Welcome to another adventure in landscape photography! Today, we're at the serene and windswept Melmerby Beach, Nova Scotia, facing a challenge many of us have encountered: a dull, overcast day with seemingly lifeless light. It's the kind of weather that tempts you to stay cozy indoors, but these conditions can surprise you. While a gray sky and flat lighting might not scream "perfect photograp...
The Best Lenses for Landscape Photography
มุมมอง 534หลายเดือนก่อน
It took me some time to realize this, but lens choice doesn't affect perspective. This might sound surprising since it's commonly believed that a long lens creates that compressed, foreshortened look, while wide-angle lenses exaggerate space. You've probably heard that using a wide-angle lens for portraits makes the subject's nose appear larger than their ears. In reality, that's not true. The ...

Dive into the world of nature photography on a moody, cloudy day in breathtaking Newfoundland and Labrador! LED light panels can transform an otherwise dreary, overcast scene into something spectacular. Renowned for its rugged and stunning landscapes, Newfoundland also boasts unpredictable weather. If you're waiting for the ultimate sunny day, you might be waiting forever! No matter the weather...
Really enjoying your videos, the reality of the cold windy shore comes through as you capture those images.
@@acrummey85 thanks a lot, Ira! Yeah, not a fan of the cold. Brrrr!
Great images. Is Spain a relocation or vacation?
@@Coloradohiker658 thanks! I guess a temporary relocation. I spend the winter there each year.
Please comment below and share your thoughts and advice for others to get out and enjoy the landscape photography experience!
Beautiful Images on Day1 as are all your Images, where is home for you and what is the trip to Spain for, apart from Photography, best wishes, Colin.
Thank you Colin. My home is in Newfoundland and I travel to Spain each winter. As you may have heard me say, I'm not a fan of the cold!
Thanks for taking me along. Great images.Been there a few times, it is one of my top 5 favourite places in Canada.
@@denisroy81 you’re welcome, Dennis! Thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment. Very much appreciated.
Your content is amazing, and I can see a lot of potential for growth on your channel! I believe with an optimized thumbnail, your videos could get even more attention. As a professional thumbnail designer, I’d be happy to create a custom thumbnail sample for you. If you’re interested, let me know, and we can discuss how to enhance your channel’s visuals and attract more viewers.
Thank you for your comment. I'm not ready yet for a custom thumbnail designer. Maybe sometime in the future.
Greetings from about 140 km South of you! I've been out on some grey days to the beaches as well and enjoying converting some beautiful, yet photographically unremarkable scenes into some cool images. I've been leaning into some creative editing to achieve finished images that suit my style. There's definitely some challenge involved!
@@TheOlandex yes there’s definitely some post work involved to turn these gray days into something more interesting. In some ways, it allows you to see the other image making opportunities without the distraction of the beautiful colours of summer.
Really nice bw grasses
Thanks. Some days it's tough to find images. I'm hoping for some better days to come!
@MabelFraser-v2f I hear you, especially in winter her in Ontario.
Thanks, nice relaxing video, nice images, lovely location. Yes K&F filters are great.
Thanks Stephen. I also use K&F tripods and backpacks. Great quality at a reasonable price.
Just starting to watch your channel. Just a suggestion, music kind of loud at the start. A lot of channels do this, not sure why. It is jarring, unpleasant. Thanks
Hey thanks! Yeah, as a new TH-camr, I'm still figuring it all out. Thanks for your comment!
Beautiful even on a grey day...well done.
Thanks Tom!
Your lousy day photos are still better than what most people make on their best day. Learned a bit watching it.
@@jng72769 thanks! I’ll keep trying!
Haha... the curse of the landscape photographer - bad weather. I know it soooo well. And yet we plod on, hoping for better every time we go out. Cool video. Subscribed. You have a good eye for composition - please share your thoughts while composing.
Thanks Eugene! I take all comments to heart. I will talk more about my thoughts on composition in future videos.
This takes me back to being in school I can almost smell the rubber cement
Haha! Me too Kevin! Funny memory. All the best Buddy!
Well I went through the whole video and really didn’t hear anything remotely close to a tip shared by a pro. I hate to complain, especially since I liked the actual content, but this click bait title trend had to stop.
I totally agree! As an early TH-camr I got caught up in the VidIQ recommendations for titles. Thanks for your feedback!
Also, I guess the tip was to come prepared to shoot even if it's just a scouting session.
😂
Thanks!
Happy Holidays!!

