I love the theme theory of Fitz, Nighteyes, and the Fool symbolizing past, present, future! I think the theme of the past works so well for Fitz- his obsession for trying to write an accurate history of the Six Duchies? ❤️
After discovering this podcast earlier in the year and spending months listening to every episode, it feels wild to be caught up at last. It's been years since my last Hobb reread and I have other reading/rereading priorities currently, so I've really enjoyed revisiting the books this way. I agree with your take on Kennit...I have nothing to add but I agree.
I also remembered the face carving happening much earlier!
I wonder if small pieces of the skill stone could be worked for similar purposes as wizard wood? Like the navel piece to prevent pregnancy- is the one Fitz comes in contact with made of wizard wood? Can someone more on the spectrum of a hedgewitch use wizard wood? Skill stone?
That's a very interesting thought! They do have similar qualities like holding memory, but it seems that anyone can carve wizardwood but not everyone can work skill stone. So, if they can work in similar ways, it might be much harder to produce Skill stone trinkets.
I never thought too much about it, but I did assume dragons were different sexes in different lives. It makes sense to me for some reason, maybe since I'm personally nonbinary.
That's an interesting perspective. I wonder if there is any gender identity questions among dragons or if their collective race memories would kind of slot the individual into either a male or female aspect to fulfill the evolutionary roles each gender seems to have?
@IsFitzHappy Interesting thought. Maybe the memories would ease any "gender" problems a few might have, or if they all have memories of being both male and female, maybe it wouldn't matter to them either way. But since it seems like dragons have a certain amount of control over physical development, perhaps it's not even a question of being born into the "right" body. I definitely will be pondering this for a while now, lol
I have an hour commute to work and an hour commute back perfect for listening to the podcasts! Still trying to catch up to current episodes. Occasionally get ahead listening to episodes in the background on my days off.
Thanks so much for listening! I know I love binging episodes of podcasts, so enjoy while you can. Eventually you'll catch up and have to wait for us to slowly post the next episode :D
I borrowed the Liveship books from a friend in middle school - not sure either of us knew the Fitz books existed at the time, but we loved the trilogy and that's what got us to seek out more of Hobb's books. Maybe it's because I was young, but for me all the "reveals" in both the Liveship and the Fitz books hit pretty hard regardless. I remember being super confused about stuff that became clear when I got to Fitz's story, but it was fun figuring it all out so I don't feel like I lost anything by reading it out of order.
Lol I also imagine Kennit looking like Hook, though not exactly sounding like him
the name "Grag" tho....
A little too close to 'rag' for my taste 😂
@IsFitzHappy or "gag", lol. The name really doesn't suit him.
I appreciate the sensitive venture into Kennit's character here.
Congrats on 100! (I got here late, you currently have 220 episodes out. I am just trying to catch up.)
What is this? I assumed it was a reading of the book? So far Just opinionated hot air.
See the above comment for a short example of how to appear as both an idiot and a dickhead with brevity lmao
Hi! We're a podcast that discusses the books a chapter at a time. I'm not sure how you found us when you are looking for audiobooks, but I don't believe those are available for free anywhere as I'm sure that would violate copyright.
Bee is a Farseer and she does see far!
These are not the books? These are just to random people talking about the books? Who would enjoy this?
man i remember reading this book 12 years ago and man was i enthralled. I also read it as bjorik lol cant wait to listen to this. There was so much i questioned but man to this day i can't bring my self to finish the 9th book. Im about 3 chapters left and just can't.
To hype you up for the end, you can always reread! (Also be careful, there are spoilers for all 16 books in the podcast!)
great discussion on this difficult and fascinating chapter. Fitz's "heart's desire" here reeeeeeally illustrates all the brain & psychic damage he has sustained at this point.....
"He doesn't have the guts [to kill his grandfather]!" haha
Excellent reading.
Regarding the ceremony it strikes me as something more meant to foreshadow fitz’s role as the catalyst rather then anything to do with world-building considering this ceremony is never bought again in of the books after this.
Yes, as much as I love Burrich, nothing displeases me more about this series than his marriage to Molly. It was just too cruel
It makes sense in character, but it's definitely a huge blow for Fitz!
I thought Molly's edge of fear was more about how he described exactly what happened in Siltbay when there was no earthly reason for him to know something like that.
