If our memories are not stored in the brain, why are AI systems that are modelled on the brain able to learn new skills by manipulating information stored in the computer memory (like the weights associated with connections between artificial neurons)? It would be strange to claim that LLM's don't store any information but they just are receivers for cultural morphic resonance fields. It seems more plausible to argue that the brain does actually store memories in the patterns of connectivity that are shaped by past patterns of activation. Quantum physics does seem to refute materialism to some degree, as it would be hard to account for things like superposition or entanglement in materialist or physicalist terms, but it also opens up the potential for magical thinking. Like saying nice things to the wall occasionally will make it more likely that the wall will not fall on top of you in case of an earthquake. Similar to claims that water has memory and if you say kind words to the water, it will make plants grow better.

such a talented and beautiful person, Laurie Anderson. But hard to believe that she is going into this Ukraine and Covid thing like any other cretin. Her consciousness is much lower than I thought. During the Covid circus I thought “why don’t we hear anything from Laurie Andersond, some words of wisdom?”, and then I thought “oh, she is smart, stays in the background, doesn’t speak about it.” or something like that.

The title suggests she first examined all the traditions, then made her own. Like she would be on a level where she could oversee the entire buddhist world, measure people like Ajahn Chah and grading his type of buddhism. NO person has this capacity, IF they claim so, it is known in the buddhist world as IGNORANCE

In "Theravada" Buddhism in Sri Lanka, all enlightened "Baghavath Buddhas" appear on earth , after eons of life times of purification of the mind, as a fulfilling universal qualification to perfecting qualities of "conscious energies" described in Sri Lankan Buddhist pali canon / texts "marghadi " Buddhas' spoken sound language written Pali Tripitaka" as "paramitha kamma" (perfectible universal deeds). The Baghvath Buddha has described sentience beings existing in 31 realms. All creations in this universe are "energies" with influence of the six ( 6 ) aggregates "elements" 1. sound (ears ), 2. taste ( tongue ), 3, smell (nose ) 4. seeing (eyes ). 5. touch (Body ), 6, feelings(heart ), under "causality" cause & effect . The Buddha has described how universal energy called "kamma" manifests in human form through human faculties of seeing, hearing, smelling, taste, touch & mind (past experiences) called " SANKARA " energy, in Pali canon, through Human 6 aggregates, amalgamating with external world experiences of feelings through the Human "Heart Organ " as electrical waves signals to develop a "seed" to become "conscious energy", which continues to the brain as a "thought" and this continuation of experience is stored in the "subconscious" mind in the human brain called "mano" (pali ) (mind) in Buddhism. This" perception " action is called "thought". Thought becomes a conscious energy, called "kamma/karma = consciousness + phenomenon in Buddhism.Theravada Buddhism in sri Lanka thripitaka

When i first started taking Buddhism very seriously, it actually destroyed my creativity for a very long time. I simply didn’t care about picking up a brush. For about two years, I did nothing. Then, all of a sudden, it came back renewed, refreshed, and very, very different. It’s been an experience.

There is a terrible myth that has overtaken the world, it's a myth that violence will lead to peace. We create our present and future based on the stories we tell ourselves about our past. Sadly, the story of war and conflict we call history is setting us to have a violent future. We need stories and metaphors of peace if we want a more peaceful future. 😇

Great discussion. The Geshe’s voice sometimes came through a bit unclear but still understandable. This is a valuable discussion. I found myself thinking of the Australian aborigines Dreamtime as quite comparable, and the book by the late Robert Lawlor, Voices of the First Day. Lawlor was a founder of Aurorville in India and a translator of the work of Schwaller de Lubicz, great Egyptologist. He lived with the aborigines for quite a span as well and was accomplished in his understanding and transmission of sacred geometry.

The reason Buddha-Dharma (Buddhism) is getting so diluted in the Western world, especially in America is because very smart, well-spoken scholars like Stephen pick and choose Buddha's teaching to fit their own opinions and their way of life. Buddha's statement of "life is dukkha" is about how the cycle of birth and death itself is suffering. That's why it's included and explained in the law of 12 dependent origination. His ultimate teaching was about cessation of suffering, which means Nirvana- liberation from samsara. In Theravada and Mahayana Buddhist sutras recounts over and over how Buddha refers to liberation from the cycle of birth and death. This is why Right View/Understanding/Perception is the 1st of the 8 noble paths. It does require faith based on trust and confidence in Buddha's teachings. To have the Right View, one must deeply understand the profound meaning of Karma (dependent origination) and see that we're going through reincarnation moment-to-moment as we constantly change into different formations (based on the karma of the past and karmic actions of the present). Only if people can understand the Karma then one can see why Buddha stressed so much on liberation from the samsaric cycle of birth and death. We must go beyond intellectualizing the Dharma only and really go deep into our minds to see the true nature of our mind. That's why we should be meditating. To cultivate/discipline the mind so we can let go of afflictions, penetrate through the illusory ego, and see the nature of the mind directly. That's the only way to truly realize the absolute nature of the mind, which is only awareness. Nothing to identify with but which is the source of infinite possibilities. Just as the empty space is neither is nor isn't but provides the space for all that is. May you all be liberated from samsara and enjoy the eternal peace and joy. _()_

When speaking of death and being in a place to be able to witness a loved one die in such a way that defies the norm. . . I witnessed my Sister in law pass away in a manner that was so not as I expected. Not once did she say "why me?" she never complained, even when things got very dire. I came away from the experience fundamentally changed! How could I go back to making things out to be so difficult/painful/negative. It forces you to really live in the moment and stop complaining, being disrespectful to those we don't understand etc. I just wish I was able to be more receptive to the joyful aspect as she mentioned concerning Lou's passing. I was a mess in the moment, it was only in retrospect that I was able to glean the positive!

I love Laurie Anderson. I love everything that she said. Just hardcore disagree about Zelensky. He did nothing to prevent a war. He is jetsetting around the world getting awards, while the Ukraine is being destroyed. Who is he helping? Not the Ukrainian. "I am needed," as he says it, is packed with ego. It's more about him than others. It's not about serving. As a recovering rescuer, I recognise that need to be needed. It was about "me" thrusting myself upon others "to help" them so that I could feel needed. That's based in insecurity.
