    Thanks Conor. I thought you came up with some interesting talking points. I loved the book. Rooney's hard to beat when it comes to the intricacies of human relations, and not just the romantic. You didnt touch on the Ulysses parallels, the stream of consciousness and the Dublin peregrenations. More importantly, I think, is the sense of Bloom/Peter as outsiders. Oh, and their father is Slovak, not Polish. My Slovak relatives would be outraged!😊

Who was also of the same race btw, I can only imagine how mad the rest of the frankfurters were to find out he didn’t have the self respect to at least sleep with some trans queer black radicals on the side or something.

    People have been forming relationships in capitalist and patriarchal societies for as long as those societies have existed. I personally think the modern problems with dating are more complex than what either critical theorists (it’s capitalism and/or patriarchy) or redpillers (it’s female privilege / wokeism) say. It’s a new monster that, I think, has something to do with the transitionary nature of our society. Gender equality is far greater today than it was in the past, but we do not yet have a perfectly equal society, and the competing interests and beliefs of the sexes are difficult to balance in these kaleidoscopic times. But the intrusion of technology and capitalism into sexual selection is undeniably ONE of the core problems here

    • @redherringoffshoot2341
      @redherringoffshoot2341 หลายเดือนก่อน

      true, but I wouldn’t rely on dating apps for finding “the one” but rather for booking up or even finding new friends in the case of apps such as “Bumble”, if you want to find love then you gotta do it manually by joining local groups based around hobbies/interests you have and then forming connections through there

    • @Botnet777
      @Botnet777 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Clinical psychologist Sam Vaknin would argue that it's a society that has been hijacked mentally and spiritually by pathological narcissism. That is what we have on full display here when we discuss technology and society/identity. People are looking at many of the symptoms and calling them causes like capitalism or the economic system. What one believes is the beginning and end of how they operate in the world. We live in a totally unnatural and imitation world, our sciences are proving to be worthless and in many ways fake. People need to cling to a sense of meaning or belonging. Peoples belief systems get influenced and hijacked by other mentally ill or mentally abusive people online or in the real dating landscape. People who live must contend with the idea that their life has no meaning, in a fantastically fake world, that still traumatizes you day in and day out. People use their identity and their fake money tool in order to punish and "fight" the competing forces that they perceive to be in competition with. People can use any instrument to cause abuse, and propaganda comes in all flavors. Biologically we are still rooted in our older regions of our brains, and we are all simply using these means to disconnect with one another, and indulge in our narcissism that leads us to believe that we are omnipotent and need the most and best of everything the world has to offer without risking anything personally. We are not loving one another because we choose so many self destructive behaviors and connect with people based on a materialistic shared fantasy. People don't want to be average in the global world, we were never given the chance to choose to be ourselves, we internalized a message down the line that if we don't dominate over everyone then we aren't safe.

      Wow really well said! Yeah I mean I think as boomer as it sounds, it really does come down to to technology. Everyone is simultaneously connected yet isolated. You match with someone on an app and it feels so abstract, it’s hard to internalize “okay this is a real person I can make a connection with”.

    • @earhearthush-up5549
      @earhearthush-up5549 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@redherringoffshoot2341 I’m actually gonna call BS on this one: if you’re a single man and you start joining local hobby groups for the purpose of meeting someone romantically, it’s not gonna go that well. For one these groups tend to trend older, like 30+, so if you’re younger it’s a no go. Secondly the gender ratio is *usually* not skewed in your favor, and many of the women will be in relationships. You honestly have a better chance meeting people irl through parties, bars, clubs, raves etc. There’s a manosphere folk wisdom that declares the women that indulge in that aren’t ‘relationship’ material, and that’s frankly dumb. Just because someone likes to drink and dance a little doesn’t mean they only want casual flings, or even that they want those at all. And frankly even a casual fling can result in a serious, loving relationship. I say, take the ‘party-pill’, and live it up.

    Sexual selection boils down to the sexy son hypothesis, good genes and Fisher’s principle when sex ratio nears 1:1. Members of a sex compete intrasexually with men competing over access to scarce resources and social status, while intersexually using 4 strategies of self-promotion, competitor derogation, mate manipulation and competitor manipulation. To make it as short as possible, the top 3 traits hard data shows women select for in short term and long term mating.. Short term: 1. Physical attractiveness 2. Dominance and confidence 3. Sexual experience Long-term: 1. Emotional stability 2. Ambition and access to financial resources 3. Compatibility of values

      Yes, but there’s a few other inescapable principles. Eg, handicap principle where Individuals of a species display costly, hard-to-fake traits as signals of fitness. By purchasing and showcasing luxury items, individuals signal that they possess surplus resources, which implies genetic strength and high social status. These goods are expensive and often non-essential, making them a reliable indicator that the individual can afford to waste resources, thus demonstrating their ability to thrive despite such costs. This display not only attracts potential mates by showcasing resource-holding power but also wards off competitors, reinforcing dominance in social and mating hierarchies. Sexual selection doesn’t only come down to 3 principles
