    How does you turtle not eat the other fish?😟😤

    • @condorboy1
      @condorboy1 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Usually when I would buy fish I'd by maybe 10. About four of them would always get eaten. The other six survived to adulthood and at a certain point the Turtle Stop caring. Every now and then I will find a fish with a turtle shaped bite in one of its fins but the turtle doesn't really seem to care. As Turtles get older they become more vegetarian and less omnivores so as long as they have lots of vegetation they don't really bother fish.

      Sorry! They're called bio-balls. You could also use ceramic rings. Essentially they're objects that have a lot of surface area for good bacteria to grow on.

    Nothing like an amateur making video's on How NOT to make a filter! The coarse sponge first then the fine one. Also water is supposed to enter the bottom & flow to the top so media is always covered & allowed to do its job & consume the ammonia etc.

    So your pump wont clean out algy? Then whas d point? Of having a filter?

    • @pershop4950
      @pershop4950 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It would suck up any algae spores and loose algae materials, and they will get caught and filtered in the pads. But algae is a constant battle in some ponds, and other algae-prevention techniques should also be used. This filter also serves a function as part of the nitrogen cycle.

  • @condorboy1
    @condorboy1 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Update: Filter still functioning. We've replaced the filter pads at the top once or twice, but everything else is original. Turtle and fish happy.

    • @GlidingBoulder

      The filter will have bacteria in it too, so you dont want to get rid of all of the stuff in them, mostly to just knock out the gunk, the media balls are not the only place that the bacteria are useful.

    Inlet and outlet, do they have to be in different heights? Is all the inserts not slowing the pump from functioning to the best? I have the same hobby and must learn still but am 81y old but still happy and going strong. Fine hobby if You have the time and some money.

    • @condorboy1
      @condorboy1 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Inlet is above the outlet. The water is getting pushed out of the outlet by gravity. The media inside the bucket doesn't slow the filter down too much unless it gets dirty and needs to be cleaned or replaced.

    • @TheArlberg1
      @TheArlberg1 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I caught my boy trying to escape and I noticed he did this every time I turned on his light which he hates so I brought him a turtle cage topper and he loves it. I have two filters and he knocked the inside filter down and pulled the lid off the outside filter and when asked where he's going pops his head out, looks at me sticks out his tongue and pops his head back into his shell. I notice every morning he sticks his head out and when I hand a piece of lettuce loves it.

    gj simple way , design can be improved , the dirt will settle down at bottom where you have outlet that will take it back to pond ! the finest sponge on top will clog very fast , instead the wider mesh or media should be 1st then finnest at the end , another thing i noticed is that you need to clean this manually , instead you can have bottom drain in bucket to clean it my recommendation ... reverse the water flow , inlet should be at bottom where heaviest particles debris settles whicthin basket then wider mesh then on top finest sponge then water goes out from top .

  • @guttedxx
    @guttedxx 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    The media order should be reversed. You should have your filter pads that catch the larger particles first. Then the bio balls should be last because they should get the "cleanest" water.

    • @MrKaraokeVA
      @MrKaraokeVA 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for pointing that out, not to mention the fact that he's pumping dirty water in which will clog the filter pump. I would pull water through the filter so it would be pumping the filtered water rather than the dirty water. Ok, this sounded better in my head but I hope you get the point. :-)

    • @davidlisney2597

      In our ponds the pumps are rated to handle solids so they have very coarse cages in front of the pump inlets, they rarely need cleaning.
