Wide awake at 4am so I might as well head to the shop. This is the last day I have to make a solid push to move this project forward. My brain is totally fried by the end of the 13 hour day. At the end though the loom is complete and I'm pretty happy with how it came out in the end. Will you repair Proto torque wrench?
Awesome presentation man.. I have a major issue with my sm 04 crf450X plated for the street also here in PA. The initial hit on my throttle eyelids a hard bogg but slow increase in throttle it's fine. If my little brain interpreted your information I think I need a smaller leak jet hole. I'm going to make the adjustment and I'll let you know how it works out if you like. Thanks so much for the content man! Your doing great work
Excellent detailed video. Subscribed. Would you be able to do a demo video calibrating the CDI torque wrench you have in your toolbox?
You completely skipped how to assemble the head. 😂😂😂
Do you have a pdf copy of the diagrams you used in this video?
First Class Explanation!
Why is there a circlip left over on the bench?
Next time you put a set screw down a hole like that - stick a magnet to the allen wrench so the screw doesn't fall off.
I have a very nice craftsman, a torque wrench from 1977 and the seal at the end of the handle is solder or some other kind of metal. How do you open those up to calibrate? Do you think heating it with a torch would melt whatever material is in there? Thanks.
But remember, the pull point that you marked is moving when you adjust the handle in and out for torque so for every setting that you’re calibrating, you need to make sure that you’re pulling exactly at 1 foot or if it’s a long, torque wrench, whatever standardized point you’re using FROM THE CENTERLINE OF THE DRIVE FITTING. Otherwise, you’re inducing error into your calibration. Otherwise, a great presentation!
Good point!
Can you please make a vid of calibrating that cdi torque wrench? I dropped mine and the handle came off…. I was so heartbroken.
such a well informed video on this carb, ive just completed a street legal crf490 build and have been dealing with this nightmare and im bored of having to remove the carb at this point😅 im getting very close but as you say getting the cruise right without hesitation is abit tricky what were the jets and needle specs you ended up with out of interest? also going to get myself an afr gauge so theres no doubt left, ive used afr’s on my cars in the best but didnt think the stock crf electrics would power it.. so good to know this is possible also last thing is could you provide a link to the guide youve made to make the process abit easier when working at the bench cheers for the help, this is an awesome guide
Nice video! Is it normal to block the air jet with your finger while idling and have nothing happen?
The biggest thing I learned from this is I need an AFR gauge. Of the dozens of jetting guides I've seen, none mention this very helpful tool. Seems like everything else is guesswork and an art. Thanks for the tips!
Love your detailed explanation. Where do you get the gauge setup and how to connect it to the bike?
Came here for the CRF vids but i loved PUBG too lol
Please link for the guide line papers.
Man, great explanation, how do we get a copy of those documents you put together? Would love to review it for deeper understanding.
Super well done video..Going to help a lot
You know what man, 5 years ago I custom built a big 650 single with an FCR from scratch with no baseline for jets. Took me weeks and a lot of angry neighbours! I then shortly after got squashed by a kid in a new car and the bike has sat in the garage since. Well iv decided to look at fixing and completely forgotten the jetting orders, in fact was even scared pulling the carb apart. This vid has instantly refreshed my memory, no bullshit, no unnecessary chit chat, straight to the point with all details covered. For what's it's worth here's one random guy on the Internet who is extremely grateful for your time. Now to see if the beast still has a heartbeat... And annoy the neighbours some. Hopefully.
I recognize that song from oceans 11!
Wonder if your crank cases are fretted or warped somehow? I’ve heard of people getting antifreeze in their oil but not tons of gas…that’s a new one to me. You seem pretty knowledgeable about having decent metrology tools so I’d be surprised if you don’t have this tool already but if not getting a small decent granite surface plate would be super helpful in determining if your cases have warped. Using machinist straight edges are helpful too but when you really want to get something flat I’ve had better luck with surface plates. Small granite surface plates are pretty cheap and mechanically ground flat to like 50 millionths of an inch to use as a reference surface for flatness. Putting your cases flat on the surface plate and trying to shine a light between the case and surface plate will tell you instantly if you have a warp problem. If you do see light then using feeler gauges between the plate and cases will tell you how far off they are. You probably know all this but thought I’d mention it just in case. Obviously using sandpaper and a surface would be an easy way to restore flatness to your cases if you needed to.
