The song, "Impeach the President", takes its drum pattern from "Funky Drummer" by James Brown; one of the most widely heard beats sampled and interpolated in hip hop, R&B, jazz and pop music. The hi-hat is opened on the sixth note of the drum pattern, similar to "Hihache" by the Lafayette Afro Rock Band which does so on the 8th (which is hidden in several R&B songs) and this means that some songs which sample "Impeach" also interpolate "Hihache", e.g. Ronny Jordan's "Come with Me". The first artist to sample “Impeach the President” occurs in a live performance was Force M.C.’s (later be known as Force MD’s) on their 1983 song “Live at International Broadway”. The opening drum sequence has since become one of the most widely used samples in hip hop. 2 or 3 years later, According to Mark Katz, Marley Marl in 1985/86 "became the first hip-hop producer to sample and reconfigure a recorded drum break" when he used the drum break from "Impeach the President" as the instrumental basis for MC Shan's song "The Bridge", the (uncredited) co-production of the 1986 songs “Eric B. is President” by Eric B. & Rakim, “Make the Music With Your Mouth, Biz” by Biz Markie. American rapper GZA makes a reference to the "Impeach the President" sample on his verse on "As High as Wu-Tang Get" by Wu-Tang Clan on the 1997 album Wu-Tang Forever, with the suggestion that the snare drum in the sample is easy to rap over. ("You can't flow, must be the speech impediment / You got lost off the snare off 'Impeach the President.'") Elsewhere, Public Enemy rapper Chuck D rapped on “Rebel Without A Pause” on the 1988 album It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back, “Impeach the president - pulling out the ray-gun”, a reference to both the famous sample and Reagan’s (‘Ray-gun’s’) bizarre ‘Star Wars’ nuclear missile defense shield. Following those beats and the official inclusive “Impeach the President” in the legendary Ultimate Breaks & Beats series in 1987 (Vol. 11), the funk track grew out to be a sampling as one of the most sampled drum breaks ever. In 1987, Audio Two used a two-second sample of "Impeach the President" on the song "Top Billin'". Digital Underground sampled the song on "Flowin' on the D-Line" from their 1991 album Sons of the P. The extent to which The Honey Drippers missed out is perhaps best epitomised by the infamous lawsuit which followed the release of Biz Markie’s 1991 track ‘Alone Again’, a track which sampled both Gilbert O’Sullivan and Hammond’s Honey Drippers. The case brought by O’Sullivan provoked a deluge of considered debate about the morality and legality of sample culture during hip hop’s golden age. Controversially and momentously, it resulted in damages paid to the artist and even a referral to the criminal court. Hammond was not involved - and so received nothing. In 1992, Tuff City Records sued Sony Music and Def Jam Records, alleging that samples of "Impeach the President" were used in three then-recently released songs: L.L. Cool J's songs "Around the Way Girl" and "6 Minutes of Pleasure (Hey Girl Remix)", as well as EPMD's "Give the People", which used a vocal sample from the same song and not the drum track. Claming that a Def Jam recording illegally sampled a Tuff City drum track. The lawsuits were settled out-of-court. . In a commentary in Billboard magazine, Aaron Fuchs, president of Tuff City Records, filed suit in December 1991, bought the rights to "Impeach the President", stated that he charged a "low four-figure sum ... (three figures and less for indie labels)" to license "Impeach the President". By this time Ronny Jordan was using the sample on his first two albums. Digable Planets sampled the song in "Rebirth of Slick (Cool Like Dat)" in 1993. A Sprite commercial in 1995 featured Large Professor and Grand Puba freestyling over the song's breakbeat. Hammond was unaware of the widespread sampling of "Impeach the President" until he heard it used in both "That's the Way Love Goes" by Janet Jackson and "Luv Me, Luv Me" by Shaggy from the soundtrack to the 1998 movie How Stella Got Her Groove Back. It’s also even appeared on recordings for removed from hip hop: Mick Jagger’s 1993 track ‘Sweet Thing’, George Benson sampled the beat on his 1996 track "The Thinker" from the album That's Right. On April 2, 1997, Tuff City Records, who own the rights to the song, The Honey Drippers sued Run-D.M.C. and Dana Dane for their songs “Back from Hell” and “Dana Dane with Fame” respectively because that work “incorporates portions of the original sound recording of the drum track” of a work of the song. More specifically, Tuff alleges that “the sound recordings of certain drum tracks found in ‘Dana Dane with Fame’ and ’Back from Hell’ were copied/sampled directly from a phonorecord containing the sound recording and musical composition entitled ‘Impeach the President.’” Tuff registered the copyright in “Impeach the President” on November 25, 1991, 4 years after Profile released “Dana Dane with Fame” and 1 year after it released “Back from Hell”. They sued and lost in 1991. In a 2013 interview he stated that he has never received royalties from the sampling, and that he was still trying to do so. Hammond also alleges that Broadcast Music, Inc. (BMI) removed several songs from his publishing catalog based on fraudulent contracts presented by Fuchs, and as a result Hammond has received no royalties from them. Hammond's website includes a notice encouraging those who have been sued by Fuchs or any of his record labels to contact Hammond. Hammond has occasionally been credited as a co-writer due to the sample, including on the hit Mary J. Blige song "Real Love", which samples the drum track from "Top Billin'" by Audio Two, which in turn uses a modified form of the drum intro from "Impeach the President". He is also credited for the 2011 Kanye West and Jay-Z song "Otis", which uses a line from "Top Billin'", and for the 2013 Frank Ocean song "Super Rich Kids", which interpolates the chorus of "Real Love". Neither "Otis" nor "Super Rich Kids" contain a sample from "Impeach the President". It recently made a subtle appearance in an episode of Netflix’s hip hop series The Get Down, as well as on Kanye West and Jay Z’s ‘Otis’. "Impeach the President" was among the samples used in Nas's song "I Can".

Jide Obi was a Boy Wonder. He was very driven to Excel. He blazed a trail in the Nigerian pop music scene. He was feverishly creative making music, while studying Law in University of Nigeria. His sonorous voice was the sound track of our teenage years. Jude Obi was a student at Eaton College East of the Niger, otherwise known as Government College Umuahia. I am privileged to say that the intellectual DNA that propel our lives was installed in Government college, where we were trained to be Philosopher Kings.
