Goodbye Games! Why I Deleted These 5 From My Backlog
My quest to defeat my gaming backlog is well underway! I knew from the beginning that I wouldn't force myself to play through every single game in its entirety if I wasn't finding it fun. That's the core of the entire backlog project: fun.
I decided to cross these games off my list for many reasons I talk about in this video. A couple may surprise you.

THINGS ABOUT ME:
My name is Michael and I want to talk about the good, the bad, and the ugly in the amazing art form of video games. The first game I ever played was Golden Axe on the Sega Megadrive, and I used to sit for hours and watch my dad play games. It wasn't until I got my very own PlayStation that I truly fell in love with gaming. Since then I have been in awe of what can be done in games and I want to talk about and share these amazing things.

Listing Every Xbox 360 Game in One Sitting
มุมมอง 3655 หลายเดือนก่อน
The Xbox 360 had 2152 games officially released for the console. So Wikipedia says anyway. I had nothing better to do with my time so I thought it would be ridiculous to sit down and name every single game released for the Xbox 360 in one sitting. I thought it would take longer to read 2152 Xbox 360 games, but here we are. Was it stupid? Yes. But I had fun. I am so sorry for the pronunciation.....

How Movement Shapes Your Favorite Games
มุมมอง 1877 หลายเดือนก่อน
Sometimes a gamer can be playing a game and something doesn't feel good, but for the life of them, they could not tell you what. A lot of the time this feeling comes down to the way the characters feel to control and move. This is all about movement. The thing that makes you feel like Spider-Man. It's super important for developers to get movement feeling buttery smooth for a game to feel fun. ...
The Most Beautiful Mystery of 2022

I was looking through Xbox Game Pass for a small game to play and finish before my subscription ran out, and Beacon Pines was the one that caught my attention. Edge Of Eternity Could Have Been So Much More

Edge of Eternity is a turn-based RPG from Midgar Studio inspired by JRPGs like Final Fantasy. I had the pleasure of playing this game when it came to Xbox Game Pass and was pleased with my experience. The game is good. Not great, but good. I felt Edge of Eternity left much to be desired. This ambitious story can't be told with the resources they had available; too much was crammed into one game...

did u lose the game saves or the games themselves being locked out?
I didn't watch whole video but I hope your trolling
Terrific level design? Are you kidding?
u are supposed to enjoy the game while playing, not after u finish it...
Great video :) love your positivity and your overall welcoming attitude
Thank you! I like to try and be positive about most things so I'm glad that comes across
I started playing all the game in my backlog last year and I’m doing great I started with the og Xbox games then the 360 and then the Xbox one on advice would be try to play different genres that way u don’t get burnout of the same type games
I stopped playing this game during the cat quest after the first cat ran away, and Cloud said “This sucks.” He said exactly what I was thinking, which told me everything I needed to know. The devs know exactly how terrible this padding is, and they just don’t care. Square-Enix just doesn’t make games I’m interested in anymore. They all look the same, and feel the same to me. I actually thought I just didn’t enjoy games anymore until Baldur’s Gate 3 came out.
Is it just organized religion or just simply belief systems much like how japan struggles with old and new cultural clashes
I'm working on my backlog this year too! I made a separate TH-cam channel for streaming longer games (the company is nice), and I made a shortlist of spooky games to focus on in my own time in October!
Good luck getting through it! Which spooky games are on your list?
@@Emelenyt There's a bunch, I'm most excited for Hollow Knight and Crypt Custodian :)
Now I want to play Disco Elysium after reading the comments. I do own it. Bought it cheap after watching a game recommendation video.
Hi! I like your video. I feel like I am entering a gaming phase. Problem being my family owns lots of games and I don't know what to start playing first.
That sounds great! If you're someone who is new to gaming then I would probably suggest starting with games on the shorter side to get used to different types of gameplay. Though, if you like reading then it could be good to seek out games that tell stories in a similar genre to any books you like. Whatever you choose, I hope you have fun!
