A Rube Goldberg inspired useless machine
Hi!
Are you familiar with the “useless machine”?
The device's sole function is to switch itself off by operating its own "off" switch. The simple model shown at the beginning of the video was inspired by Marvin Minsky's design, who made it as an intellectual joke.
When I first encountered the useless machine, it reminded me of another intellectual joke: Rube Goldberg’s machines. A Rube Goldberg machine is a machine intentionally designed to perform a simple task in an indirect and overly complicated way.

Thinking about these two intellectual jokes made me wonder: “What a Rube Goldberg inspired useless machine looks like?”
Since I have failed to find such a machine online, I have decided to build such a machine on my own.
People are building wonderful Rube Goldberg machines all over the world. I have noticed that the best Rube Goldberg machines not only excel in precision and complexity but, also have a rhythm. The moving parts and rhythm create a dance, with a well-performed choreography. A good example can be seen in the video clip of the song “This Too Shall Pass” by the American rock band OK Go (th-cam.com/video/qybUFnY7Y8w/w-d-xo.html).
My useless machine comprises the simple elements of a Marvin Minsky machine but turns itself off in the indirect and overly complicated way of a Rube Goldberg machine. It comprises a microcontroller, which enables it to perform versatile scripts, but the last movement disconnects the power to the circuits, completely shutting it off.
Now you know what a Rube Goldberg inspired useless machine looks like.
Thanks for watching. If you liked it, give me a "like" and share.

Body Keylogging demonstration - General keypad finger tracking
มุมมอง 8705 ปีที่แล้ว
This is a demo of a body key-logger device. The device tracks finger movements and extracts the code out of the interaction with the keypad. In this video, a general case of finger tracking is shown. It shows how the finger tracking works on any keypad. Body Keylogging demonstration - late extraction

This is a demo of a body key-logger device. The device tracks finger movements and extracts the code out of the interaction with the keypad. In this video, the code is extracted on demand, long after it was entered. I built a light display like this using arduino and biometric sensors (IR, temperature and mic) as the random generator, as cool as it was it wasn't as sophisticated as this interpretation of the useless machine. Love it!
a little motor that throws a swing arm when you flip it on that swings up an hits the simple toggle switch off,, move the switch out of the way and it would just flip up and stick or it would just flip up and down back and forth until you flip the switch off yourself,, too simple is the simple thing that's hid,, the video makers don't even explain,, that keeps you wondering if it's complicated intelligence,, this guy created multiple boxes in series to hit the last switch that's wired to all switches off
I clicked the "Like" icon for this video, but then it automatically took it back.
Fantastic.
_"What is my purpose?"_ _"You turn yourself off."_ _"..........Oh my god..."_
What happens if you more than one switch on at a time?
Never thought I'd see an object that sums up socialism so perfectly 😅🤣😅.....apart from a chocolate tea pot of course.
Fun concept! Useless but entertaining!
I just watched this video
The randomness is exquisite... i wish to play with this device... 🎉😊
I definitely want one of those. I have no idea why.
I'm sitting here with a few ESP-32 boards, some spare time coming up, and looking for a simple project or two I can use to gain a little familiarity with the boards. I think I just found a candidate project. Thank you :)
I am not mechanically capable of building such a machine. Where would I be able to purchase such a fantastic gizmo?
"What is my purpose?" "You turn yourself off." "Oh" *powers down*
I'm a simple woman. I see "Rube Goldberg' and I have a look.
I have that same box except mine says push
Useless machines are not useless. They provide fun and entertainment.
Damn . Thought is was too going to be something about wrestler Goldberg.
Can I use it on ATMs? Asking for a friend.
If you flick a switch while it’s working does it freak out?
More like, dancing than disturbing.
I need this!
Does it come with a Pet Rock?
Oh that is really good! I like the sequential nature of it.
👍
I would love to build this. Any chance you'd consider an instruction video? It more fun than "The Box". Or sell the kit.
I thought that was fun. Any idea why so many people down voted it?
I resemble these machines
I'd love to see this done with only mechanical engineering. No software, just a set of chaotic gears which eventually shuts off the machine, but in an unpredictable way
Neat idea.
Imagine: A useless machine that becomes useful after being used one hundred times
That’s hilarious 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Bro is going to create a Turing machine
very clever and it has its own rhythm. I like it.
That was strangely satisfying. How many combos does it have?
Maybe add a rolling ball...
Please sell these!!
Awesome.
I want one
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA - das ist ja putzig! :D
wow what a useless video ! 🙄
The funny thing is, this machine could keep me busy for hours. 😂
Reminds me of the Repubicans in the U.S. House of Representatives right now, overly complicated & completely useless - except as content for the opening monologues of late night TV hosts.
but what if you flip 2 at once?
This is fantastic!
❤
It reminds me of those game where you have to turn all the ducks around, and each duck turns the ones surrounding it
So we can replace congress with a large box like that
How much to buy one?
Very cool device. It made me giggle when it changed up the sequence. Clever.
