    One of the very best Nessun Dorma ever performed. Lifts the heart with his brilliant diminuendos and stunning sustained high notes and passion.

    His voice was a little more clear than Pavarotti and he was the founder from the epic high end voice part. A champion of classic. BdC

    Far from perfection in my opinion. It's not important how strong and loud the voice is, but how firmly the sound is unwind. In the last and second to last "ce-ro" the sound collapses for the moment and that is impossible for the best Luciano or Placido performances. Listen to 1980 NY Philharmonic Lucianno performance as he attacks the sound with ease, strenght and precision.

      +ZOP2A No one topped the intensity, power, freedom and bold phrasing of Corelli's Nessun Dorma. Unlike Pavarotti's light (straining) lyric and Domingo's limited baritonal (petering out) Corelli soars effortlessly with animal drive, never falters and is electrifying. One reason Pavarotti rarely performed Turandot. Opera critic Robert Levine who heard them all said it best: "It has been a quiet parentheses among opera lovers for years that while great tenors have emerged since Corelli stopped singing, none can compare, at least for sheer voice, with Corelli's dark-hued middle and bottom voice, and steely, luminescent, vibrating, huge, solid top are unique. The experience of hearing hearing him particularly live was visceral, earthy, and thrilling...those who did not experience him in the opera house have been able to feel some of that power (recordings). Pavarotti, quote: "Corelli was the greatest dramatic tenor who ever lived." Domingo: quote: "Sensational..Corelli was the most thrilling tenor I ever heard live."

      +ardis 4 Power is nothing without control as some car commercial states :) And this unpleasent tone of voice. As some other critic has written: "The Nessun Dorma yardstick by which all performances should be measured was created by the legendary Luciano Pavarotti and singers would be wise to follow his lead and master the song correctly before taking it out on tour or adapting it to their own performing style. In other words, sing it clean! Luciano Pavarotti was 59-years-old when he performed the second version of the aria in Los Angeles. He set the standard very high many years ago and his version is hard to beat. The aria flows from his mouth and his vocal tone is transparent and pure. And watch his face. There are no signs of strain anywhere. His mouth is round, his eyes and jaw are relaxed and his forehead is wrinkle-free. This enables him to focus and resonate the extremely high melodic line with consistency, the head voice central to the vocal mix. There is no strain in his voice, no constriction as he sustains and projects the tenor line." Corelli sings absolutely opposed to this and that's why I can't learn to like it, no mather how strong his voice was. He roars like a bull.

      +Xerra Power and virility were only a fraction of Corelli's gifts. Singing Nessun Dorma "clean" with "no strain in voice"--L O L? Where is it written that Pavarotti's thin lyric (less than powerful live) set the standard for Nessun Dorma? Pavarotti can't match Coreilli's visceral intensity, animal drive and electrifying luminescent sound soaring effortlessly as the composer (spinto) intended. --Pavarotti was frequently in a sweat (eyes popping?) straining on the high notes.

      +ardis 4 Pavarotti was a mid sized voice, not small or large, although his voice gained a lot of power by the later 70s and 80s. Pavarottis voice resonated quite well though. I wouldnt say his voice was thin by any means. Of course, the Calaf is best performed by Corelli, as Turandot is a very demanding Opera, Nessun Dorma however occurs when things quiet down during the Opera and its more a less an aria where the voice will carry well with the orchestra. Pavarotti/Bjorling do very well with this, although Jussi never did this in a full Opera. As far as this piece, Pavarotti does well, the full Turandot is a different story, then you need a very large Corelli type voice.

    • @ardis474
      @ardis474 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Robert James Bjorling lacked the stage presence and vocal power for Turandot but he had more expression than the relatively light and colorless voice of Pavarotti. Calif was a stretch for Pavarotti. A role he rarely performed because presumably in his opinion he was not suited to play it.
