AikiBudo/AikiBujitsu. Quite good, isn't it. You're not wrong to say aikijujutsu. It's a technicality regarding the description of the art. Mr Obata was trained in Yoshinkai Aikido which was derived by Shioda Gozo sensei during the AikiBudo period 1930's. Before 1920's it was Daito Ryu Jujutsu, later Daito Ryu AikiBujutsu and Ueshiba ' AikiBujutsu. Much later Daito Ryu formerly adopted Daito Ryu Aiki Jujutsu.

In self defense situations atemi is a tremendous advantage. It doesn’t necessarily require hard contact, just that you are able to sell it as imminent painful contact. Kuzushi - attacking balance - works much better when credible atemi threats are applied with good distance and timing, along with credible energy. I’ve done a lot of aikido and a little judo. And I ve been in a few self defense situations. Believe me, no matter how quick you are, there is no room to maintain stylistic purity. The thing that will help me the most regardless of style, is what I have instinctively gone to. I’m not claiming to be an expert on street fights and attacks. But it’s not all theoretical either. It is why I studied aiki jitsu use of atemi. You may not ever need atemi but if you do, you’d better be able to bring it. -Matt’s dad
