Hello
This is strikingly similar to how I developed my grade 1 spondylolisthesis 3 decades ago (referring to the arching back primarily), I highly recommend learning to do everything athletic while bracing the core. Another thing I recognize from my own faults after getting back into throwing this past year is the hipshift and ending up "too elevated" at the front basically "overshooting" the brace we would like to get from our left leg and certainly in my own case the main culprit is my desire to "push" with the right leg without the patience to work down in the split position until everything comes around. I think the best thrower to look at when it comes to patience in the middle is Mykolas.
Great tips for all throwers.

I wonder how much of that right leg activity in the middle is related to differences of driving out of the back? Denny is more rotational out of the back. He drives off the left leg later which make his left leg trail his right leg more in the middle. Alekna drives sooner off the left leg out of the back and seems to generate more linear force which may be why that right knee in the middle is driving forward more.
Thanks. Hope it helps. If I understand correctly you're 19 and have thrown the 2k discus 187 '?

@@Throws_Coach_Nels hi, we did a session this morning working on a few of those things. Am I wrong or is the first guy left extends early on his release
It does look a little early to me too.
He does so many things that are conventionally considered "wrong" and yet he holds the WR. Makes me wonder if he's wrong or if we as coaches are wrong.
I like having the throwers try these different techniques and see which one works for them.
Nice

@@Throws_Coach_Nels thank you. Do you have any advice what I should be working on? My focus has been trying to get my left foot down quicker at the front
@@joethrows9427 Wait so those are your videos on your TH-cam Channel? Your technique is excellent! You're hitting all the positions really well. Try and post some with the camera at 9:00 looking at 3:00. One thing I saw is try to fully extend your left block leg at the finish.
@@Throws_Coach_Nelsyes that is me and thank you for answering me. I will work on that with my left leg, I think that has been a problem since I started doing reverse back in April or May. I will get my mum to help me with camera that you said to do and post it on my channel. Thank you so much
I noticed the same thing as soon as I saw her throwing at the trials. I'm not clear on why they ever decided to aggressively throw the left around. This seems to stabilize her orbit and lengthening towards the right side of the sector also allowing her to have someone better body position as you noted. I didn't realize they had mentioned it in any interviews. The only thing that scares me is the old I'm throwing for let's fix my technique idea other throwers have suffered from that in the past
th-cam.com/users/livej2ttXVJ27XQ?si=9bhOq6lOCJT56tCR
awesome!
Thanks!
Tnx for clip I think she should line up her right arm with 9 clock when she touch down with right foot in the center. Her arm is at 7 clock, it would give her more torque when her left f lands. She would catch m7ch more behind, flexibility plays big role. Right foot is way to early of the ground during final release, its hard to do bcs she do reverse.
This intrigues my brain
As a part time coach/full time engineer this video is extremely interesting to me.
Che=more rotational inertia, less separation. Alekna=Less rotational inertia, more separation, more linear speed.

