PORTRAIT IN BLACK MUSIC 1960
Since a CD of the soundtrack was never released I decided to take musical moments from the film and add some visuals…and I’ve created this video so that so we could at least hear part of that hauntingly beautiful musical score when not being able to view the entire film! I hope you enjoy!

    Thank you for the presentation of ads covering the entire period that CBS Playhouse 90 was on the air. While I don't remember the program, except for some reruns on kinescope or early video tape, this show was, apparently, a first rate production, utilizing Hollywood actors at their best on live television. Just wish TV had this much class today.

    I was fortunate enough to be at this event. It was a cold rainy evening and I went with my ex who besides Rob Bowman was with Elaine most of the time being her hairdresser, confidant, And the one who got Chiemi Karasawa to direct Elaine's documentary. And I could not believe that I was in the same room with all of those talented people who I had admired so long it was a great night. And Elaine used to always give out Bays English muffins to everyone for Christmas and they are the best and to this day I only eat Bays English muffins. What a great night that was. And I am lucky for getting to know Elaine and how wonderful a person she actually was under that tough exterior. The first 5yrs that I knew her she used to say lots of nasty stuff to me and then after she knew I meant no harm to her she started to warm up to me and would sometimes even compliment me. I miss seeing her and her big personality. And she was one very talented entertainer.

      She tried to get the first London production after completing the London production of COMPANY. But her perceived lack of name recognition (and likely Arthur Laurents) prevented it. And so Angela Lansbury got to do it and the first Broadway revival.

    Was looking forward to seeing thin on BW but after Bette Midler's liberal stance, I'll live without seeing. I'll be missing NOTHING as I SAW THE DEFINITIVE DOLLY; CAROL CHANNING. Truly baffled.... What makes these "celebrities" feel their political opinions supersede any other person's??? When you announce how much you support liberal agendas, you are essentially impugning half the country's judgment. As an entertainer who depends on ticket purchasers for your livelihood and success, can you afford to "turn people off"??? Voice your ideology and dogma at your own career peril. Bette Middle opposite David Hyde Pierce is not musical comedy; it's SCIENCE FICTION

      Carol Channing was a mixed-race performer who was singularly proud of her inclusion on Nixon's enemies list. We all look forward to the next show you'll see on Liberal Broadway, the Mamet translation of Ibsen's The wild Duck, starring Kevin Sorbo, Adam Sandler and Patricia Heaton. Until then, please fuck all the way off.

    I am a long time fan of Elaine's, and was very fortunate to attend this event in person. With all due respect to Hal Prince, I would like to comment on one of his anecdotes about Elaine. Maybe he has forgotten this -- but I'd like to share the real reason that Elaine was dressed well and in full make-up when she returned to finish recording "Ladies Who Lunch" in the Pennebaker's documentary. The first attempt was very late on a Sunday night, in fact it was well after midnight. The second attempt was not recorded the next morning as he states in his remarks (which would have been a Monday) - but was on Wednesday morning, which is a matinee day. Elaine had her hair and makeup done in the documentary because she had a two o'clock performance that day, and needed to go directly from the recording studio to the theater. To clarify another comment that Mr. Prince makes, he says that,"...when Elaine married for the first time...." which gives the impression that Elaine married more than once. She did not - John Bay was Elaine's first and only husband.

    • @brianeduardo1234
      @brianeduardo1234 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Ken L Yes I wondered about that... I thought she was only married once as you say... and in her one woman show she says that it was great but there was no repeat performance. Elaine was one of a kind... just fantastic... I suspect not always easy... but some talent

    I was 8-12 years old when this great series was on...and I still remember some of them. "Alas, Babylon," about the end of the world, was especially powerful. I also recall being emotionally moved by "The Browning Version," though I didn't know who the fine actor was in the lead -John Gielgud! PLAYHOUSE 90 instilled a love for theater and literature that I carry to this day. How incredibly sad that nothing of this magnificence is available today. There are only a few miscellaneous episodes out on the internet, but surely some way could be found to issue a multi-dvd box of shows, as they did with Studio one.

      Lights Out! was another great show. So many now are forgotten, all of them classy and great. As a little kid during this era the music was wonderful and life was so perfect...This lovely song is a great background for the beautiful life of the 1950s, gentle, safe and with the wonderful and fun parents I had, pretty perfect. A world gone away and much missed. I wish everyone could have been there when this world was so right.

    • @serenahm

      @@bethvirginiaphillips4583 But for a great many people in the U.S., life was anything but beautiful, peaceful and perfect. For Black people and other people of color, including Native people, the 1950s were a painful time of discrimination, violence and hatred. I’m sure you realize how very lucky you were to have grown up in better circumstances, and that you do all you can to help those less fortunate.

    • @bethvirginiaphillips4583
      @bethvirginiaphillips4583 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@serenahm Don't forget white people also had their share of hurt and discrimination. No one goes unscathed in this world. In that era of glory when this show was popular, people looked forward and not backward and real progress was made with race relations. Remember it has only been since Obama that the racial pot has been stirred, to separate people and not unite us! The agenda is a big one..it has to do with open borders, causing chaos and separating man and woman, black and white, old and young and so forth. If we are busy hating each other we can't pay attention to what the leaders of the country and world are doing to us. It's a very big subject. We got along when I was growing up with black and white neighbors. We had respect for each other. If we keep hanging on to the past we will Never have a future. Every person, if you go back far enough, had slavery in its past, all the way to ancient Egypt. No one talks about it. Race baiting and racial politics score big points to the race hucksters making a dime off of it. Remember, there was a time not long ago where REAL progress was made, and my generation started really appreciating blacks for their musical accomplishments in the sixties when Motown came to the fore. Young kids like myself thought black people were the coolest on the face of the earth, then politics came along and destroyed everything. Every person is equal to the other...we must be self sufficient and stop blaming our lack on the past. The future is for all of us, black, white, polka dot and orange. Let's go forward together. As Rodney King said, "Can't we all just get along?"

    From the moment the familiar announcement "Live- from Television City in Hollywood!!" is heard, you knew a major event was starting. And the stunning Alex North theme playing amongst the star animation made your adrenaline race even faster. I've only seen 2 or 3 of the entire body of Playhouse 90s- some of which were re-aired on PBS back in the 80's, and then only a crude kinescope version was released. But this was a remarkable series technically- live every three weeks, then 4th week, a filmed movie shown to give the studio a break and occasionally go on location. It was the only anthology to broadcast in all 3 media: live, film, and starting in 1958, videotape. The videotapes have never been re-aired, and they are the best example of what the true live, play looks like- especially since the show was never done in color- save one Christmas performance of "The Nutcracker" in 1958 (does a recording of this exist?). The series was already gone before I was born, and unfortunately the whole anthology format- championed by CBS theater exec Hubbell Robinson- ended with this series in 1960. (Another live play would not air on CBS until "Fail Safe" 40 years later in 2000.) So now, you can only see snippets of its former greatness, when they celebrate the network itself like they did in 2002 and showed moments of "The Old Man," "Judgment at Nuremberg," and "Days of Wine and Roses." I always wondered if a separate network could be developed to air all these play anthologies- this one, as well as "Studio One," "Climax!, and Kraft Television Theatre," among others.
