Training concepts in the forms opening movement.
Throughout Taiji there are opportunities to train our body method, to understand what is happening and why. There are also equally as many opportunities to avoid that same training.
Here Coach shows an example of how something as simple as raising and lowering the arms in the forms opening motions can contain keys to the whole of Taiji's movement dynamics.

Tai Chi Application - Understanding failure & continuing your attacks.
มุมมอง 7292 ปีที่แล้ว
We see so many applications of Tai Chi where after one or two movements the exchange stops. This is a mistake and builds bad habits. I can say from both my time as a nightclub doorman, and from engaging in years of combat sport, that the first attack is rarely the fight ender! This doesn't mean that we should abandon the ideal of trying to end the fight as quickly as possible - just that we sho...
TCA - Drill to find and feel the off balance line
มุมมอง 8082 ปีที่แล้ว
Many martial arts understand and work with the off balance line. In Japanese Martial Arts like Judo or Aikido this line forms part of the methodology is called Kuzushi. In Taiji we also have to be very aware of this off balance line and how to effectively identify and use it. This simple drill from the Tai Chi Academy Combat Module is one that you can try to improve your sensitivity to the off ...
Peng as Structure
มุมมอง 7K3 ปีที่แล้ว
In this video we look at how utilizing 'Peng' in our structure can lead to the error of 'forming up' behind the point of contact. This can in turn make us vulnerable to the opponent as areas not involved in the path to the ground 'empty'. Video Taken from TCA Combat Module Course 6 - The 8 Powers. Tai Chi Academy - head movement
มุมมอง 1.6K3 ปีที่แล้ว
One of the most common faults I see in Tai chi exponents training to fight is the 'static head' and an over reliance on their ability to capture and check with their arms. In the Tai Chi Academy Combat Module - Course 4 - Basic Fighting Skills - we look at drills to help us to get out of this habit while still retaining the Tai Chi Body skill. The Tai Chi Combat Module is launching 1st June 202...
Applying Tai Chi - The mechanics behind 'Lu'

'Lu', often described as 'roll back' is the primary 'yin' power of Tai Chi. But what does that mean? How can a 'yin' method be a power? In this video we look at the mechanics of 'Lu' and how these concepts permeate the methods which utilize Lu. Everyone wants to be authoritative on the internet. This is Peng as taught in multiple lineages, it is Peng as seen in multiple internal masters I have met and trained with. I can make this work for health, fighting, everything that so few Taiji people can express and even fewer can demonstrate on anything but compliant students. So ultimately, 'guy on the internet' I will take their word, my understanding and my training over yours. You are very welcome any time to come and test it.

    do not lean into your partner when doing any of this stuff... ain't gonna work like that

    • @thetaichiacademy6079
      @thetaichiacademy6079 ปีที่แล้ว

      Without exception every major Taiji exponent of the last 100 years leaned during the application of their art - from every style of Taiji - Chen, Yang, wu, Sun, Hao. The old yang style of people like Yang Ban Hou has a pronounced lean in all form movements as do many of its offshoots. To be completely upright is a major error and a myth spread by people who cannot fight with Taiji - often the same people would then 'lean' whenever they showed applications at fighting pace. It would be correct to say not to lean 'onto' your partner, as in give them your mass or weight. But that is not present in this video and I explicitly say to avoid it.

    An interesting take and explanation on remaining relaxed yet rooted and why it is important for good Tai Chi Chuan push-hands, redirection, and fighting development. We are taught if I feel his tension building it is also partly my own fault for if I truly yielded, sensed, followed, and stayed relaxed there would be nothing for them to push against. That is the point where you have already felt their tension starting to build and already flowed around it by reading where it wants to go. Your description shows yet another way of learning to sense this by exercising it to more of an extreme I Like it.

    This is very basic Zhan zhuang training. Early lessons but with feet parallel and much more force from all angles then later on the side and on one leg. This is needed before starting taichi and is the traditional way so then you have the taichi body.

    Peng translated as ward off is very limiting. It limits it to being a posture instead of a power.

    • @thetaichiacademy6079
      @thetaichiacademy6079 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Only if you think of warding something off as some type of posture. What is the 'type' of power you would use to ward something off, no matter where contact occurred on your body? Ward off is an excellent term for describing the Jin of Peng IMO.

    • @davidwackett9375
      @davidwackett9375 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@thetaichiacademy6079 sorry I should have added "in my opinion" to my comment, i trained in Yang style 30 odd years ago, they seemed to Peng as ward off, training again and again use of the arm to repel someone pushing against it, when I changed to the style from the Cheng Tin hung lineage Peng / Pang is the use of force in an upward direction, Lu is the use of force in a sideways direction etc.... I found this a better use of the eight powers, but of course that is just my opinion.

    • @thetaichiacademy6079
      @thetaichiacademy6079 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@davidwackett9375 Ah yes, that type of thought about Peng - 'warding someone off with the arm' isnt how I would teach it either :) Peng has 2 aspects 'structural' and ' directional'. Firstly, Peng is essentially the structural component of the Tai Chi body. It is the 'expansion' concept, the opening of the joints etc. When this expansion interacts with the Earth (heaven Earth Man model) we get the directional aspect ' up and out'. Thank you for taking the time to clarify your thoughts. Happy training.

      That's because you are only 阴, you should focus at least a part of your body, a join for instance, toward the other guy center, in order to have some 阳 in the process. I'm not a master, so I cannot say that I have the perfect answer, but I hope it can help. Have a good training !

      If someone is good at punching, a MuayThai or Western boxing adept, it will be VERY hard to stick to the punch. You would have to move to 'clinch' range, which both styles also have, and work from there.... and pray they dont punch you unconscious on the way in. This video is not fighting though, this is adding specific skills to a training method called TuiShou.

In return, the ground will push your feet upward to help you stabilize, according Newton's law of the equal and opposite reaction. Thank you for sharing the meaning of Song. Relaxation is power.