@@Emelenyt Hi! So my husband helped me pick a game. Super Mario Odyssey on the Switch. I was just playing it but had to stop for a bit.
@LadyKitsunetsuki fantastic game! Easy to beat as a noob and extremely rewarding for those that master the mechanics. Might I recommend my video on movement in games that goes over this
You only have a backlog if you think you need to play/complete games. Just let it go and play what you feel like.
Lol that “damn that is a good walking” was pretty funny. Thanks for the video. It was pretty good. You gained a subscriber
Glad you enjoyed it! I appreciate your support ☺
I've personally been using Backloggd to log all the games I have yet to play and played. Currently Sitting at 129 games left. Been playing Fire Emblem Awakening and Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak. I'm only counting games I have payed for or free ones I would really like to play. Since there are a few games I have had my eye on, I set goals to clear a certain amount of games before I can purchase them, so as to not add to the log too much. I plan to start Katawa Shoujo and The Awakened Fate: Ultimatum next.
Interesting games, but unfortunately my video card only has 1GB of video memory. But luckily, I recently discovered an amazing service called Boosteroid, where you can run games even on your Smart TV! It has a huge library of games that even GeForce Now would envy. I highly recommend giving it a try!
the statement about the map feeling useless. I agree but for a different reason. To me the map just gets overly confusing sometimes - sure after a while you come to understand how to spot difference between the area you're in and other areas but the way it's semi-transparent and everything overlaps makes it hard to look at sometimes
Love point & clicks, RPGs and of course Final Fantasy ones are the best. Working through a bit of my Steam library and actually enjoying it rather than letting the pressure of a backlog get me down. I just need to stop replaying FF7, FF8 and Skyrim over and over :D. Also, don't go back to social media, it is bad!
FF are the best! I'm playing FF8 for the first time right now and I just got to Ultimecia's Castle. Been a great game so far! And social media is bad, I'll just stick with TH-cam
@@Emelenyt it is great fun, though a nit annoying having to get back your skills in the castle 😂
There is no way I could only play one game at a time. Usually I play them alternating and so couldnt finish a single one. Here is a tip for gamers with a similar "problem": choose 5 games from very different genres you like and only allow yourself to switch between those 5 games. You will always have something fun to play while also getting through multiple games steadily.
Also Ghost of Tsushima has massive flow. Great combat Great game
Havent played it yet but Black wukong seems to fail in this aspect. It just “looks” clunky
Is it just me or backlog videos(from reviewing backlog, discussing them, streaming games in said backlogs) are becoming sort of new let's plays of 2024? I kinda hope so, it's an interesting way to innovate let's play genre although I am feeling weirdly left out considering how I think *all* backlog channels had FF games on em while I'm seemingly the only one who haven't played any FF games 😅 (not because I think FF is bad, I don't know it's quality, it's just JRPGs ain't the same as western RPGs like Fallout NV or Vampire Masquerade etc)
I have definitely seen a rise in the amount of backlog videos. That's probably why this is my best performing video. Everyone has their own personal tastes, but if you do get a chance to try out any FF games I strongly recommend giving them a go. I'm currently playing through FF8 as we speak
Fun fact, not everyone has a backlog, some of us are poor so we either have very small backlog(50 games tops) or none at all 😅. Although another fun fact, the poor Steam user version of a backlog is *Wishlist* We have like 500+ games on there 😢 so yeah Ig your comment about 99% of Steam gamers having a backlog still makes sense if you view wishlist as it's own backlog!
Absolutely the wishlist counts! I'm not rolling in money myself, the vast majority of my games are free on Epic or physical pre-owned. Gotta take the games where you can get them!
