Genre: Christian portal fantasy
Audience: Middle grade, young adult
Positives: I love the imagination of the fantasy world, creatures, and races. The author has goblins and elves, but she gave them unique traits, and she created so many inventive, interesting, and thought-out creatures and elements of Ezra city. I enjoyed discovering new parts of the world through the whole book.
The themes of overcoming fear and having joy despite darkness were clear and consistent through the story. The characters began with struggles and grew through the events more and more until they had realistically learned those lessons by the end.
The characters’ growth felt real and realistic and provided a good example of real humans with real struggles working to move forward.
The progression of the story and the variety of situations, problems, and events kept my interest. The story has adventure, action, a wide range of characters, multiple problems, beautiful and interesting settings, layers of antagonists, fun and meaningful dialogue, battles, romance, not easily won resolutions, setbacks, and an end that provides closure without dragging.
The elements of Christian fantasy stood out boldly yet were well incorporated in the story. The message about Jesus and the Bible verses fit perfectly into the plot so that it all felt true, relevant, and realistic.
The characters felt like real people. They made mistakes, and I felt for them when they met tragedy or difficulties.
Negatives
The book wasn’t predictable, but it didn’t have surprise or intrigue because the first section revealed the whole back story.
The book feels long, and some more editing could have helped.
Some elements made the book seem like it was only for Christians. It never came across as something that would turn away non-Christians, but it could cause a bit of confusion.
Overall: A magical adventure and thrilling battle of light vs. darkness
4 stars

I am glad I got it! Woot! So exciting!❤

I don't know you, I don't what your book is about, and I dont know how close I am to god. But your excitement is so touching and inspiring. I will download it on Black Friday and read it on Sunday. Good luck to you and your journey! I look forward to reading it.
@@weepingfig2044 Wow, thank you so much for your kind words. ❤️ I hope you enjoy Anelthalien. Thank you for wanting to read it.
What a beautiful baby
@@greeneyedmimibostian3013 😊
Oooh yayyy! I'm soooo curious ❤
@@authorjoannawhite 👏👏👏 I'm so glad you're curious!
@hapruitt.anelthalien ♥️♥️♥️
First of all, thank you for this awesome, kind review!! Also, That is the weirdest misprint I have ever seen!!! Hahaha and I don't believe it's printed in every book! 😂 I can't even be that mad about it because it's truly bizarre.
You're welcome! You wrote such a great story. ❤ That makes it even weirder that the misprint isn't in every book. 😅
That is a really weird misprint to have happen! 😱 I feel bad for the author. Sounds like a great book though.
That misprint was so strange!
Have you read this book? Do you love portal fantasy?
Why not use the style sheet for formatting? Then if you want to change something later it is much, much easier.
Yes, using a style sheet for formatting makes it easier. Whether or not you use a style sheet, though, it can be hard to change something if you go back and do it later.
Yay!
Great advice! 😊
Thanks!
Done ❤
@@authorjoannawhite Thank you so much!
What publishing platform do you use? Does it require a PDF?
Blurbs are the hardest thing to write. 🫣
I have six sections to my book with 10-14 chapters in each section. Should I use section breaks for the six sections and page breaks for each chapter?
@pauladominique I would use section breaks for each chapter and between sections. Page breaks can cause problems when you change the document to a PDF for unloading.
@@hapruitt.anelthalien I assume that would apply to all pages, including TOC, copyright, dedication, etc. I want a reflowable e-book as well. Any complications to expect when converting to e-book?
My book is already an e-book and I'm converting it to paperback, so I can't highlight all the text, since my chapters, etc are already there. Do I have to highlight one chapter at a time, omitting the titles, etc and then set margins each time? Maybe that's why the margins I've been setting are not working, and Microsoft keeps warning me that they're not fitting the printable part of the page.
I've never done that, but that probably is the problem since the e-book has different formatting. When you set margins in the pop-up box, it gives the options to apply the margins to that section or the whole document. If clicking the "whole document" button doesn't work, then you may need to set each section individually.
My chapter titles are the names of the stories, not numbers. "splendid Splinter", ""Summer Interruption", "Gone Again". They are also in a custom font called Flower Days. Do you suggest I keep headers to match the TNR 12 I'm using for the body?
I would either use TNR to match the body font or try to find a font that looks similar to your custom font. Since the header will be pretty small, also consider if the fancy font will be clear as a header.
Went with 6x9 and set margins at .25 everywhere but the gutter (.375) and Microsoft says some of the margins are outside the printable area! What???
kdp.amazon.com/en_US/help/topic/GVBQ3CMEQW3W2VL6#margins That link will take you to KDP's page about gutters and margins. I didn’t do anything video about bleed or no bleeding, but that may be what's going on. If you want your pictures to go all the way to the edges of the pages, you'll need to set it up according to the bleed margins and select "bleed" in the set-up options.