I don't coach anyone in person currently and just offer tips to anyone that wants to DM me videos to my Twitter account. This has allowed me to help more people throughout the world than I ever cold have working at a local school or university. I use www.kinovea.org/ for video analysis. Au revoir
Hey I've been following your channel for a while and I have learnt so much from you! I'm a decathlon/heptathlon coach and this is my first season as a coach. And I don't have much experience with shot put. I have a question about the right leg in the glide shot put. After the glide when the right foot lands on the ground and the power position is hit, should the athlete put as much force in the ground with the right foot as they can while they are turning their knee in? Is that correct? I ask this because one of my athletes has a great extension with their left leg and uses a lot of power from that leg but the right leg doesn't seem to do much. Thank you! Cheers from the Netherlands
Welcome Coach! I had no idea I had subscribers from so many places I've never visited. In an interview David Storl said he's trying to get his right knee to the front of the circle by traveling the greatest distance he can horizontally. At least that's how I interpreted it. So, in addition I think of the forward knee drive 2 ways. One I think of it like in the javelin. You want the right knee to quickly pass through when the bodyweight is passing above. It's effortless. By rolling onto the big toe the knee drops down which drives the right hip forward against the left leg block. Two, I think of the right knee driving forward and staying low like the left knee dropping into the discus circle. That motion creates a tremendous amount of linear drive into the circle. Have someone hold your right arm as you drop in from a South African and you'll probably pull them across the circle. So, with these two examples I'm saying I don't believe you have to think about applying force down and against the ground with your right foot. I also don't think about toe, knee, hip sequence. I think hip, knee toe. Cheers and good luck! -Coach Nels
Here's a video I made a while back showing how I think of hip then knee then toe. th-cam.com/video/cA5lo2GVa8M/w-d-xo.html
Thank you for your quicky reply and for such a detailed explanation! Do keep posting these awesome videos :) What I really like about Storl's technique is that he is so tall in the finish and his legs are close together at the release. My athletes have a tendency to make themselves small and then I show them what Storl looks like at the release and we work to get them to stay tall at the release.
You are most welcome@@leonstuij9540 . I think he's tall at release because he keeps his eyes, chest and head up. Young throwers tend to bend forward at the hips trying to reach far past the toe board which cause the eyes, chest and head to go down making them small and while the arm goes up so they split forces. The top throwers actually don't extend very far past the toe board at release. I'll keep trying to find new topics and make videos and hopefully all my subscribers will find me more subscribers! Thank you!
Newton’s first law applies to why the acceleration point is at the end of Discus traveling away from the sector. If the Discus is accelerating moving away from the sector it will take GREATER force to direct it back towards the sector. By waiting for the Discus to travel into a neutral direction which starts back towards the sector, more energy(force)can is available to be put into the throw instead of wasting it redirecting the Discus path back towards the sector. Gravity will bring the Discus into position without using energy reserves.
This reminds me of Geist when he was in HS. Very fast acceleration throughout.
Coach, an excellent video, great graphics. I'd only add there's a good reason the discus doesn't accelerate until a bit later than most might expect. It simply lacks an "accelerant." From the the point out of the back of the ring at full backswing to begin the throw (zero velocity/acceleration), the body begins turning and driving discus velocity/acceleration via pivoting hips, swinging a wide right leg and also pushing off with the left leg. We might add that some here get added acceleration if they whip their left arms around. That's it; the discus is now in motion being dragged behind at a velocity and acceleration owing to these forces. Now, the thrower is airborne, has access to no accelerants and is, if anything, actively trying to slow the discus orbit, to stay "wound up," to maintain separation relative to the body. The thrower will use this "wound up position" to its advantage later. Then, the right foot landing in the ring's middle is a de-accelerating force (gravity vector/friction) and the same for the left foot as it lands at the front of the ring. But, you have your anchoring now, no longer "shooting a canon out of a canoe." So, there it is now awaiting another accelerant and you show it clearly to be the right hip/knee drive dragging the discus through with some visible acceleration. The Alekna tribe seems to have it all sorted out really well, that's for sure!
Came out of nowhere too, that was like a 8ft pr
Study and explain Ulf Timmermann"s technick, Mr.Nels ! Look for the best, Storl was only a pupil !
I need close-up non-grainy video for details! Timmerman was so tall he didn't have to shift into the toe board like Storl. Storl has interviews and technical videos with his coach explaining what he's doing in the ring. I really like Werner, Timmerman etc but I don't as much info but I will analyze Timmerman soon as best as I can with any video I can find but as always it will just just be my interpretation of what I see.
Last monday, Mac Wilkins had two 1 hour webinars on discus throwing (Coach Mac has clips from these on his youtube channel). Seeing him in the snapshot reminded me of the answer (which isn't in the clips currently posted). Mac said you can't pick up your right leg if there's any weight on it, simple physics but true! So the answer is to shift weight to the left foot faster and with more precision to get on balance. Then you have to ask yourself, what are we doing with the legs at the back of the circle? You're creating torque, force cross lever arm as my frosh mechanics professor would say. This is maximized when the force is 90 degrees to the line between the feet, the lever arm here. 12 o'clock is perpendicular to 9 o'clock, right on there.
Those videos with the coaches including Alekna's coach Mo are really eye opening. I laughed when Coach Mo said Alekna doesn't think about any of that when he drives into the circle. Makes me rethink that everything we see on competition video isn't intentional! You are definitely paying attention and I see a future biomechanical engineer.
Right foot kicks straight ahead, keeping the hips opened
From what I've seen and tried the hip and knee move forward and the right foot seems to just go along for the ride. You can really feel the separation in the knees when thinking of the hip moving forward first instead of driving to the left.
It was very useful, keep going)
This was my issue!!!
Glad the video helped!
How do you feel about him powering off his toe rather than his heel from the back of the circle?
Personally I think you can get a lower angle right leg and drive farther across the circle if you come off the heel plus I like the momentum created from dropping down and dropping the heel as you roll from the toe to the heel. But then Gong pushes off the toe and she won the Olympics. th-cam.com/video/QQd9YjC-mUM/w-d-xo.html
Forty years five + ago I was a 62’ high school thrower who strived to use a Feuerbach-style glide. It was never comfortable trying to leave the back off the heel and turn the right foot in mid-air. It looked good but made me a bit slower than I would have been had I pushed fully off the ball of my foot, quickly tucked the right leg under me, and instantly rotated the foot forward through the power and delivery phases. If you examine the great gliders Timmerman and Storl, this is what they did. Upon reflection I would have likely thrown farther with their technique. The great spin throwers also land in the center on the ball without regard to getting that foot 90 degrees to the line. I was 6’0, 200lbs and relied on speed and an explosive release. I know that a more vigorous push from the back off the ball of my foot would have been more powerful to enable greater speed across and through the circle.
Ramona Pagel came off the toes also but from this view th-cam.com/video/TB9ZYwCCAfI/w-d-xo.html she actually started with her foot pre-turned about 45 degrees. What I see in this video is what I've seen before is that the right leg doesn't fully extend when pushing off from the toes although Gong does fully extend. I once saw a quick video where Dan Pfaff was explaining why it was important to turn the right foot before it leaves the back of the circle. Something about muscles stretching. I like the Zelezny philosophy. "Whichever throws farthest is the best technique".
@@Throws_Coach_Nels indeed. Individual anatomy plays a role as well
Fellow coach here, I love your analysis videos! if i send you a video of my star thrower would you be able to take a look at it?
You bet Coach. Just DM the video to my Twitter (X) account twitter.com/nelsph0119
Great analysis, thank you for sharing Coach Nel!
My pleasure!
If he could stay on right foot longer and rotate grounded, that would be huge
What I'm noticing is reverse throwers rotating the right foot to the front then sliding the foot forward low to the ground and around the left side block. My feeling is they are continuously pulling the discus with the right hip through release which requires the right foot to slide forward.
@@Throws_Coach_Nels i agree, but just a little bit longer r foot on ground would be great, something between rev and nonrev. That was my problem when i threw shot
Obviously this technique works for him tho . He says his height if release is better when he jumps into the throw like that also goes further so whatever works for him