Just pirat them all lmao
72? huh such a Noob I have 243+ games to play yet i cannot play a single one because I don't have a PC, PlayStation or Xbox 😭
I feel for you 😔 hopefully you're able to soon! I got hundreds of games, these are just the ones I have nailed down to try and get through this year
I had the exact same experience with Octopath. I was fairly into the game when I started grinding a lot and it sucked the joy out. I also realized the only party chatter is at the Inn at VERY specific times in the story and if you miss it, you can't watch that party chatter at any future point. I thought that if the character stories were disconnected, then at least I'd see them interact with each other on each other's stories, but then that wasn't even the case! It was like 8 strangers doing 8 different things. It made their reasons for helping each other paper thin and diminished my investment. I love the unique combat system, so sometimes I think of going back, but I do wish it was uncomplicated gem to me like it seems to be to so many others.
I use steam's "Collections" feature which can automatically divide your games into played and unplayed, my "Pile of Shame". I manually make a "Short List" and have a collection of "To Replay" (which is just XCOM: Enemy Within). Also lets me rate games and lets me gaze upon my vast collection in pride as I do work on it.
So tempted to do this myself. Recently I made a "current focus" shelf on steam so it'll be the first thing I see when I open it up. I keep it at 3 items (right now AC Black Flag, CrossCode, and Fields of Mistria) and since the genres are so different I can choose what I'm feeling without derailing my progress. I've had a bad habit of playing a lot of my games, but finishing very few. Sometimes this almost feels intentional, like I don't want the experience to end because I love the game so much, so I do all the side quests or stop progressing the main story. Tales of Xillia 2, I quit it at the entrance of the final dungeon!!! Crazy! I can't believe I left it there. I guess that could be on my backlog, and I could get an easy win for crossing it off. 😂
Fantastic review, loved this game as a kid.
I'm glad you enjoyed it! I'm thinking of making a longer video on this game now my production skills have improved
So the way I'm keeping track of my backlog is through an app called Stash. My breakdown is currently as follows: 12 games I want, 13 games I'm currently playing, 102 games I've beaten, and 46 games I own but have not played yet, 3 of which are game collections, so more than 1 game. My basic idea is to finish at least a handful of these games and if I don't enjoy them enough to keep them for a second round or new game plus, then trade them in. Only then will I get one of the games I want.
That's a pretty good idea. I've not heard of Stash before so I'll look into it
Dawg you dont want to see my backlog, like 750+ games I was gonna review all of them and make a youtube out of it but I am too lazy for it
750?! Dude, is that like every game you own? 😂
@@Emelenyt oh no I own more
I have realized that I don't enjoy using a strong color to illustrated which games I DNFed, so I choose to make them light gray, with is working out great. It does not send me the signal that I failed, but that I tried and am not interested. A much more positive message :) I DNF Don't starve. I really liked watching "Stump" playing it, so I got it. But I booted it up a few days ago and I was more bored then scared and by day 3 I was waiting for death to come, so I could end my boredom (I died on day 6, because of a miss click that made me die to killer bees). I borrowed a ps4 and am attempting to play my ps4 games like Kingdom hearts 1 and Persona 3 reload. But I am struggling. I am realizing I prefer playing on switch and not on my tv, so it takes a lot for me to boot up my tv and the ps4. It probably does not help that I am only playing kingdom hearts 1, because I lost my save near the end, 10+ years ago and believe I need to complete the game myself. Persona 3 has also been dragging a bit, because I have already completed persona 3 portable and even with the enhancement of reload, it just feels too much like replaying portable, which is the slowest of the persona stories in my opinion. Even if the story is dark, which I adore. I should probably play something "new" and then see later if I would be willing to continue the other games or if I am done. Anyway good luck to anyone getting through their backlog! Even DNFs are important parts of this experience :)
That's a great idea! Using the red kinda shouts "you've failed" whereas grey just makes it kind of ignorable. I get what you meant about booting things up. I sit at a PC all day for my job so the idea of sitting in front of my PC to play games can take a lot of motivation
I finished Octopath Traveler's main story, but didn't want to continue with the secret ending because it was a slog. I think you should consider finishing Disco Elysium, it is so beautiful and deep, kind of desolating and nihilistic, but still extremely enjoyable and has some of the most intense moments I've ever experienced in a videogame (it does have combat).
