Worked with Dave at Cargill Salt for a bit. Wonderful guy.
Unless you know Elon how will you get the grants you require? Elon gets billions of dollars a month from the NASA and related industry budgets. As to Russia there was an International Atomic Scientists meeting two months ago with countries worldwide with Russian nuclear energy scientists attending. Thankfully these scientists are beyond politics. Russia's BN-1000 reactor has six REMIX fuel assemblies working since 2021 using spent nuclear fuel. I was hoping you wound give answer as to what your company hopes to do with 90,000 metric tons of spent HLW nuclear fuel in the United States alone. China announced this week they have found a method to get rid of (reuse) HLW. Burying this toxic pollutant is not the answer.
Cracking amonia to make hydrogen to be injected into natural gas is not the best use for amonia. Industry is cracking natural gas to make amonia at huge volume. Why would yo not just use the green amonia instead??? The best use case for green amonia is to use the amonia to replace amonia made from natural gas. Every time we reform one molecule to another we lose energy. We need to in the begining produce molecules that are already what end users need. If your plan is to crack amonia to get hydrogen to be added to natural gas. Why would it not be better to produce green methane instead of amonia if amonia is not the desired product? Methane is much better for natural gas infrastructure than hydrogen is. Hydrogen is not good for natural gas infrastructure.
I appreciate the gentleman in the interview working on hydrogen generation technology. This is a key industry of the future Green hydrogen absolutely is a prime source for the building blocks for future critical materials. I am in agreement that making amonia is the best use for cheep Green electricity. Replacement of blue hydrogen with green hydrogen is also a great use of green hydrogen.
I do see the use case for electrolysis produced hydrogen and oxygen produced on sight for high heat applications, if your goal is to replace hydrocarbons at a much higher cost. Contingent on availability of huge quantities of low cost renewable energy that does not have a better use elsewhere. That being said, hydrogen for high heat applications works well for small to medium energy requirements but, not at all for large to massive high heat needs. As far as hydrogen for transportation, this is in my opinion infeasible at scale. Because: 1. Hydrogen is extremely difficult to work with. This increases cost of storage and use massively. 2. Hydrogen generaly is damaging to anything it contacts over time and also leaking. Combined with the fact that hydrogen is highly explosive, there is a moderate likelihood for catastrophic failure events and personnel death. 3. Hydrogen storage is difficult and bulky. Also, the energy required for liquefying hydrogen is significant and keeping liquefied hydrogen liquid is also difficult medium to long term. My couner argument is that methane is a much safer, .ore practical alternative to hydrogen for transportation use. Methane can be used in an ICE engine or in a ion exchange membrane like hydrogen. Methane is easier to store and less explosive. Green methane can be made from green hydrogen conbined with carbon capture from industry. Methane can be transported extremely cheaply through our natural gas pipelines already built, and connected to most current users of methane. Which brings up the point that we already have industrial infrastructure that uses methane. We already have many methane vehicles on the road since the 1980s. The vehicle use is well established. Methane vehicles release very little CO², which would be completely offset by the carbon capture used to produce the methane. Methane could also be adapted to airplanes and boats much, much easier than hydrogen. Hydrogen as fuel is mainly a weasel word used to thwart more practical technologies that are well proven and infinitely more practical.
Great episode. Thanks for bringing it to us.
can I ask something ?
No it is not. Stop using climate change as an exuberant to raid my taxes and intern raise my cost of living.