Were those radiator plugs you were using to plug the intake and exhaust ports on the engine when you were washing it?
Hell ya…new parts day! ✊😎
Nice setup man. Everything looks well thought out. Looking forward to watching the whole series.
Great video man…super well done!!! I really appreciated your well researched, methodical, and scholarly approach you used with the mechanical drawings while explaining the carburetor circuits and carb tuning theory. Everything you said made 100% sense once you explained everything. This video is a great resource and I’m sure I’ll end up coming back to it a few times as I jet bikes in the future. 🤙
Do you happen to have copies of all the paper work?
Less than a 1% tolerance through the whole range? Very impressive. I'm sure you know this but with most click-style torque wrenches the usual standard is 4% +/-. Nice work sir.
Very, very good video 👍👍
I have watched so many vids on how to clean or rebuild these FCR carbs, but very few explain (or do so what any degree competence) what each circuit does with interaction, and what to look for to tune, particularly the air/fuel ratio. And the fyi regarding the emulation tube, and what the hot start does... excellent! I have a few questions: 1- would you post a link to your Tuning Order document? 2- how would elevation affect the air/fuel ratio in terms of target ratios? I'm assuming 12.5 / 13 is still target, just what jets and such it takes to get there would change? (I live at 3k ft and ride between 3k and 9k ft.) 3- what gauge/instrument were you using and how/where did you connect it? I'd love to see a vid on just that :) Thank you for an amazing & very helpful vid.
I have an 08 crf 450r and the previous owner drilled out one of the jets and now it’s very hard to kick start and I have to pull it off to start it with a car and it dosnt idle any tips?
Good logical fault finding. Note taking is essential. Always a great feeling when you problem solve to successful conclusion. Did you take the old fuel pump assembly apart agian and manage to realign the clips?
Good video, one of the best I've seen on how a carb works and the air fuel ratio guage was a bonus. I'm looking at purchasing an afr meter to sort out the afr on two of my bikes. I do have a very nice digital carb balancer that has other functions for fine tuning afr etc. but on my v twin its not stable enough to get a steady reading and a colourtune plugh is not fine enough to see the colour change so an afr meter seems to be the way forward?
Thanks for sharing this process. I have really enjoyed the series especially the wiring harness portion.
I feel like I’m really starting to get it
Dang great rundown. Helping me get more In depth with the carb. Thank you!
Hi, very helpful,One question, if the pilot screw is all screw in, the engine must die?
I have a trx450er it's pritty moded out, almost everything you can think of including head porting. Recently removed the airbox lid installed a DASA exhaust and switched to a uni filter from a K&N. There is abit of studdering when crusing at 1/2 to 3/4. Dyno jet needle middle clip. Do you think I should raise the needle to rectify this studdering? I'm assuming it's lean now due to the increased air flow. Any ideas for jetting? Thanks
but we dont use solder in electrical components in vehicles cus in time (i guess due to mostly vibrations) its getting brittle and just will creating issues? no good idea flippin on the boot under light for it not to pool water? or bad idea perhaps? great vids tho :) keep it up
Huge help. Thank you!
Hey great video! I've seen people asking for a copy of the tuning document you showed. I'm in the process of troubleshooting and rejetting and could use your process. Let me know if you can send this to me. Thanks!
Great video for someone who has no clue about these carbs. I like the cutaway diagram showing fuel and air flow, awesome documentation to have!
the whole dam track now runs backwards,, I last raced there in 1992
We’re did you get that afr gage from. Does it run off a o2 sensor welded to the pipe? Thanks
I was really hoping for some romantic tunes in the background as you were rubbing those parts down. How many GoPro batteries do you go through in a time lapse?
My wife has similar reactions when I meet people to sell items lol
It is nice to be cared about, Hahahaa...
FCR carburator bible. Amen !
Thank You, I appreciate it =)
Lots of planning, I like the hidden TIC switch , will come in handy when Johnny Law is on your 6 !
Thank you for this