I'm deeply shocked Burrich wasn't even a possibility for favorite character! :) He was my favorite since the minute he appeared - he was obviously very complicated, so really interesting.
I actually did start at Liveship, not realizing there were other books. And it definitely was confusing that way, lol
im not really into this type of stuff on yt but this popped in my recommended somehow, but you seem dedicated to this i mean 189 podcast episodes with less than 10 views on most of them. Hopefully you find a viewership with this :)
Hey, thank you! We also publish through traditional podcasting applications (apple pod, spotify, etc) and I like to think we have a great community! Appreciate the support.
the Fool is always disappointed with Fitz, lol
I don't believe for a second that Chade had no hand in the queen's situation.
Really interesting thoughts on Queen Desire!
never thought Fitz was upset with his mom - seemed like the memories were just too painful
Yeah, there are some really cool thoughts in the fandom about that. Some think Shrewd might have taken some of Fitz's memories to maintain his 6 Duchies loyalty, repression of those memories, or even his memories of her were put into the girl on a dragon. I think the thought process for that comment from Emma is that the 'upset' part of him was just the pain of feeling abandoned. It's not necessarily an anger at his mother. -Luke
I read it as Bur-rich also.
Yeah, I think Robin Hobb wrote it with the word 'burr' and 'itch' in mind, but we had to stay consistent, so we chose and stuck with one. Between you and me, I still say Bur-rich in my head. --Luke
@@IsFitzHappy I'm sure Margaret did intend for it to be said the way it's read, I find most of her names are that way, often makes sure there is no confusion in the matter. I read all of her books at 15 at night in the garden under candle light while under the influence of psychedelics. very strange part of my life but the books are the only thing from that period that really stand to light. I feel like I lived them for a few months. Burrich was always one of my favourite characters, probably the lost father figure I never had, Verity was also very beloved.
I always thought it as Bur-rick but I like the agreed-on pronunciation much better
I was reading the last trilogy a few days ago and as I was listening to this i remembered the part where Tintaglia almost kills Fitz in Kelsingra. Couldn't help but agree with Bendir and the mother to chop that bitch up. Make some sturdy planks, build a ship, a barge or something.
Really support your guys work, keep it up 👊
Thanks so much!
A engaging listen! One fact check- Fitz did know while writing this account (post the Farseer trilogy) that elfbark deadens Skill. Nettle had told him during her trainings in Book 3.
Thanks for tuning in! It's been a few years since we recorded this episode to begin with, so thanks for the correction! Please keep that up as there is a lot to cover in this series for only 2 people to remember as we ramble. And even though Kettle warns him of Elfbark, he has never been wise, as someone is fond of saying :)
I would guess that Mere might be Chuyrda for mom rather than his mom's actual name.
That's a great thought! We had another listener once say that it was close to the French for 'mother', so I think that tracks with what you're thinking.
The part where fitzs take the knife and stabs it into the mantelpiece is simply him being justifiably angry at shrewd and to chade to a certain extent. Because if fitzs was just obeying a skill suggestion why would he stab the mantlepiece instead of just giving the knife to chade.
I agree that his choice to take the knife and stab it into the mantel was more an act of anger than him obeying a skill suggestion. But I think the skill suggestion theory still has merit. Perhaps when Shrewd tells him that it was his command, that may release Fitz, either from the potential skill suggestion to be loyal to Shrewd, or more likely makes it clear to Fitz that to take something from Shrewd and give it to Chade would not be disloyal, because it was Shrewd's command, thus enabling Fitz to take the knife.

Hi Luke, hi Emma, I just wanted to thank you for your great podcast! I read the realm of the elderlings in it’s entirety once, Farseer and Tawny Man twice and recently started my reread for the entire series. Because I can’t get enough Hobb content, I started your podcast and I really enjoy it! Whenever I finish a book now, I listen through your discussion of that book. I am now listening to your discussion of royal assassin. It’s a great way for me to delve deeper into the books and spend more time in the world. I know that I have quite a lot of episodes to catch up on, so I just wanted to take this opportunity here on this most resent episode of yours to thank you! I hope you continue to enjoy your journey with the reread and the podcast :) have a great week :)
Thank you so much for the kind comment! This is exactly what we hoped when Emma and I started the podcast. We just wanted to keep talking about it and hoped others would, as well! Enjoy! -Luke
