The airfields of Okikanawa were intentionally forsaken by the Japanese army in Okinawa. Tokyo did not admit the airfields in the hands of the US. Later, the Okinawa army was forced to take them back in disastrous vain.

Fascinating, thank you. The boats shown at 6:50 are the 'Shinyo' suicide boats designed to ram allied ships I spent some time living on Amami Oshima and Kikai Jima and sailed on a small boat to Tokuno Jima. The Ryukyu Islands are a very interesting part of Japan and well worth a visit.

-My Father was there when this film was taken, he served on Saipan-Tinian-Guam as a 1st Lt. in the USA Medical Corps. He came home in 1946 after a stint at Camp Atterbury commanding German and Italian POWs there.

Great, I don't see alot of variety shown of Pacific AAF planes, except maybe P-38 and B-25. Mostly Navy stuff. Glad the jugs was tearing up stuff like they were known to do.

Seizing the Marianas (which included Saipan) was of major strategic importance for the U.S. The islands, though remotely situated in the Pacific, were nevertheless close enough to mainland Japan to allow American B-29s to strike most areas in the Japanese home islands and return without refueling. Tinian, another island in the Marianas, would ultimately be the island from which the atomic bombing missions against Hiroshima and Nagasaki were flown.

Surprising to see P-47s. Saipan would eventually become a base for the B-29.
