Homemade solar Beeswax melter | Kenyan Top Bar Hive Management
มุมมอง 3.4K3 ปีที่แล้ว
If you don't know what to do with your old brood comb, how about this... Check out my homemade wax melter I made with some scrap timber from my Kenyan top bar hives, a steel tray and a sheet of glass I had lying around. I chuck the brood comb into the wax melter, leave it out in the sun, and it doesn't take long before I get a good amount of beeswax out of it. You can use the wax to wax top bar...

I build mine out of pallets, it cost me almost nothing to build. I also make them out of 200 litre plastic drums but they need a dowel hanging down in the middle of the bar because they are so wide the comb needs the extra support.
How can we improve the design to stop rats coming in and dropping their pooh in there?
I guess you could seal the roof cavity so they can’t get into it
Wow, that moment at 2:01 when he pulls out the beautifully crafted half hexagon comb is just mesmerizing! 🐝 The natural symmetry and perfection of the bees' work really shine through. Nature is incredible
Please give us the exact name of the lemongrass oil...can find the exact one... recently bought one but it didn't attract...it has ginger like fragrance
Any pure essential lemongrass oil can work. It doesn’t always attract swarms sometimes they come and sometimes not. Swarm season isn’t over so wait and see what comes. The brand im using at the moment is called NATIO
How often do you need to replace the tissue?? And do you need to redo the entrance if it rains?
I add 3 drops on the same tissue every 2 weeks. The roof of my Kenyan hive is designed to keep the rain off the body of the hive and the entrance. But if your hive has no roof then after a good rain i guess i would smear another drop around the entrance

Where did you get that particular crush. It looks really heavy duty and good quality.
Bravo
Please record yourself telling stories. I feel so soothed by your voice
The fruits look so delicious
Hey Adrian, I'm Learning a lot. I have been given top bar hives; my question is, when do you use shims? In one of your videos, you said to do a video on it, but I can't find it.
🙋👍🏻🐝Butyfol
Thanks for your comment. Im glad you enjoyed it! Long live the swarm!
Looks great. I have a TBH also. Hopefully the bees winter well I'm in Pennsylvania USA.
Kenyan Top Bar hives are fantastic! I love their simplicity and the bees are so much more relaxed.
❤ from Iran 🇮🇷
Thanks ❤
Deadly work there brother
You need a warre hive-tool!
Thanks for watching. When I first moved over from conventional Langstroth hives, I started using Warre hive’s. I found them great for the bees but after a few seasons I decided to try a Kenyan hive and that’s the direction I went in. I find them so much easier to use than the Warre hives although I still have a soft spot for them. They are great hives! I still have a few empty ones and im thinking of getting them going again this spring
@@beekeepingnaturally Thanks for the reply. It is the tool I was recommending, not the hive. It would make detaching comb from the walls much easier! I design and build my own hives. Currently I have a couple which are based on the warre, but next spring I will be trying a long-hive built out of hay bales.
Hình dạng tổ ong thật đặc biệt, ong ít quân mà mật nhiều
this is what I was looking for, thank you
Mmmm yummy
Yummy to the Kenyan Crunch!! I'm a Kenyan bee farmer, nice to see our hives are in use world wide!!
Great video! I'm a Kenyan bee farmer. Now have 52 hives. After i started using the KTBH (Kenya Top Bar Hive), i realised its much easier to handle than other hives even when it comes to inspection and harvesting. Also it gives more honey and wax and gets colonised faster than other hives.
I’m glad you enjoyed the video, it’s great to hear from commercial KTB users! Where are you located?
@@beekeepingnaturally Thank you. I am based in the Western part of Kenya called Kakamega. Started off with 5 hives a year and a half ago and now I have 52 hives. They're doing well. We have very favourable climate. My target is to have 100 hives by the end of this year. I use some of the income generated from there to help support the community.
mooi maar niet functioneel .
I am looking to see the harvest method as I switched to top bar What does the Kenyon part mean?
Do u use queen excluder on top hives?
Great video. Do you have a video showing the next stage of removing the honey from the comb, or maybe you sell some cut comb. I will be interested to see how you do it. Thanks
Aw, I hope that that one squashed bee recovered from her injuries! With as many bees as you're working with there, it's amazing that _only one_ of the bees got injured. They're all over the place! 😶
Barrel cells are the best boxes
Nice process. Yummy!!!
Thanks Nasir 😊
Do you have a video on how to make the hive?
I don’t have a video but I’m more than happy to email you my plans for free, email me at adrian@beekeepingnaturally.com.au and I’ll send them.
Such a relaxing video and calm voice! Love it! My first hive this year was a KTBH but I made enough room in the lid that I can convert to semi-cathedral type later for comb stability. I enjoyed seeing this!
Thanks for your positive comment. Curious to see your design and know more about how it works, where can i see it
@@beekeepingnaturally I don’t have any videos but I’ll try to upload some photos to Imgur and share! The lid gives two inches clearance above the bars, all around plus there is additional clearance in the middle since it slopes from a point. So I could do a shallow cathedral bar set, replacing the flat bars I have now. I used all rough sawn cedar 2x4’s so it’s pretty well insulated.
ما شاء الله تبارك الله❤❤🥰😋😋😋😋😋🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤
Really nice. Do you have any problems with the propolisation of the frames? And how is with honey harvesting, do honeycombs break?
Приветствую 😊а есть у вас побробное видео о изготовлении такого улия?

Que hermosa la naturaleza y ese tipo de colmenas al Natural que grandioso Algun Dia tendre unas de ese tipo
Im an Aussie living in Hawaii on the Big Island. A Swam nestled into an Empty top Bar Hive I have in September 2023, and I still haven't harvested any honey. They are 8 bars away from a full box. Thanks for the videos , going to see. if I can give it a go. They cross comb and it's messy
Thanks, I’m glad you like the video and it has inspired you to work your hive. Cross combing isn’t fun for anyone. All the best with it. Going forward You should try using starter strips of wax foundation.
Thanks for that tip. I'll get some.@@beekeepingnaturally
So, do you get less problems than just straight across top bars. with the hexagonal shape? It seems like the comb would be more stable is warmer weather.
Yes, the combs are more stable in the warmer months but I’m finding it more difficult to keep the bee’s from cross combing even though the bars have quite pronounced wedges for the bee’s to work on.

Where are all these beautiful honey bees getting their nectar from show me the flowers
Hi Adrian can you help me with some advice I built a top bar hive ab 800mm long and installed top bars to half with blocking end.i captured wild swarm with lemon grass etc these bees then started building comb on the floor and wall instead of the bars I am surprised how quick this has occured , what how when can I rectify this ? Thanks
Good job. From lao
This video delicious for sure, congrats! In order to produce that much honey do you have to feed the bees extra or is only natural from flowers?? But, If you do feed how often and what food please? Thank you a lot.
Thanks for your comment. I never feed my bees anything other than their own honey if they need it. That honey was produced by local flowers. In certain years there is an abundance of flowering plants producing lots of nectar.
@@beekeepingnaturally That's encouraging to hear cause everybody in Greece Europe feeds for winter with sugar water in the hive and sugar paste with pollen, enzymes and aminos saying " the bees dont make it through winter if you dont feed." And during November using "oxalic acid" to kill vorroa mites otherwise saying "bees again die." While others sprey more natural with "garyfallo herb". But I just bought two hives and I want try do everything as natural as possible. Thank you a lot. Georgios P.s In Ancient Greece were giving dry figs in periods that bees did not have much supplies, I believe some fruit want be bad.
Good job from lao