@@hapruitt.anelthalien No bleed needed 'cause no pix. I finally got it to accept the numbers I input, but I don't like the look. Outside margin is too small, IMO. Scared to start tampering with it now. I like the margins you have on the "Tiny Sam" book, but mine is over 200 pages, so yours might not fit KDP requirements. What are your numbers? Maybe I'll see if they fit and if Microsoft accepts them without telling me I'll be printing outside the page margins. Thanks. Like your clarity on these tasks,
I''m formatting a chapter book for 9-12 year olds. It will be at Amazon as paper, kindle, and audio. What sizes does Amazon support for that kind of book?
Yess I agree. I do the same where you go through one formatting thing through the book to keep it all the same and not confuse yourself. Now Atticus my program helps streamline the process
@@authorjoannawhite Yes! I forget things if I go back and forth.
Page headers take the longest. 😮💨
What is your favorite children's book?
I think it's also great to hear the dialogue! Sometimes it reads fine but hearing it aloud makes a big difference 😅
@@AnnaReneeTheFae Yes! I like to read the dialogue out loud to hear how it sounds.
I do this at least twice between several rounds of editing.
This just randomly came into my feed. I am just a casual writer, usually it’s for venting or to help me fall asleep. No one reads it, sometimes I talk about it or draw it (I’m mainly a drawer). And sometimes I roleplay. I much prefer present tense, so I don’t think I have the same issue with extra prepositions, but sometimes I take an extra second to think whether or not I need the “of.” I’ll check out your series when I get a chance!
I like to draw what I think and feel too! Yeah, for casual writing, or even for a first draft, it's good to just let it all out without worrying too much about details like extra prepositions. And I'm am so glad you want to read my Anelthalien series! 😊
Thanks for the information.
@@GlovyaExim You’re welcome!
For me it was had. He had gone, she had said. Unnecessary temporal control is a hard drug to quit.
@@onenof10 Yeah, we all have that unnecessary writing habit. 😅
Well, "he had gone" and "he went" are two different tenses entirely... do you mean that you are using the pluperfect tense too much?
What do you include in your author bio?
Me 😂 such a great tip In my pre edit of remnant I said in and around all the time! Like in and through or in and around buildings people etc 😂
Who else does this? 🙋♀️
That last one. 😂😂
Yep. Ive done this sooo many times so I've learned i need to take things slow to make sure I don't make things worse 😅 such a great tip. I really really hate implementing edits. Worse part of editing for me for sure
@@authorjoannawhite I actually like implementing edits. 😅 It goes so much faster than reading through, so I feel like I'm getting so much done so quickly, but that's also why I need to remember this tip to slow down. 😅
@hapruitt.anelthalien haha yeah I totally understand that. I also think it's hilarious that you love it and i hate it. I literally hate doing it soooo much lol. But I try to go fast to get it done so it's hard for me to remember to slow down too. You've got this!
Your content is precious…I LOVE IT, and especially the way you explain it! So much potential here!!!!
Have you read a short story collection by the same author?
This is so true. You wanna be happy with your book. Like including the maps and deleted scenes and a bit of the narrative from the TV show at the end of Immortal the kickstarter edition made me so happy so I love that version. I'm so excited for you and glad you got to do the title pages for yourself. I'm also sure they look great! But the title pages matching the font of the cover always matters to me ❤
@authorjoannawhite All that in your special edition sounds amazing! 🙌 I made the title pages match the cover in all my other books, and I really wanted this one to have that too. It just makes it look that much more professional and pretty.
@@hapruitt.anelthalien yeah I agree with that it looks more professional. I'm so glad you got to do it for anelthelian!
The title pages are now what I dreamed of. 😍
I've got this one in my kindle waiting to be read. I really need to make sure I get to it soon.
@marygracewriting It would be good to read on a day you need some encouragement.
Haha yep this is hilarious. I love watching your research! In taekwondo we learned about this. One guy was a black belt and he had long legs so he could kick up above his own head which was 6ft so he could kick around 7ft high. 😮 still impressed me. Im not flexible enough anymore lol
@@authorjoannawhite That is impressive! I figured if I could do it, then a certain character in a certain story could definitely do it. 😉
Do you read the inspiration and "please review" pages?
Thank you for the video. Do you know what trim size I need to set my paper at for a cookbook. I'm wanting a full-size cookbook but I'm not sure what Amazon KDP and Lulu's requirements are as far as trim size. Thank you again for your time.
@@JanetsDeliciousLowCarbKitchen KDP has a chart that you can look at to see what sizes are possible when publishing through KDP. They have quite a few options. This is the link to the page with the chart: kdp.amazon.com/en_US/help/topic/G201834180#trim
Step x: chicken soup. Well done. Keep up the good work.
@@onenof10 Thanks!
My rooster apparently is not a fan of this tip. 😂
How do you stay motivated while editing?
Do you like anthologies?
I literally can't wait to see this ❤
@@authorjoannawhite 😆😆😆
I'm making the green background a different shade, and I'm digitally drawing the title and my name.
Have you ever cut a ton of words by removing fluff words?
Do you read the dedication page?
What are your main goals for your channel?
This is so important! Plus, you don’t want an editor who tries to edit or change your voice. There’s nothing wrong with an editor who points out stuff making sure stuff is clear or intentional, but you don’t want the tone voice and vibe of your creation being completely morphed through the editing process!❤
@Neonblackbatz Yes! That is exactly what I meant! 👏👏
