Drawing vs Drawing like a Painter

One of the key differences between drawing and drawing like a painter would paint. If you like oil painting, charcoal could give you a similar feeling when drawing and might also help you being more loose in your approach to drawing. It looks well built which to me is important, and I agree it's a good size for painting on the move. I think everyone has their own needs and desires when it comes to art equipment. For me, I want a pochade box that will also carry all my materials so that's what I shopped for. Others like these boxes which keep the palette and the other equipment separate. To each their own!

    • @RobertoDomeArt
      @RobertoDomeArt 8 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Totally agree. The reason I like this type of pochade box it that it's thinner, as I usually place different things in different pockets or compartments of my art bag or a backpack without needing a large open compartment or carrying a wooden suitcase :P What pochade box do you use?

    I noticed that with the main body (medium size) and the two flaps for brushes, it’s about the same weight as the Sienna plein air medium pochade which is cheaper but bulkier. I feel like there’s a market for a super lightweight minimal pochade box that’s around $100-$150. That will be the sweet spot for a lot of artists including myself.

    • @RobertoDomeArt
      @RobertoDomeArt หลายเดือนก่อน

      Never tried the Sienna plein-air but for me being able to fit everything in a big shoulder bag or small backpack is very important. Weight is important too of course and I feel that all pochade boxes on the market have a compromise one way or the other, even though I'm personally ok with the u.go weight (but i'm not using the glass palette with it). There are few artists making and selling their own pochade box, I'm not sure about the price but I believe something like @patrickokra one might be lighter? He has a video on his channel about his plein-air setup. Hope that helps.Thanks for your comment.

    i dont know if you are an artist or not.. but i DO know that you have absolutely no clue how to edit a video or even how to setup a mic so your voice DOESN't come out muffled and make it hard to understand a single word. while speaking english with an hardcore accent that is hardly to understand. the parts where music is running in the background are just not possible to understand. brooo.. plssss.. just stop. or at least buy a good mic. maybe visit an editing course. or maybe, hey, do your thing.. and.. "trust the process". MAYBE, next time: do it in your native language for people who actually understand you without problems. if you get a mic. and some skills. in something. i GET it. you want to be famous on youtube SO FCKN MUCH! because you want money and fame and all the things a real artist is sh*tting on because, you know.. he is a real artist. but, broooo, dont make yourself a fool infront of the WHOLE WORLD! greetings from germany.

      What a rude comment. What I do know is, that TH-cam is sometimes a place of trolls. I love his accent and (also as a german) I can absolutly understand him. His editing skills are good and nowhere near as bad as you describe. To tell someone to stop something he has a passion for is just stupid. I can't follow the advice to use a different microphone either, the spoken word sounds quite normal to me. You should be ashamed of your "wisdom".

    The thing I do that makes me draw and paint everyday is an idea I have had a few months ago: "When we begin drawing and/or painting, you can expect to invest many hours working on this piece of art. So why not put these hours into good use. "How?" you will ask. well, look at you. you draw, and you paint. But chances are that these are not the only skills you want to develop. There are book, courses, and useful video notes about other skills that you want to install into your memory bank so that you advance your career, improve your relationship with your loved one, increase your happiness, etc.. so, if visual things stick in the mind better than words on paper, why not... why not draw and paint the notes of the skills you want to develop ? think about it. you are going to face a canvas/piece of paper for hours (or much less, if you want. Just draw with the duration you are comfortable with) so might as well draw something or paint something that summarizes your notes in a visual way.. or you can write the summarized notes in the piece of paper, and start drawing. the result will be that you will internalize these notes, and you will have practiced drawing/painting today, so you achieved multiple things at once. so draw the quotes you really love, draw the screenshots you take instead of just saving it in your phone, draw that scene from your fave movie, TV show, or Anime! say to yourself,: "I love experimentation. and a person like me always succeeds. even if I make a mistake, I see it as progress, and in reality, those who make an artistic mistake like drawing the proportions wrong or anything, are awesome because Since the majority of people don't want to fail, they won't practice, so this mistake here has made me 100% percent better than them, soooo, in actuality, every mistake I make artistically separate me from competition; I go forward, while they stay in the same place...

    Fantastic video with so many gems + great camera work and editing as well. A lot of us can get stuck in the trap of thinking our problems are too complex, and that simple solutions like waking up early, achieving a small task or two before the start of the day, building self-confidence and discipline through exercise, simply won't work. Don't let your procrastination have its breakfast. Thanks for making this video, keep it up! 💙

    I was looking for some recommendations on pochade boxes and saw your video... well, some €400 for a pochade box with no storage is way overpriced in my opinion. I could ask someone to do it by hand and probably save money. Said that, I'm curious to see how it goes, specially watercolour (my preferred medium). Also, if you could use metric system, please? Or maybe both. I find it very hard to wrap my head around imperial measures. Anyways, thanks so much for the video! It was really interesting seeing you assemble and test it, and I appreciate a non-sponsored review 👌 And you're so enthusiastic, it's contagious!

