Why The Gibson Guitar Company is Going Nowhere. From a Younger Guy's Perspective
มุมมอง 6K3 หลายเดือนก่อน
I've heard plenty of times that Gibson only makes guitars for baby boomers, and that their products and legacy are going to die with that generation. I think this has no basis in reality. All my life I've been watching the guitar players I looked up to play Les Paul's, SG's, Explorer's, and ES-335's; and I don't think that is going to stop anytime soon.

Dude! I’ve been saying this for years. All my fave punk bands like TBS, early Fallout Boy, Coheed and Cambria, The Flatliners, Story So Far, Banner Pilot, Propaghandi, Knuckle Puck, Joyce Manor etc all play Gibsons! These are the guys that are inspiring the younger players and keep them wanting a Gibson.

Always interesting topic. The singer from greenday is 52 years old. All bands you mention are quite old. As far as I know this whole youth doesn’t play Gibson discussion comes from one festival some years ago. Worked at a venue for years and there are genres where people use mainly other brands. Did a lot of metal and people hardly used Gibson for example. Same with Indy or more alternative bands. Gibson marketing is focussed towards the older consumers though (All the Slash signatures etc) I wonder about the future of the high priced collectables. Will next gen be crazy enough to pay those prices. That white Studio looks nice. I own a 2013 Tribute. It was a bargain back in 2015.

57 Classics are generally equal output neck and bridge and usually around 7.5K, tho there is a 57+ bridge pickup that's slightly hotter. The bobbins are also wound equally so they're very clear. Alnico 2. Strong bottom end. Burstbuckers are hotter and the bridge is higher output than the neck and the bobbins are wound unevenly, usually the slug coil has more winds. That accents highs and gives them that phasey "chewy" sound.

As a 32 year old Gibson fan boy, there is one thing that prevents me from buying more of them, it’s the price and nothing else. But I’m also a guy who grew up watching his favorite bands play Gibsons almost exclusively (Emo, Pop Punk, Post Hardcore), so those have a special place in my heart. That being said, the barrier for entry is pretty high, the lowest tier of Les Paul’s currently costs 1299 new, and honestly the tributes are very lackluster looking due to the absence of the binding and gloss. Yes yes, “but you get a made in America guitar from the Gibson USA factory”, but it’s boring looking and whether you want to admit or not, the look of a guitar is a pretty big reason people buy them. It’s why I’m sure I could find a “better” guitar for cheaper from other brands, but they don’t look like gibsons. Now, imagine you’re an 18 year old kid gigging with his/her band and need something to play. You stop at a guitar store, and you see a fender player telecaster that’s $800 and IS a fender not even a squier. Which one would they choose?

I went to two music stores today because I was interested in this guitar. I picked it up and held it for 30 seconds. I thought the neck would be rougher and honestly, I just couldn't connect in any way with the guitar. I was really disappointed, but I DID leave the store with a really nice and perfectly worn in 1999 Fender Strat. So, it turned out really well for me. The neck on the McCready WAS nice as far as slim. I really appreciate your video review, and it sparked my interest enough to make the 90-minute drive. Thank you!

Have you tried the combo version? I want to be able to get the marshall natural tube breakup sound at home at volumes that don’t deafen me… but I’m really picky with amps. Rn I mainly use my FSR 1x12 Princeton Reverb reissue, it has a Jensen P12Q, and is made with solid wood unlike the regular PRRIs. It sounds stupidly good both clean and dirty, and if you drop the treble way down to like 3 and put the bass at like 4 it sounds like 90% of a Marshall. But I would like that extra 10% Marshall thing occasionally at home. But the problem I worry about is that FSR PRRI sounds like a million bucks, and I’m worried that the 1 watt combo is gonna sound like a turd in comparison. Bcuz I’m not getting it for cleans, as it could never touch a fender amp for sparkly tube tremolo tube reverb cleans, and honestly when it breaks up it sounds exactly like the solo from “mary janes last dance”, so it’s no slouch dirty. If anybody has experience with the combo version of this I’d appreciate some thoughts on how the 1w combo sounds in person

I didn't know who Mike McCready was. I really don't listen to Pearl Jam. I went into the store today looking for a Harmonizer pedal. I played the usual suspects at Gtr. Ctr. I saw this relic Start. I just went through the different switch positions. It left an impression on me. I went out had a burger. Thought about it for awhile. The neck was really comfortable. I walked back into the store and made the deal. It checked all the boxes I was looking for in my Strats. I will not do anything but change the strings and play this guitar. A nice playable and great sounding Stratocaster. This guitar made my ears and fingers happy. Check one out. This was a accidental worthwhile purchase . Treat yourself. Peace

I love this amp; it does need to be properly cranked to sound good (like all Marshalls) but it can do so at a relatively apartment-friendly volume, at least on the 0.1 mode. Works really well as a practice amp, which is all it was ever really meant to be imo. I also own the DSL20 and it works great for practicing and gigging with my band, but I never play it in the apartment for the reasons you discussed in that video. In fact, I just leave it locked up at my friend's place where we practice! 😂

Thanks for the review. When this head came out, on paper, it looked like the perfect amp for me. Two channels, reverb, line out. But Peavy may have got a bit of a bad wrap regarding quality/durability. An anyone comment on that. Had a great Classic 30 I sold a few years ago. Nice amp but to get it to sound nice its volume needed to be pushed too hard. Small bar gigs are the most I do.

I recently bought a 2024 SG standard. I’d always ignored the SG as I thought the styling was a bit, well, ugly. I’d gone into a local store to check out the new Gibson Les Paul studio. I was talked into trying an SG because they were on sale, same price as the LP studio. I rather reluctantly agreed to try an SG. As soon as it was in my hands I was shocked. How does something so ugly feel so good in my hands? Once I plugged in and played it, I knew I was going home with an SG. I also played the Standard 61, but I preferred the oh so slightly bigger neck on the Standard. I chose transparent teal. Stunning colour in person. I’ve had mine for two weeks now and I love it. It’s my number one. For reference I have a mim strat and a tele. I’ve also owned an epiphone Les Paul 50’s, now that one had a fat neck! Like you, the pickup height on the SG seems a bit strange, but I’ve left it alone. I liked the setup right out of the box, I had no QC issues at all. However, I have to keep the humidity in my home rather high at 80% due to skin issues, and now need to change the setup on the SG. Not a big deal. I like the pickups, not sure why so many people don’t like the 490s. I don’t find the neck fat, I find it perfect. My strat has a rather thin neck that feels too thin for me since I bought the SG. The SG feels like home. Neck dive? Dude, I don’t have a problem with it. At all. Most of my playing time is spent sitting down, the SG is so light, so comfortable, I never notice any neck dive. For me it’s a non issue. I think there’s far too much made of neck dive. My word, us players will complain about anything haha! Les Paul’s I’ve played, now there’s where I experience neck dive. While sitting down to play, the neck will slowly start pointing down and I have to constantly readjust my seating position. If I sit with the guitar off to my side a bit, instead of right in front of me, then the LP doesn’t dive, but that position is uncomfortable. Anyway, I’m rambling, I’m glad you like your SG!

The SG is my absolute favorite guitar. I could play country, classic rock, blues, jazz, and yes, metaland shred my behind off on it. The PRS body shape is the result of PRS trying to find the midway between a Les Paul and a Strat. He wanted a guitar that could do both (enter coil splits.) The McCarty is the result of him incorporating what he learned from McCarty to bring a more Les Paul spirited instrument to the PRS form factor.