Great video, as always… love the beautiful landscapes of Newfoundland, thanks!
Thanks very much!
Nice video. Cheers from Norway
Thanks Stig! You live in a beautiful part of the world as well!
Just found your channel David and enjoying your Videos very much, tell me after a very successful professional career in Photography and you must have used many different makes of cameras and with all the different makes out there what brought you to settling for a Fuji XH2 Its curiosity on my part in asking this question as it's always nice to get a professional eye on the subject.best wishes, Colin.
Hey Colin, Thanks very much for your kind words. Yes, in my career I have used many different camera brands, from Nikon to Hasselblad to Sinar. The Fuji X-H2 was my choice for landscape for several reasons. I like a cropped sensor because I was not concerned about low light capabilities (less sensor noise) or (perceived) shallow depth of field. I like the increased lens 'reach' due to the cropped sensor and smallness and lightness of the gear while hiking in a landscape. Also, I have always had a soft-spot for Fuji because of their positive response to what professionals needed in a film stock back in the 1990's. Good luck and have fun out there!
Amazing work! Looking forward to more videos like this as I am starting my journey in landscape photography 🙌🏾🔥
Thank you! I am so envious of you because I know how much fun you will have learning new skills and having amazing experiences! Good luck out there!
@ thank you 😊 and have a good Christmas 🎄
Really enjoying these! I’d recently picked up an older xh-1 and these are inspiring, thank you!
That's great Jonathan and thank you! I think the X-H1's and 2's are the perfect landscape photography camera. Good luck out there shooting!
Nice video
Thanks Stig!
Excellent video. I enjoyed it.
@@jimhamilton8775 thanks Jim!

@@DaveMabelFraser I look forward to it Mabel.
That worked out great 👍
Thanks!
Hi, such a nice video. I just got a Canon 600d that is used with a kit lens for 125 bucks. What lens do you recommend (other than a kit lens) as I begin my journey for landscape photography? Thanks.
Thanks so much! I would recommend a short (ish) zoom. Something close to a 24-50mm (full frame equivalent). I shoot with a aps-c format and shoot with a 13mm prime and a 56mm prime. I also have a 50-230mm zoom I sometimes use more detailed captures. The short zoom will give you more bang for your buck!
@MabelFraser-v2f is 10-18 appropriate? I also shoot apsc
@@sumangoswami2620 oh yes! That would be a 15 - 27mm (at a 1.5 factor) full-frame equivalent. Great choice! Maybe 1.6 factor for Canon?
@@sumangoswami2620 Maybe you already have something longer. A 35mm perhaps?
@MabelFraser-v2f I have the kit lens 18-55 only.
Don’t know if you’ve already done it, but please shoot the Duncan’s Cove to Ketch Harbour trail!! Great vids and great guidance. Keep them coming!!
Thanks a lot! That trail looks awesome! I will add that to my list when I'm back in Nova Scotia.
I enjoyed watching this. Leveling the camera is one of my struggles, i find myself using the transform tool in post alot. Indeed doing it in camera is always best.
Hey thanks! Yes me too. If I'm not careful, I'll have a lot of post-horizon levelling to do! Thankfully, the newer cameras has an electronic level...although I find it's not 100% accurate. Thanks again for the comment!
hahahahaha and yes was lol...what a great finish at the very end of this reel. I miss Newfoundland so much and I only discovered it 3 years ago. Such a photographers paradise. Where to next?...how about Cape St Mary's someday soon.
Hey thanks! Cape St. Mary's sounds good to me! Next week I am in Petty Harbour. Thanks for your comment!
Please add a comment! Where should I head to next?
Where/What should I shoot next? Let me know in the comment section below!
Excellent - really enjoying your videos. How do you like the Viltrox?
Oh thank you Tony! The Viltrox is a pretty good lens for the price. Actually, it's a pretty good lens period. I like using it but wish it was weather/Newfoundland-sealed.
Fantastic! Well done! Do you live in NFLD now?
Thanks Ully! I'm in the learning and (hopefully) improving stage. Yes, living in Newfoundland for 4-5 months of the year then Spain and PEI.
@ well you’re doing a great job! How long have you been doing it? This is the first one I saw. I’ve been thinking of doing that myself, but I think it’s a huge commitment.
Thanks again Ully. This is just my third video. Learning more and more with each one. Pretty steep learning curve but a ton of fun.
