1962 is the year I joined the Navy and my first duty station was just up the channel from San Francisco at the mothball fleet in Stockton CA. I was stationed on Treasure Island San Francisco in 1966-67, and again in 1969-73. San Francisco was a cool city back then, not so today.

Having visited AC for the first time earlier this year while visiting family in the US, I can't imagine what a stunning city it would be today had these buildings survived.

Ah, the Eisenhower Special, yes, those were the days, campaigning by train! How I long for their return! The brief tarmac-touchdowns, zoom-call feeds, satellite hookups, & campaigning-by-cellphone transmissions of today just don't cut it. There's something so cool & magical about those whistlestop campaigns of old, back in an America that no longer exists. By the way, I've always liked Ike's campaign slogan of that presidential year---"Look Ahead, Neighbor!" To me, it implies a sense of optimism & prosperity, that things were going to get even better. Sadly, these qualities have vanished from the presidential campaigns of today, as they can't be promised or counted-on at all. Today's cynical electorate of low-to-non-existent expectations simply couldn't take them seriously. I know it sounds silly, but I like to think, in the deep recesses of my wildest political fantasies, that the Eisenhower Special still is out there somewhere, even if only in ghostly fashion, with Ike & Mamie aboard, whistlestopping across the land, casting a warmly affectionate yet cautious eye on us, making sure we keep the nation they served so well---on the rails!

apartments were dirt cheap when I was a kid. even to then's income. the dollar of 1970 was about 7-8 dollars todays money. but an apartment back then was maybe 80-120 for a studio which is like less than 1000 in todays money. and I mean a studio with a kitchenette and bathroom/shower. not a room you share a bathroom down the hall. that same studio apartment is 3200 or more . no one can live anymore in this former "Paradise" which it never really was. it was dirty back then but not as violent. it had its problems in the 70s. Z-Channel, Zodiac, Cults left and right, Robberies but not smash and grabs and robberies where people get shot anyways even if they give up their belongings. people were more sociable back then too.

The amount of Old World Buildings in AC is mind blowing...the crap they build today is worthless compared to these works of art!

What a time to celebrate! The war was almost over. The Great Depression was history. The post-war baby boom and prosperity were just around the corner. Happy days were indeed here again.

Atlantic City officially fell into decline after WW2 due to an overall change in tourism. Affordable air travel to other destinations is only one reason why the city lost its allure. White wealth and privilege doesn't last forever and now in 2024, the city has about half of the population it used to have with a 3x to 4x the federal poverty rate and a majority third world population. Casinos are considered to be a so called "shadow government" with the politicians in the pockets of the casinos and plenty vacant lots due to land speculators.

The shark warning sign at Baker Beach must have been put up after the fatal great white shark attack there in 1959. An 18yr old college student was attacked and died from his injuries. RIP

The lobby area of the Marlborough Blenheim adorned with sofa was the highlight of a trip to Atlantic City after EXPO 67.

My family watched the lunar landing on The Dennis Hotel's lobby.

I bet AC looks and feels like this today as well!

I'm thinking that most of this video was filmed between Boardwalk Hall and Clarige. Lots of views of the Bally's Dennis Tower.

Not going to lie, it's kind of sad seeing the size of some of those trees they're hauling. Can't help but think how big they would be now if they were still growing. Interesting footage none the less.

I. wonder if these older trucks had water tanks Located behind the cab of the truck used too cool down the brakes going downhill in steep grades and. mountains too avoid the brakes over heating when they are applied and if they had. 3 stage Jake. brakes ( engine brakes ) switch on the dashboard of the truck / have a good day. very good. Noticed a couple of things about this. It seems to be shot on two different days. If you notice at both 1:44 and 6:49, the marquee for the Warner Theater has two different movies. The first one, "The Impatient Years" was released Sept 1944. Also showing is evidence of damage from the hurricane of the same month. Later on, the marquee showed "Bring on the Girls" which was from March 1945, which would confirm it was from Easter of 1945, along with the Steel Pier marquee.
