Spirits Move Me: Ghosts and Female Mediums in 19th-Century America
Hey listener! I'm currently on maternity leave, but to get us in the Halloween spirit, I'm re-releasing my first ever Halloween special about the 19th-century mediums who used their connection to the dead to find fame and fortune. But this isn’t just an old episode repeating: I’ve remastered and re-recorded it to give it a 2024 glow up.
The Exploress will be taking a break in November and December, but I’ll still be dropping new bonus episodes over on my Patreon during that time. So if you like the show and would like more of it, become a patron: they get 1 to 2 exclusive bonus episodes a month, and much more.

Down, down, the Witches' Road... I'm currently off on maternity leave, but to get you in the mood for the spooky season I'm re-releasing what must be my most popular Halloween special to date. Between 1450 and 1750, some 100,000 Europeans were tried for witchcraft, and some of the most intense periods of witchy panic took place in Scotland and England. Most, but not all, of these so-called witc...

It’s FYREBIRDS month on The Exploress! I’m celebrating the release of my second novel, and the conclusion of the NIGHTBIRDS series, by revisiting an old episode from our season on the 1920s: the one where we talk about the women who skirted the Prohibition law. Make sure you listen through to the new epilogue, where I talk about all the ways I used my research on the 1920s as inspiration when I...

The audio made this very difficult to hear…
I have to say this men have know idea what it is like to actually give birth. I know they are doctors , but a rather have a woman giving birth and I did have a female doctor she already did give birth. I had a male to I definitely rather to have a female doctor again. I am just saying they don’t know what it feels life to be a female. His son didn’t only made it to 15 years old.
I'm obsessed with Tudor history and Henry's queens. I love your podcasts and how it covers topics not usually delved into as deeply in other documentaries. My new favorite podcast series!
One minute in, and I can’t stand the way she says menstruation
This was one of the most enjoyable podcasts on this queen and generally the tudors i have ever listened too. I will definitely be taking editorial notes for my astrology channel. Grateful for you content thank you
This family was gentry rather than nobility.
I would love it if the playlists where organized by era
The background music is too loud.
This glimpse into a day in the life of a matrona in ancient Rome is exactly the sort of thing I've been looking for. Definitely going to share this. Amazingly done! Thank you!!
What defines women? That’s a complicated concept! No it’s not! ONLY women menstruate! That is not disrespectful it is just a fact.

Things weren’t just the Tudor Period. Same in the 50’s, I’d say even half of the 60’s. Looking at society today, is it better? Lots more violence towards women it seems. People are so angry! 🙏🙏🙏👵🇦🇺
I liked the fact that she humanized the women but I kind of read between the lines that Kate was being pimped by that guy she got tatted on her arm.
Very interesting video.
Amazing series!!
How do you pronounce Eustace correctly, but not Shap-Wee? Also, the read is all wrong. Singing "I don't thiiink sooo!" In response to a rhetorical question @ 32:02 is glaringly out of place in this subject.
Happy mother's day to you and happy birthday to the darling new Exploress! Thank you so much for all you do for us! Many happy years to you and your family!
How are you a feminist but yet given birth? Hypocrite!
I love hearing from Ruth Goodman, thank you!
that musik is so irritating! not gonna listen to this...
fades in and out badly
Chicago is my favorite musical & place to be, so anytime i hear tales about how the musical came to be, i always tune in for it 😁
What I love all about this, is how the old-time ladies smack feminists in the mouth, everytime feminist try to get the little women on their side. I hear a feminist struggle in their speech patterns when talking about 19th century women. It puts such joy in my heart!😊 I personally believe, that the Little women would look their noses down upon feminist today. They would actually hate y'all! This is wonderful!😊 I've heard different podcasts with feminist stammering in their speech. They couldn't pin the Little women down. 19th century women are just better than modern-day females. Hey, you modern-day females made your lot in life. Now you have to accept it. 19th century women are just better than y'all! The more you talk about 19th century women, the more the little women keep smacking you in the mouth. That's a wonderful thing! Toodles!
This is the first episode I listened to and i am totally fascinated and hooked! I always had questions about daily life for women in the past. Especially issues such as menstruation and toileting etc.. of course family thought I was strange but it’s wonderful to find other curious minds like me about history. Thank you for your research and presentations ❤
Great show!!! So informative and entertaining!!!
Insane😂.
Drowning because your bathing gown had weights in it is insane.
Although it has been said that Henry VII's wish was that his son marry Catherine, Henry VIII married her after his father's death and he became king, when he could have married whomever he chose. Most scholars suggest that their marriage was happy for a number of years.
I appreciate all of the context.
What an awful voice for an audio book…..😫
I never knew what a libido was until I was 52.
Oh someone like me. You shouldv’e seen me when hubby explained the word ‘lesbian’. Well, you could have knocked me down with a feather! I’m 76 🙏🙏🙏👵🇦🇺
Why did you post the same video twice?
Loved this podcast! ❤
I'm orthox wand we still ha e to be "churched" before we go back to chuch when our babies are 40 days old. It is really special. Also, you get to see everyone that that you haven't seen for a while and also, show off your new baby.
Can't wait for the next episode!
We would love to see Katherene as completely blameless. But she is not. Her last testament is highly unreliable, given it contradicts with all the other evidence and was her last chance to save herself. Was she the only one to blame? No. But was she faultless, heck no. This video is an example of someone (most likely an idealist gen z) subjectively applying postmodern values to past history, which is highly problematic. It isn't even very well researched.
Fascinating information. With all due respect I find your voice and inflection annoying.
Yessss I've been waiting for am episode like this! I love Japanese history!
Thank you for this episode❤
I love these podcasts Thank you Totally transports you back intime 👌🏾
Amazing series if this was on 📺 I would tune in weekly just to see how things turn out
Okay, I haven't done a thing all day, and it's your fault! Found your channel this morning, addicted by noon. Thank you!
Well done! and with an unmistakable style and verve! You clearly love this history!
Hey i have to do a school paper on a pod cast and i chose yours! 🎉
You couldn’t pay me to give birth back in that time period.
I avoid getting married to. Lol
The prehistoric mammal Arsinoitherion is named after her -the fossils were discovered in the Fayyum oasis -an area named after her at the time and a popular culture link -1705 opera by Thomas Clayton that introduced Italian style opera to London is called "Arsinoe queen of Cyprus" and is kind of based on several of the queens named Arsinoe - you can even find a facsimile of the libretto or book of the lyrics online!
I love 19th Century women! They were great and amazing! Oh, how I wish I could meet dearly beloved... Such sweet little muffins 😊(*sighs*) I was born in the wrong time period 🥺... Well... May those lovely ladies rest in peace 🌹❤️
