This is good , but His version on the 1990's 'Deadicated' ìs better.
Nice! It's nice to see folks covering the Dead!❤
Folks??? This is Elis Fucking Costello!!
Does anyone know where to stream this? Can't find on Spotify..this is freakie ahhsome..gotta play this for my bro when I see him this Xmas (yayyy we're all vaxed now.) He's a big time hater of the dead and huge fanboy of elvis costello..altho I won't tell him its a dead Cover tho..😭😭💣💥💣srsly tho would like to add to a Playlist for personal use tis a PITA going in2 youtube.. specially when I am on either Spotify or deadhead archives...neway much luv & lite!
Who would have ever thought the Grateful Dead inspired Elvis to pick up a guitar and start a band. And was good friends with Jerry Garcia
San Jose 1987
saw EC perform this at UCDavis... in 87?
Just listened to this after reading Robert Hunters appraisal of it. I wasn't disappointed. He also mentioned Jane's addiction covering Ripple. It was different, but good, with a nice little treat at the end.
first listen in 2020, and just as fresh as when Elvis or The Dead did them. Timeless songs.
Love this version ....elvis rocks this version
Great song. The Dead were great but Costello nailed this one.
"I'd like to play a Grateful Dead song for you," Costello tells his audience to introduce his live medley of "Ship of Fools" and the love ballad "It Must Have Been the Roses." Some in the crowd laugh, apparently thinking the announcement a joke, before Costello strums through a delicate interweaving of the two tunes...www.mtv.com/news/1123194/eclectic-grateful-dead-covers-disc-features-bob-dylan-patti-smith/
Since there is no one who has posted this here are the lyrics to both songs: Ship of Fools... Went to see the captain, strangest I could find, Laid my proposition down, laid it on the line. I won't slave for beggar's pay, likewise gold and jewels, But I would slave to learn the way to sink your ship of fools. Ship of fools on a cruel sea, ship of fools sail away from me. It was later than I thought when I first believed you, Now I cannot share your laughter, ship of fools. Saw your first ship sink and drown, from rockin' of the boat, And all that could not sink or swim was just left there to float. I won't leave you drifting down, but woh it makes me wild, With thirty years upon my head to have you call me child. Ship of fools on a cruel sea, ship of fools sail away from me. It was later than I thought when I first believed you, Now I cannot share your laughter, ship of fools. The bottles stand as empty, as they were filled before. Time there was and plenty, but from that cup no more. Though I could not caution all, I still might warn a few: Don't lend your hand to raise no flag atop no ship of fools. Ship of fools on a cruel sea, ship of fools sail away from me. It was later than I thought, when I first believed you, Now I cannot share your laughter, ship of fools. It was later than I thought when I first believed you, Now I cannot share your laughter, ship of fools. It Must Have Been the Roses... Annie laid her head down in the roses. She had ribbons, ribbons, ribbons, in her long brown hair. I don't know, maybe it was the roses, All I know I could not leave her there. I don't know, it must have been the roses, The roses or the ribbons in her long brown hair. I don't know, maybe it was the roses, All I know I could not leave her there. Ten years the waves roll the ships home from the sea, Thinkin' well how it may blow in all good company, If I tell another what your own lips told to me, Let me lay 'neath the roses, till my eyes no longer see. I don't know, it must have been the roses, The roses or the ribbons in her long brown hair. I don't know, maybe it was the roses, All I know I could not leave her there. One pane of glass in the window, No one is complaining, no, come in and shut the door, Faded is the crimson from the ribbons that she wore, And it's strange how no one comes round any more. I don't know, it must have been the roses, The roses or the ribbons in her long brown hair. I don't know, maybe it was the roses, All I know I could not leave her there. Annie laid her head down in the roses. She had ribbons, ribbons, ribbons, in her long brown hair. I don't know, maybe it was the roses, All I know I could not leave her there.
Thanks bud
grew up listening to the Dead and introduced to Elvis the summer before college - it doesn't get much better
***** For the record, this was recorded in 2000, just barely 5 years after Jerry had passed. This was a tribute to their 30 year legacy as one of the highest grossing, most beloved American rock bands of all time. These are two of the greatest songs Jerry/Hunter ever wrote. I'm sorry you don't appreciate their music for what it is, but you're missing out on some of the greatest song writing that came from the 60's and continued to add new songs year after year after year, releasing new material without ever dropping their core, yet never staying exactly the same. By the 80's they'd written so many songs of so many different types that their live shows were a complete toss-up as to what they could play and how they would play it. They were constantly innovating their already innovative music that had shifting tones, artistic elements, structures, and lyrical content. From the nonsensical and plain fun to the intensely personal (like It' must have been the roses) they covered everything in between. They were constantly adapting classic folk tunes and the songs of their contemporaries in ways that some would say surpassed the originals. They did this while not stopping touring except for two short stints before their final days in 95 before Jerry passed away trying to redo the mistakes he'd made on the road for 30 years. Very few artists have had as prolific and consistent an output as the Grateful Dead and it's individual albums. Jerry played everything from impressive blues to incredible Bluegrass with varying accompanying artists. Bob, Phil, Mickey, and Bill all went out on their own as well creating extremely successful legacies for the music they'd written for their individual bands and the grateful dead at large. ALL of the living members still tour extensively and constantly add new material and new variations to songs they've now been playing for 50 years. I suggest you give them a better look, you'll find out just how incredible a band they are. Either way, Sorry to revive an argument from 3 years ago.
Yeah, I had this as a filler on a Dead show Way back in 1989. I’m pretty sure it’s the exact same performance.
Whole Lotta Nope right on brotha! Fight the GooD fight!
Oh no. This was on the disc Stolen Roses, a collection of covered by wide variety of artisists. This wast recorded in San Jose in 1987
@@gbiehner4134 Which was officially released on Stolen Roses in August 2000. Look it up. It's easily found information. Look it up seriously.. The album wasn't released until 2000.
I heard this during a set break at the Frost '87 or '88 , '89? Whatever, but many a year before the year 2000.…...it was nice to hear it at a Grateful Dead show as well....
hi coach bobst
Its all a dream we dreamed one afternoon, long ago
Joseph Koenecke should it ever be much more than this?
Awesome tune... awesome version... Long live the Dead just being the Dead!!! Inspired many, and hated by just a couple!!! The Dead will just be the Dead, but being the Dead will never die! Watch yourself, or it will steal your face right off your head!!
@Rexicano I'm no loser thank you. I own a bar, an IT company, a glass company, and a golf course. I hire losers like you to clean our toilets. And the worlds most popular tourning band...The Grateful Dead....yes I enjoy their amazing improv sessions. I knew more about music when I was 15 than you will ever know in your life. Enjoy playing your little shitty Squire and dreaming about how good you'll never be at anything. Keep scrubbing that toilet Juan....its not clean enough for me yet :)
@Rexicano Wow you obviously have no taste in music. I'd like to hear your version of anything. I'm sure you can't even play guitar. Talentless fool
much much thanks!
Were you up in the sky-loft?
Thanks a Bunch for posting! Elvis is King! (=
love it - thanks!!!
