How to Make RC Silicone Tires with 3D Printed Molds
มุมมอง 12Kปีที่แล้ว
Hi guys! Here is my new video where I explain how to make RC silicone tires with 3D printed molds. These tires will be used on my next car that will be released on the channel soon. To make the tires you will need silicone and cornstarch, the mixture of the two ingredients makes the silicone more resistant, more durable and makes the tire easier to produce. I hope this video helped you. Here be...

    How do you do it if you can't fill your mold like that? And mine doesn't have any holes drilled in it to pour anything in. I can Def pack the top and bottom like that but I'll never know if I have enough inside plus making the 2 halves 1

    • @3dimensions478
      @3dimensions478 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      As the silicone with the cornstarch is very thick, the best solution I found was to spread it like this, I couldn't just pour it in, so I made the mold with that in mind.

  • @slakjawnotsayin5451
    @slakjawnotsayin5451 13 วันที่ผ่านมา

    This is what I was going to try, but also add a softener to it, which I can't remember what I used to use for making silicon and cornstarch molds a few years back... Maybe it was mineral spirits or mineral oil or something?? Just adding a little drop of whatever it was, would be enough to soften it and make it a nicer rubber. Hopefully I made notes for when I figured out the best combo back then, and if I can find such notes somewhere, I'll come back and comment on it. Or after I mess around with this stuff again soon and figure it out again. I need to make slot car tires, cuz my originals on my 32 scale cars are all hardened and toast... So I need something cheap and grippy, and would also be cool to blow a tire here and there having to change them in the pit. LOL Actually, I used to use the clear silicone and add a color to it with cheap acrylic paints from Walmart, so maybe I will just try using the black silicone without the softener whatever it was, and see how they work out first. Thank you for this video man!!!

      Thank you very much for your comment, after several attempts this was the best solution I found, I tried using some materials to soften the final rubber but I never had good results, and as I was going to use it on tarmac it was good that it was harder and more resistant. If you find out what the material is, I'd love to know. Thanks!

    Well done! A few thoughts, instead of vaseline use spray on mold release to preserve the tread details. And when gluing the tires to the rims, apply the glue to surface of the that the tire sits on rather than the edges. Overall though you did a great job, and the mold is very cleverly designed.

      Thank you! I have never used foam tires so I can't compare, compared to rubber tires the silicone tires have more grip. The biggest disadvantage is the lifespan, they last less time, especially on very rough surfaces, however I have tested on concrete and asphalt and they didn't show significant wear.

    You didn't put a differential in this one.. Do you miss that feature?.. Or since it is off-road you don't notice.. as the ground is loose anyway?? The A2212 is a good choice.. hard to find a real cheap ESC with reverse, but the 30A drone ESCs are cheap.

    • @3dimensions478
      @3dimensions478 ปีที่แล้ว

      I didn't put a differential in this car because as it is off rod it would sometimes cause it to lose traction in one wheel and that wheel would be spinning non-stop without moving the car. And with a differential lock it is more fun to drive on loose ground. The A2212 is my favorite motor for small cars, cheap, powerful and reliable. I found an ESC with reverse for just over 20€ and the programming possibilities and braking make it a good buy.

    Nice design. Many parts remind me of the Tarmo4. Is this design based on it? How are the TPU shocks holding up? Do you keep the car elevated when not used as to avoid them getting deformed and loosing their functionality? Thanks!

    • @3dimensions478
      @3dimensions478 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! Yes, the differential bases are inspired by the Tarmo4, I really liked the way it's possible to remove the differential without disassembling the whole front axle so I decided to make my version. And yes the TPU shocks hold up well, when I'm not using the car I leave it with the wheels up, more properly I support the chassis on a roll of tape to prevent deformation in the shocks.

    Really good video and amazing vehicle! I'm going to design my own rc car soon, do you have some tips for me? I want to use a 3D printed belt drive, to dampen the torque a bit. I will be targeting a smaller scale, like 1:14 or so.

    • @3dimensions478
      @3dimensions478 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you very much! The tip I have is for you to watch a lot of videos of other projects and also some "real" rc cars to have a good base and an idea of the kind of car you want to build. It is very important at the beginning of the project to already have an idea of what you want to do so that everything works together properly. Some weeks ago I tried to make a rc bike but I didn't have the expected results so I didn't release the video, but one of the parts that surprised me was the transmission, I used two belt pulleys in PLA and one belt in TPU and it worked very well, in the future I will try to make a car powered by a 3D printed belt.

When you had a good experience with TPU I'm not that afraid trying it ^^
