Regenerating the Amazon with Food Forests
This episode we head deep into the Amazon jungle to see how Shipibo elders from the Chaikuni institute are regenerating deforested sites with permaculture food forests!
I have founded "The Living Classroom" to teach kids permaculture in schools. That is my primary focus for the time being. I will at some point find the time to provide updates of my own progress at Lulu's Perch - visits from Geoff Lawton, Food forests, Swale systems, the whole kit and kaboodle :)

    Vetiver should have been Geoff Lawton first choice to plant behind a dam wall. It was mentioned in the Bill Mollison’s Permaculture Design Manual for slope stabilization. Vetiver is much easier to manipulate than clumping bamboo. All you would need is a sickle whereas with bamboo you would need a machete or pruning saw, and much more human effort. With bamboo , it would take years to to produce above surface yields. However, with Vetiver one would have above surface yields within the first season. Some yields are: fodder, mulch, substrate for mushrooms, biomethane production, and the effluent from the biodigester would be feed for vermiculture. Were I a Peruvian, I would feed the Vetiver to Guinea Pigs because in Peru they are a delicacy. The feces and viscera from the slaughtered Guinea Pigs would be fed back to the biodigester.

    0:32 - Compost does not protect the environment since it produce methane and carbon dioxide during the decompose process. Unless it was buried deep enough underground.

    • @lulusperch1742
      @lulusperch1742 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your comment! Methane and carbon dioxide are normal emissions from biological decomposition and exist within the natural methane and carbon dioxide cycle. Every forest floor decomposes and emits gases just like every forest absorbs and transforms those gases back into biomass. So to say that compost does not protect the environment because of the miniscule amount of gas it produce may be an overstatement. If anything your concern begs the question: how do we capture and store that small amount of methane for future use e.g. cooking gas. Then we can discuss ideas around bio-digestors and compost bladders! Cheers

    If you can, always carry a hardwood block, about two inches thick and 12 inches by 12 inches, and place it under the jack to stop the jack from sinking in the ground if the ground is soggy, what happens is once the jack makes a hard contact with the chassis, every stroke will make the jack sink and it won't lift your vehicle but it will sink the jack, lol

    Does this mean that it's possible that we are just in a very long natural cycle when we see certain species of trees dye off in certain areas? For example chestnut in Eastern usa and Dutch Elms in the UK? Could they come back in 100 years or so?

    Need to do what they did in Al Baydha, rock walls to slow down the flows aka gabions, swales and all those and that area will bounce back quickly. I also think using a network of large and medium sized rocks will not only slow down the water but keep the sun off it so it can sink in easier.

    • @lulusperch1742
      @lulusperch1742 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good question! My suggestion is don't dig down but build upwards. By that I mean placing rock gabions, fallen logs and sticks along the contour. Reinforce this with deep rooted clumping grasses like vetiver too

    • @thecontonemethod1582
      @thecontonemethod1582 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@lulusperch1742 Cool man, thanks. Since I messaged you an idea came to mind: using a walking two-wheeled tractor plough; one could deflate the hillside tyre to help to dig into the slope and the mouldboard of the plough would fold the sod over downhill to create the berm. 2-3 runs, to create a square foot swale. What you reckon?!

    • @lulusperch1742
      @lulusperch1742 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@thecontonemethod1582 If you've got a machine with a low center of gravity on a steep slope I say give it a try. Although a swale and berm may be redundant on a 1:2 slope, you may only need to rip on contour with a Yeomans plough. Have a look into PA Yeoman, he would rip ploughlines from valleys slightly off contour down to the ridges.

    • @lulusperch1742
