I am Australian and I can tell you that in some areas, especially those that were historically strongly linked with Britain in the beginning, there is a strong tendency to judge and dismiss people by the way they speak or behave. Josh referred to Adam Hills... who definitely changes his way of speaking to suit the person and the occasion. He spoke very differently before he gained international fame on TLL. Now he lays on the Ocker accent to sell his persona. Bet if he was talking to Lord Muck he would be more refined. As for no upper class here...we most certainly do have those who believe they are better than the working class. The only difference is no one is born into a social strata that they cannot escape. Those who remain unrefined do so by choice, unlike GB where it can be a real struggle to break the class system bonds. A upper class man who has lost all his money is still considered better than a suddenly rich lower class one ( nouveau riche).
