My Father Lt. Eastes William Murphy USN, DC had transferred aboard the Otus just a month before the Dec 10th attack. He was a US Navy Dentist. Had been stationed at the Naval Hospital ashore. I remember him telling me about the attack...all I can remember is that the Otus was damaged when the sub that was tied up next to it was hit by a bomb dropped by high altitude level bombers...AND a near miss which buckled some plates on the Otus. He said the call went out over the PA to throw some mattresses into the hold, which they used to put up against the leaks....I assume the water coming in was substantial. He also said the first few months were chaotic in that area of operations. USS Otus one claim to fame, escorting the USS Marblehead, a Cruiser that had had it's bow blown off in battle. Otus escorted Marblehead to Ceylon where I think it got some repairs before going back, on its own, to the USA.
