There is plenty in the past which is relevant and relatable. The idea of fashion as for ex. intelectual fashion, as relying on temporary, cycilal phenomenon is limiting in perception, taking less in account diversity which is available to us. I need to be more precise here what I meant: I think aesthetic of melancholy is often, probably, confused with sentimentality, hence it is less appreciated. But it is my opinion ( you are not by any means required to agree with it :) ) And sometimes happens that certain aesthetics falls out of public attention, for example there was times when paintings by Artemisia Gentileschi faded from popularity at the end of her life, or Vivaldi was forgotten and rediscovered, Romantic era in music pushed away certain elements of Baroque music (now brought back) etc. Or Marco Polo is popular as an explorer, but Ibn Battuta who traveled trice as much as Marco Polo is rather unknown in the West. Or Bouguereau, the painter once praised, then reviled as "stuck in the past" and style described in derogatory manner etc. now is gaining more popularity in auction houses (Sotheby had auction Bouguereau and his Circle etc). Yes, everything in life is a choice, life among other things can be described as a sum of choices, yet, choices can be twarted, when there is obviously no choice belonging to a given individual, but others make choices for them, or freedom of choices are dimmed by difficult circumstances, emotions etc.

    𐌸 (romanised: þ) is pronounced as the -th- sound in English words such as “healthy” or “worth” The way you pronounce 𐍅 (romanised: w) seems most similar to how it’s pronounced in German. It’s pronounced the same as in English, as opposed to /v/ like you do. You have the pronunciations of 𐌰𐌹 (romanised: ai, IPA: /ɛ/) and 𐌴 (romanised: ē, IPA: /eː/) swapped.

      Thank you for taking time to comment, I appreciate that! As for th, my native language is Polish, and I don't think I will master that ;) in sentences. As for w and v, I don't have my old materials for Gothic, they were not in English, 𐍅 a Germanist never corrected me on that pronunciation.(I have now a book in English) I noticed also that for ex. native speakers of non-Germanic languages pronounce things differently. Very interesting. As for ai and ē, and I mentioned situation about ai and 𐌴 in the textbox, that I took liberties, as I remember as discussion of not a total consent among linguists about it, so, I mentioned that I am not a Germanist, and this is a type of personal time machine. With reconstructed languages, and Gothic is such, even if there can be quite precise reconstruction, I think it is ok, to allow, and not be surprised, about certain level of disagreement among linguists.

      This is a rather personal video, as a poetic hobby like rest of my readings. And a kind of social commentary about white supremacists learning for ex. Old Norse or other old Germanic languages hijacking them for their feelings. They make them it their own, making it often a vehicle to toxic masculinity also ,I made it to my own in this video. Here Gothic sounds more feminine in my version. And as a visual artist by profession, I also think I made a partial statement.

      Thank you very much for sharing your impression! It is interesting, as I see similarities too. I know that Wulfila based Gothic alphabet on Greek, also Latin and some runes if I remember right, and yet to me this script has also similarities to Hebrew, and some letters look similar to Hebrew alphabet. For ex. Gothic A looks very much like Hebrew Ayin, U like Chet, and Greek g looks like Resh and other similar right angle letters (Xaf cafit). Gothic had also some loan words from Aramiac and Hebrew. For example in this prayer there is also such loan word, translated usually as "kingdom" : the word "thiudangardi" in Gothic, (1:01) is literally a yard, or court of kings house, or temple, the same construction is in some Hebrew texts of the Bible. We know very little about bishop Wulfila, but if I ever would write for ex. a short story or so with him as a character, he as my imaginary character would for sure know Hebrew, but not as good as Greek and Latin, and respect Jewish people and their culture, and Judaism as an older sister faith.

I've also noticed some similarities in script, the visual look of it, in georgian, armenian and other more "eastern" alphabets. Indian looks similar to the languages in Bangladesh, Pakistani and others. Arabic languages have similarities. Korean, Chinese and Japanese look different but the sign-based script instead of letters is an aspect that makes them look similar. Humans have done many things in the past. It's sad that mostly bad things have been generationally transmitted and many beautiful stories and wisdom was lost. Very little was preserved. Every human life was a story full of consistent events that they had no opportunity to share, probably because they knew they won't be understood. It's sad that people chose to rather fight against eachother than offer time for things to clarify at their own pace and at their own rhythm without rushing things and without chasing people from behind. People tend to jump towards hasty conclusions instead of trying to feel a more profound understanding of things. Humans are limited and frail creatures, it's important to be merciful and have kindness, especially to those that are disadvantaged and lacked the time and opportunities to obtain the means to survive and had no ability to defend themselves being trapped in a difficult situation and antourage.