I'll give Disco Elysium another go at some point with a different starting build. I can do without the Encyclopedia skill
Honestly i get why one would not keep on playing disco elysium, because i did it the same way, I actually believe i quit after 8 hours aswell. However i retried it and honestly to me personally its one of if not the best game ive ever played, however its more like a book than a game, it wants to be read carefully, it wants to be thought about, something that you can clearly see with it being a really political work. Seeing it as a game made me personally enjoy it less because obviously as a game it feels rather slow, but if you see it more like a novel it gets really interesting, especially in the latter half of the game when you come closer to the solution of the mystery, it really picks up. Also you can just go batshit insane and it can be hilarious at times. The biggest Strength of this game is the writing so therefore if you do not want to read this game can feel like a real chore i agree.
That's an interesting way of looking at it. I will try it again at some point with a different starting build, and I'll try your approach
Disco Elysium has a learning curve, but try playing the game with skills you think you would have and engage with the game with how you would be in that situation.
I'll try it out again with a different start build. One that isn't Thinker 🤔
octopath 1 and 2 are really good, its 1 i would suggest you finish. and i agree with most the others
I forced myself to platinum GoW 2018, then i started playing Ragnarok and i can't be even bothered to play for more than like 8 hours, these games simply suck. Braindead gameplay, i don't care about characters, it tries to be a movie way too hard, i want to play game not watch a movie. I dropped it for Stellar Blade and some other games. Also i've been playing Dragon's Dogma 2 recently but i'm not sure if i will come back to finish it, almost 30h played but damn it got repetetive really fast.
Also congrats algorithm seems to push your video to people who watch game video essays before sleep or something
I feel that with recent games. Narrative is great and all but it's frustrating when control keeps being taken away to tell more story. I just want to sit and play! Also, thank you. I'm extremely thankful to the algorithm with my recent videos. Feels like my work is starting to pay off
@@Emelenyt Also it's not really mentioned a lot, but these games cost hundreds of millions to produce. Would you rather have them spend 100mil to get perfect mocap sessions, amazing facial expressions and other stuff like that? I would rather have them make games for 1/3 of the cost, keep their job and make 10 games instead of one. Also about the narrative, all those movie games forget about telling the story with environment, show instead of tell rule- now everything needs to be said and assured, writers take player for idiots like it's some marvel movie
@dorminbased I do feel like studios need to rein it in a bit. I miss the PS3/360 era where bigger studios experimented and came out with fresh ideas. There's a lot of cookie cutter stuff in AAA now Now I'm just "old man yells at cloud"
Disco Elysium took me about 40 hours for my playthrough. It's more like an interactive novel than a traditional RPG. It's all about the mystery of who you are, what has happened and why you're so broken. There's an Irony in relating the game to communism. if ykyk
I think I will revisit it at some point and try a different starting build
We all had experienced not feeling like playing some games. To add to your experience, I have played both Disco Elysium and Octopath Traveler, I droped Disco Elysium but not Octo. I played Octopath at a time when I had more free time for sure, but I also really like Turned based JRPG so I never had to fight the same enemies more than the time it takes to travel from A to B (I did all story elements). Also, I feel the story element was not well exploited but overall, it's a great JRPG (about 25 hours for me) that you missed because you didn't manage to find a nice gameplay loop. Then Disco Elysium, it's just not the right time for this game. I need the game to be mildly appealing at least at this moment in time and the game doesn't want to look good, at all. The voice acting is amazing, though. I also have an issue with the gameplay, it's an immersive RPG so you are free to do a lot of things but by the nature of the game, the options you have are often not what I want to do. In contrast, I played BG3 and I didn't feel the same because the game is at the same time more free and more straightforward. Disco Elysium doesn't have the same scope and it hurts the game a lot, I feel the same with the previous games from Larian "Divinity", unless you have a lot of time and money it's really hard to make this kind of game compelling.