    • @RobertoDomeArt
      @RobertoDomeArt 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      wow that's expensive. I think I got mine here in Australia for like 300aud on sale..(180euro). There are other artists making their own pochade boxes and selling them, you could look up Leon Holmes or Patrick Okrasinski. That said, I find it such a joy to use with gouache and oils, but for watercolor I would still go for building something like the Guerrilla Painter Flex Easel out of wood or aluminum or simply use a mdf board with a t-nut glued in the middle of it to be able to attach it to a tripod head (this was my previous setup and it's so easy to make and so practical). I then screwed at the bottom of it a piece of balsa wood to be able to hold sketchbooks too (kinda like a music stand). Hope this helps :) And sorry for the confusion on the measures. I'll use both systems next time, thanks for pointing it out. Thanks for your comment!

I'm so sorry about that, I sound far grumpier than I should & with the wrong info D: I would still prefer something with storage, but £200 is a price I would pay for good quality. • @MarkWhippy
    @MarkWhippy 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I got the smaller version, they're very very good, but I do think they're overpriced. I wasn't able to get the add on accessories because of how expensive they are, but then I realized, I can literally stick anything metal on the magnets, so I just use a metal pencil tray that you get when you buy a pack of pencils. I sit my brushes those and it works fine. They also had a tripod I could buy with it, but once again it was really overpriced so I just bought another tripod from a different store that works perfectly fine as well. But other than that, its a great design, its so light and portable, especially the small one. I can carry the box, tripod, paints etc and even a small seat all in one bag.

    • @RobertoDomeArt
      @RobertoDomeArt 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I too have my own tripod😄. The magnets really help in getting creative with the add-ons. I started using mine at life drawing with oils and honestly I find it such a joy to use. I'm curious about the small seat, any advice?

    • @MarkWhippy
      @MarkWhippy 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@RobertoDomeArt the seat is just a small fold up seat I got at a store that sells cheap products from China. They’re not the most comfortable but I just use it for urban sketching. I’m sure there are more fancy fold up seats from art stores you can get though. For the metal pencil tray, I sit it on the magnets at the front of the pochade box, nearest to you, rather than the ones on the sides.

      @@RobertoDomeArt thanks for your feedback. I'm not too upset about the sliding;) I really love this box with the tripod. Great size (medium), adjustable, lightweight. Expensive-ish, but it's perfect for me.

    Yes I remember the first I was a teenager. Already this feels like a different type of story lol. No but seriously your painting is far better than my first and it was a landscape. Understanding mediums in oil is something that takes time more even than cleaning up. I went from oil to watercolor. I think you will enjoy working on a gessoed surface much more its easier to move paint and make alterations. I would say just make sure to get a fairly good quality gesso or it will be a lot like latex. Good luck and your portrait looks great especially for first go in a new medium.

      Thank you! Interesting, I'm basically doing the opposite, from watercolor to oils :P, even though I love watercolor and definitely make more videos on it. I'm going to try to paint on gessoed canvas, I spent 2 days sanding and gessoing 😅. I read somewhere to use non absorbent gesso but all I could find in art shops was semi-absorbent, hope I didn't just waste money and time lol. Thanks for watching.

      I found the oil 10 times Easier than the acrylics. You got to be genius to blend with Acrylics LOL

      :D I definitely would't like to use Acrylics without a good amount of drying retarder medium :P

      I also came from the watercolors corner and the (mental) approach in oil is sooo much different and less stressful, because you know you can heal every brushstroke and tone. This might be the most important advantage for beginners. Also, the color on you palete looks almost the same on the canvas, even when fully dried. As a watercolor artist, you have to think: that's amazing! Why did I voluntarily make my life so difficult? :D

      @@masterjeffrey87 so true 😄 still there is an immediacy to watercolor I really like. How quick it can be and the beauty in seeing water and pigment flowing together. Especially for quick sketches it's unbeatable.

      @@RobertoDomeArt yes, for sktetches watercolor/gouache is unbeatable. For example finding a good composion or a light/shadow-concept of a new project. Combining all these approaches is amazing.

    Can you share what type of magnets you use for your palette and water container? Thank you 🎉

    • @RobertoDomeArt
      @RobertoDomeArt 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It's called magnetic tape. It's usually sold in stationery and office supplies shops, it comes in a roll with adhesive on one side and it's soft enough to be cut into little squares. I then stick them under the palette wells. I added an amazon link to the supplies . Hope this helps.

    I like the idea of being aware and noticing being as important as the actual creation of art. I’ve always said that the hardest part in painting is getting the color right (takes into account all the aspects of color, value etc… the stuff that bores people so I just say “color”), the rest is just technical execution, easy, for me anyway. Awareness does actually come first so good point. I take pics on my phone and have setup folders in the phone to categorize everything. I have sunset/rise, beach, trees, sky… there are many overlaps of course but I don’t worry too much. I’ve somewhere near 15,000 photos and the best ones get categorized. I’m just getting setup for a portable setup and it looks very similar so far. Watercolor and pencil.

      Yeah saying color always sounds like the fun part :P It's a good thing to take some time to categorise, especially since it's so easy to take a million photos with the current technology, I struggle in convincing myself to take time to do that ahah, I just try to have a very small SD card on the camera so I can't take too many reference photos when going around. I'm curious to know what you end up adding to your portable kit ;)
