91 The Peace of Nicias
Welcome to another episode of Casting Through Ancient Greece! In this episode, we delve into one of the most pivotal yet precarious moments of the Peloponnesian War: the Peace of Nicias.
After a decade of bitter conflict between Athens and Sparta, the year 421 BCE brought a glimmer of hope for peace. Named after the Athenian general and statesman who negotiated it, the Peace of Nicias was a formal attempt to halt hostilities. But was it truly a step toward reconciliation or merely a pause before the inevitable resumption of war?
Join us as we explore:
The events leading up to the peace agreement, including the devastating losses and shifting alliances that made both sides desperate for a truce.
The terms of the treaty, and how it sought to restore balance between Athens and Sparta.
The challenges and controversies that arose immediately after its ratification.
Why the Peace of Nicias ultimately failed, setting the stage for the even bloodier conflicts to come in the Peloponnesian War.
Through this episode, we’ll examine how this fleeting moment of diplomacy offers a fascinating lens into the political, military, and social dynamics of ancient Greece.
Tune in to uncover the fragile nature of peace in a world constantly at war and the lessons it still holds for us today.

"I wish to compose the history of my times but I am afraid that I will end up like the son of Lixus (=Herodotus) who wrote down everything which was wrong with the Greeks" (Michael Psellus, 10nth century AD, Byzantine empire.) My heart goes out the the Mycenaean Greeks. At some point, near the end of the Bronze Age collapse, all their kings and court officials were dead. All of the scribes were dead. Nobody could read or write. The blue collar Mycenaean Greeks banded together and roamed the seas. Imagine this group. Led by a ragtag bunch of strong men. They end up as Philistines in the Levant and eventually disappear in 400 BC. Some say they all died in captivity in Babylon. It wasn't all grim. The white collar Greeks that stayed behind eventually rebuilt their society and gave us a rich and powerful history.

i would suggest a slight technical adjustment.....rather than offer the video at 360p only, it is better for viewers to have the option of 144p quality because videos without visual components sound just as good at 144p and they only require about 1/3 of the bandwidth which is important for people who buy internet access by the GB

There is a lot more information that further supports this hypothesis: The black Fern trees of Mt Ainos, the location of the animal keep, the Thinia valley, straight line down from Corfu, and more. Since this recording there are numerous more recent updates until 3 weeks ago, and still actively continuing. Looking forward to more progressive posts on this subject.

We will be getting to him, however he is not yet part of the story in our chronological approach. We are currently at the outbreak of the Peloponnesian war, around the same time he was born. He would come to power towards the end of the Peloponnesian War and much of his rule takes place in the decades after the war.

Please consider moving to a sponsor model. There are *way* too many ads on this video. A podcast is designed to be listened to without activity on the part of the listener, but I'm being served up to 2 minutes of ads every 10 minutes of the video, and I don't want to have to stop what I'm doing and click the skip button 5 times in a single podcast. Given your view counts, I can't imagine this is that lucrative for you, so I don't really get the point. I won't be listening to this channel anymore for that reason.

Thanks, glad you are getting something out of the series. Byzantium at this stage wasn't an empire, but a city state. Persian influence would extend into it. Though, there would be periods during the first half of the 5th century that would see this influence somewhat see-saw with Greek actions in the area.
