Thank you so much for this illustration! I never knew that only one element is powered at any given time. After replacing the upper Hi-Limit Thermostat, and turning the power back on I wasn't reading any voltage at the lower element but was at the upper element. Once the upper element got up to temp, the lower element got power and the upper element voltage went to zero. Your video explained the situation so well that any novice can understand. I also used a lighter to test the old thermostat and it would never close contacts for the lower element, so I believe it was defective.

Not enough info….

That's actually written in the instructions. At least the one I installed.
Thank you for sharing.
Yes your reply does help me ....thank you so much 💓
You’re welcome. I think 1/2” PVC pipe has a 7/8” OD. However, please double check.
I did that years ago in my living room but the red and the black are on the same circuit.... Lamps on the coffee tables are plugged into the red wire and the bottom is always hot...old school and no big deal
Thank you for posting.
The cabin we bought all pipes are plastic piping pvc or pcv. will it do well on them
Yes, it also works with PVC pipe. Just have to make sure the OD of the pipe works with the ID of the Red Disc. The RDS-C fits a pipe with 5/8” OD and RDS-G fits a pipe with 7/8” OD. Hope this helps.
Yes I will do that .....
Does the neutral have to be broken too?
It depends. The ones I have dealt with the neutral tab should NOT to be broken. If it is broken, the outlet or outlets downstream will lose their natural. This is because, in this case, the neutral is pigtailed. Hope this helps.
Up back lights are going to mess with you too!

Repaired mine for under $10.
👍
I kept mine simple. I removed the res wire from the terminal, capped it off, capped of the red wire in the switch, and put a now outlet which now had full power from the black wire.
👍
Id bang it
🤔
I have the three way set up. But i have one switch that must remain on, so the other will function, what wire must i change to get both to work properly? As i have two sets that are messed up.
It is difficult to say which wire you have to remove. However, if you follow each step in this video, your three way switches will work correctly. Here’s another video that I have that explains how it works in a classroom style: 3-Way electrical switch, how does it work? th-cam.com/video/cCcOydFhI_0/w-d-xo.html
It's a fire hazard and a code violation to connect the WH with a flexible cord.
Thank you for the post. However, it is not a violation in our city.
If you make this mistake, you have no business playing with electric.
I wouldn’t say that. Split outlets are not very common these days and this is an easy mistake to make.
One problem i have is on hot water comes out only. No matter where the temperature unit is pointing towards. Any temporary fix for that issue so i can avoid changing the whole faucet?
I would start by replacing the cartridge.

Or leave the tab if you don’t want a switched outlet. These are usually for a lamp but if you added new lights then it’s useless
Thank you for the post. Definitely an option when both hots are coming from the same phase.
For what purpose would you have 2 hot wires?
To split current loads. Hope that helps.
Usually a 240v application on a 1 phase system. Your plug needs to be rated for it though.
Sorry but Delta instructions states “Place the largest diameter of the spring into the seat pocket first “Not the small diameter of the spring into the seat pocket first
Thank you for sharing.
Wouldnt that make split phase 240? I understand it probably isnt out of phase much but still
Correct, if each wire comes from a different breaker, A and B. I’ve seen it wired both ways. When both wires are from the same breaker or phase, you’ll not notice if the tab is not broken. However, if the wires are from two different phases, you’ll notice it quickly, breakers trip.
As an apprentice the first development I worked on all bedrooms and living room had switched outlets. I bet that shit into my head black on bottom, red on top break the tab. Lol
Thank you for sharing.
😂
🤔
Need to show how to break the tab
Roger that. The longer version shows how to break the tab, as noted in the video’s description. Hope this helps. Do not make this mistake, why a switched outlet is ON all the time, how to correctly wire it. Longer th-cam.com/video/E4vh9y1hm2g/w-d-xo.html
Why don’t you have either both of them switched or both of them permanently on?
You can definitely do that. Back in the 70’s and 80’s the split outlet was common in living rooms where there was not ceiling light. This method of wiring allowed for having a lamp to be plugged into the switched outlet that was controlled by a wall switch near the entry and TV plugged into the other outlet. Very common, but forgotten over the years.
Real info

Replace that piece of crap
No thanks. Repair instead of replace, reduce waste.
Your friendly plumber here you don’t need Teflon or pipe dope if there’s a rubber gasket have a great day.
Thank you for that tip.
If you're using a sawzall, its best to use a Diablo pruning blade. I was able to use one single 6" blade to make at least 50 cuts to roots before it became too dull. Some of those roots were very thick.
Great tip. Thank you for sharing.
This is what I don't understand, the 110 vt going into each terminal of the heating element, where does that circuit complete to ground? It isn't going into one of those tubes and heating it up due to resistance and leaving out the other terminal because ethe other terminal has 110vt going to it. What am I missing?
Good question. The heating elements are 220-240v. So when you measure across the heating element terminals you should read 220-240 v. That’s why you do not see a ground going to the heating element terminals. The ground from the breaker panel connects to the ground of the WH, grounding the case. Hope this helps.
@@JustForYouDiy so if you lose one of the 110vts the element just doesn't get as hot? I should only have readings on the element wires when it is called for heating it up? Both should be 0 when off and each 110vt when on? Thanks again, followed everything else. I'm actually trying to trouble shoot an issue with a automotive parts washer that has two elements in it.
Put it in bucket of water if it reacts you good

I was looking for this last night. This was exactly what I needed to do to fix it.
Thank you for watching and if you find it worthy, please give the video a thumbs up and subscribe to my channel. Much appreciated.
That application usually applies to a living room space or bedroom. Back in the old days, residential homes didn't have any ceiling lights or ceiling fans with lights. The living room and bedroom would only have one switch on the wall as you enter that would turn on the upper half of the duplex receptacle to operate a lamp shade or lamp post.
Thank you for sharing.
I've always switched the bottom outlet as the lamp plug is there to stay, leaving the top outlet available to the possibility of being used by a temporary device .
Switched receptacles became a fad in the 50s, but started falling out of favor by the late 80s. They were also a favorite for cheap builders because they can eliminate a light fixture.
Who would do that ? How did they do that without a spark or a short ?
This mistake, not cutting the tab for a split outlet happens often. Very easy mistake to make since default for outlet out of the box is tab installed. Common application for split outlet are: Living room without a ceiling light, garbage disposal, etc.
lol glacier bay
👍
Garbage!!
Disagree. They work and look great.
110 plus 110 = 220 😂😂😂