I'm glad you found enjoyment in Octopath. 25 hours is good going! BG3 is definitely on my list to buy. I think I'll get on with it because I'm more into the fantasy setting and it looks beautiful.
Games I put to the back-backlog recently: - Loria: I expected more strategy and less adventuring - Two Crude: I was never good at beat'em'ups, but if I'd learn the controls... - Figment: I thought it'll be a puzzle-box game, and not a point&click adventure - Crosscode: I really need to find WEEKS to invest into this - Baldies: I don't even know if I can make it work on a modern system - Sir Whoopass: I'd need a controller, and a stronger computer to run it enjoyably.
I have Figment but not tried it yet. I played their other game Back to Bed but didn't enjoy it too much so I have put off trying Figment because I thought it would be similar. Knowing it's a point-and-click though makes me more intrigued
Octopath traveler is very worth it
The reinsurance of being okay with deleting games is something i wish i can buckle down but unfortunately i'm in the "Gots to see it through" mentality
There have been times when I decided to stick it out, and I will admit that some of the time it's totally worth it.
@@Emelenyt Agree, you only need it to happen one or two times and then quitting becomes so much harder.
Who even are you and why am i seeing your posts
I'm just some guy. The algorithm I guess
This is a lot of words for "I don't like rpgs"
Far from it, RPGs are my favourite genre, specifically JRPGs
I wanted to like Disco Elysium so bad but i didn’t get very far
It's definitely a slow burn. I'll probably give it another go
@@EmelenytI hope you do!
Honestly all of them are hit or miss, I’ve come to the conclusion I just stick with genres I like so rpgs like the Witchers and gothic games mass effect dragon age etc, survival games 7 days to die v rising etc, and they always scratch my itch and most of the time I feel like they are so worth for the price especially on sale, I’ll buy a new game or something and I pause see what else I have installed think why aren’t I playing this instead
Sticking to your lane is a good way to almost guarantee you'll have fun. I've had the Gothic games in my library for a good few years now but just never played them. Do you recommend them?
Completed 12 games this week. It was awesome!
12?! How did you manage 12?
@@Emelenyt I sat down and gamed. I don't care about 100%ing. Never did. I gamed like I did in the 90s
@@Emelenyt and coffee
Love to see it!
@@Emelenyt I don't stream. Dunno how to prove it
Killzone Shadow Fall as someone who loves Killzone with all my heart is absolutely garbage. The story was absolute garbage.
Is there another from the series you would recommend trying out? I'm all for giving it another go
@Emelenyt Killzone 2 and 3 are amazing games. You can play them with Ps2/3 emulators. Besides that if ur into older games Rayman 2 and Crash bandicoot 2.
Thanks! Crash 2 is fantastic! Best of the whole series imo. Rayman 2 is one that escaped me though. Is it as crushingly difficult as the first game?
Finally! Someone who is brave enough to voice the same frustrations I had with octopath. That was the first game I got for my switch, and I wanted so desperately to like it. Won't be touching any more of squeenix's generically named games because it hurt to burn the last of my games budget on octo, only to be so bored and frustrated with it.
I too was really excited to play it because I had heard so many great things. It's okay, on to the next one!
it's valid to take off a game you already played or invested Any amount of time into. i think all of us have a huge backlog (Thanks steam sales LOL) and it becomes this sort of daunting mission to complete them all to make it worth your while. but you're right in saying it's only worth it when you're having fun, especially when time is such a limited and valuable currency. sometimes i subscribe to this mindset, but sometimes the sunk-cost fallacy comes into play and i also have a mighty need to fully articulate WHY i didn't like a game, so i force myself to complete it at least once and throw it into my "never play again" list LOL.
There have been a few games that I have stuck out before, and was glad to have done in the end. Most games I start to not enjoy, I will stop though. I also think I made a mistake adding games to the backlog that I have already completed before because technically, it's no longer a backlog, just a list of games I want to play. It's all because of my old PSN account haha
I don't have a backlog. I don't procrastinate.
I don't procrastinate, I procreate
Why?😂
I ask myself every day
