Who missed the diesel electric hidden behind 4014? 🤔
Could a single diesel locomotive handle that load? I'm thinking not!
If yall think for one hot second that the manifest actually stalled, you're crazy. This was set up for a photo-op and a spectacle
The big boy is superior compared to anything the Britis wish they could have he's the most powerful steam engine in the world
Did 4014 endure a wheel slip at 3:52? Sounds like it perhaps
Yeah he did that while pulling his own train.
It looks like the grand old man (4014) to the rescue!
844 is probably smiling from end to end knowing its cousin, 4014 did what it did almost 30yrs ago. The diesels then and know are just sulking in the yards, probably still being laughed at that a steamer helped them up
Good old horse 🐎 Power ! Go Go 4014 Big boy !
Here is 4014 doing what she was designed to do and pulling her own train awesome
Move on I am coming thru
The American version of Super Rescue
Very awesome find!😍😍💖💖🤗🤗🤝🤝
4014..."hold my beer" i got this
4014 was designed and built to haul heavy freight trains over the Rockies. It's really amazing that this locomotive can shove an 11,000 ton train, pull its own and still have plenty of power to spare. it's an amazing sight to see.
A historically locomotive still putting in an honest day's work and has great work ethics to boot.
True power of steam locos boys!
A lot of people think steam is outdated what they don't understand is steam is really not outdated at all not even close a lot of people don't understand that we use steam on a daily basis just for electrical power for starters if I had my own option driving a semi truck powered by steam I would All this talk about at home running solar and all that only works realistically if you're out in the south west of the United States where there's desert a lot of sun things like that or even down in the general south as soon as you start going up the sun goes away frankly might be better off running a gas turbine at home or diesel engine for power generation or hell a steam boiler that uses diesel fuel to heat it and have your own turbine going just saying If you were to use something like a torpedo heater maybe even on the smaller scale like 60,000 BTUs you could literally burn only a half a gallon per hour to heat that water The other thing is besides using it for steam the stuff after you could actually take the heat out of that and put it into a tank to heat water up so you still can take hot showers you got to get rid of the heat out of the steam anyhow and condense it back to water regardless just a thought
About time she does some real work
Dragged its own tonnage too. I honestly believe the engineers that built her don’t truly know her strength cap. Definitely far stronger than what’s on paper
I think I can! I think I can! I think I can! I think I can! I think I can!
Darn straight big boy is awesome
I wouldn’t be mad if this was why I was late to work
Nothing can beat steam, especially big boys
Steam Locomotives, when it comes to it, can Totally match, or even surpass the Power of Diesel locomotives. This is real Life SuperRescue.
Barely braking into a sweat it’s a beast!
no vehicle can beat the sound of raw steam power pounding the rails
Love to steam very much such as 3575 or5735 Fe steam engine
Beautiful train
I think some people forget, that back in "the day" trains were shorter/lower overall tonnage. But, the trucks mostly were friction bearing trucks vs modern roller bearing that roll easier, especially in colder weather. Modern freight trains vs what 4014 pulled in her revenue days is apples to oranges. Still was great to see, especially once she found her footing and dug in hard. I would have loved to heard the stack bark in person. Pushing or pulling tonnage stalled on the grade is hard work, you have no momentum to help, your started from dead stopped. Any curvature adds to the load. Impressive no matter what. Hopefully sometime UP lets 4014 pull some revenue freight like 3985 did with the APL Stacker.
My Grandpa worked for the railroad. He used to say that you could tell how far a train car went into Mexico. The fancier the graffiti, the further it went into Mexico
So I guess the diesel locomotive @3:50 had nothing to do with the movement of the train?
I wouldn't say nothing, as the diesel 4015 carries the PTC controller to interface with UP's network for safety. They run a cable from it up to 4014's cab with the driver controls. Diesel 4015 also provides dynamic brakes since 4014 lacks that feature, gives a boost if they get stuck, and conserves fuel and water between events by moving the tour consist with the steamer drifting on point. For this they might have used the diesel to help get the train rolling and avoid damaging 4014, but then backed it off to let 4014 clear its throat and impress people.
That diesel is probably helping quite a bit.
notch 1 / high idle so diesel just being a dead weight mostly
I used to visit her in Pomona as a static display and watched her get pulled up Cajon Pass to get the refit in Cheyenne. So satisfying to see 4014 working on the rails.
Big Boy was barely breathing while pushing 11,000 tons up the hill.
Reporting marks of the now famous last boxcar.....
Wow she is gleaming!
I'd really love to believe this isn't just a PR stunt. They did the same thing with 844 in the 90s. I used to have the history channel video where it was mentioned.
the fact i was getting gas at the time this happened is making me mad. this would of been cooler

Big Boy has always outperformed it's Offical Numbers i do wonder how it's Performance improved since the Conversion to Oil. My thoughts were based on the poor Quality of Coal U.P. used. Can everyone say 7,000+hp !😊
I'd bet she had power to spare! They almost never Stalled. Hauled more tonage than designed too!
This is how it's done
When push comes to shove! Attaboy Big Brother!
So beautiful
In the late 1960s and early 70s, me and my cousins had the privilege of being able to play on the 4004, at Holiday Park in Cheyenne Wyoming as kids. Now it's fenced in.😢 It never gets old watching the 4014 running.❤😊
Manifest locomotives: thank you my king. 4014: don’t even mention it. Even though I’m 82 I still have my strength.
Is the modern engine there for brakes to function properly since they obviously don’t work on steam these days
Westinghouse air brakes have been standard on US railroads for over 100 years, 4014 can control them by itself. What the diesel provides is a PTC interface for safety, Dynamic brakes since the steamer doesn't have that ability, a boost if they get stuck, and conserving fuel and water between events by having the diesel move the train with the steamer coasting in front. For this they would have put the diesel down to idle so that 4014 could properly clear its throat and impress railfans worldwide.
❤❤❤❤❤❤😊😊😊😊😊
