Both inside, it’s where the balls hit from not from when the swing begins or the ball begins
@thomasw7305 absolutely, but I have had plenty of umpires who got this wrong in matches. It’s hard to spot in real time with no replay though.
Hitting the crossbar in overtime in hockey
@@noxyFN2 nooooo, nightmare 🤣
number two because you kept your head up and could have eliminated a player easily. Not number one because you stop the ball which gives the defender more time to react and its not number 3 because all the way through the movement your head is down which is self explanitory
@@martinashley7841 absolutely spot on. We have to keep ourselves and the ball moving as much as we can. Eyes up when possible.
Both inside?
Bang on. Most people assume the second one isn’t because the starts outside the circle. You would make a very good umpire. 🔥
@@stickwisehockey haha I think I’ll stick to drag flicking 😂
@Bennnzzz13 I assume you’ve watched both of my drag flick videos?
@ absolutely 👍
men playing field hockey😭😭😭
@LucasLeamon by far not the most original comment I’ve heard before. I sort of understood when I was 10 years old in the 80’s from fellow 10 year olds. Still can’t believe in this day and age this boring old insult is being thrown about. Such a shame.
@@stickwisehockeybeing thrown about such a shame🤓 looks like field hockey gave you a side of estrogen too😭
No to hi
@dylandolstra7384 it should be disallowed, but not because it’s too high though 🤔
Yes
@@mamukaxubua why do you say yes? Why should it be disallowed?

@@nancylandry8683 if he was this good to do this on purpose he would be an Olympic champion 🤣
At the top level I rarely see centre backs using push passes for distribution and it is almost always slaps. I always preferred push passing in general since I always been able to generate power (sometimes even more than slapping). Would I ever need to transition from slapping from push passing to be able to reach a higher level even though pushing has always been more successful for me?
This is a great drill. Thanks 🙌🏼
@@CurlingAndrew thank you Andrew. Was there anything in particular that really hit home?
Really helpful drill. Thanks!
@@ae5786 thank you so much. Anything in particular helpful? More videos coming, any suggestions always welcome.
The most helpful part of the tutorial is demonstrating both the right way and wrong way to execute the drill. It’s just so important to know both what to do and what not to do! I really struggle with elimination skills and so I’d love to see fundamental elimination skills I can use in game (more advanced, highly technical skills look great, but aren’t as useful at my level). Shout out to the production team for a very polished and professional video without distracting music and edits. Great content presented expertly …..Well done!👍🙏👍
@@ae5786 thank you so much. I did this whole thing purely on my own. I cringe when I hear how monotone I am, I’m normally talking to people and it’s easy to be charismatic and energetic to actual people. Feels funny trying to energise a camera. More videos coming, more often now! Thank you so much again 🙌
@@stickwisehockey a professional voice coach once told me that most people, including professional singers/actors/public speakers, cringe when hearing their own recorded voice, it’s a near universal human emotion. To my ear, your tone is measured and authoritative… Exactly what I want to hear on an online tutorial! Also keep in mind that your delivery is much more intelligible to non-native English speakers. Don’t change a thing, mate!👍
@ absolutely, but I have to try and believe I’m talking to a group of players and just have a bit more tone and energy. The one voice over I did in this was dull 😂
You have no idea how timely this video is! I had a complete stinker yesterday. Just couldn't seem to get anything right. Without a doubt, footwork was the main reason, exacerbated by poor fitness after injury and illness. Ordered some cones and have been looking for exercises I can do outside of training to work on those things. This one's exactly what I need to get those feet moving and stop what I call the 'body-stick separation', where the stick and feet aren't coordinated and you end up leaving the ball behind. This, and a bunch exercises from your shorts, I've got a lot of work ahead! Anything I can do in a small-ish space at home?
@@dutypaidrock that will be my task for the week ahead now. Drills you can do inside. I’ll post towards the end of the week 😎 Don’t forget to share this video 🤩
I get the game has evolved and new skills have become mainstream, but I find too often players attempting ridiculous things like cross-field tomahawk passes before they've mastered a basic push pass. I'd love to get more data into hockey. Think in % chance of success, and always pick the option with the highest. Watch international hockey and they still do the basics 90% of the time; they've just got a greater chance of pulling off difficult skills when they need them.
This is such a brilliant comment. I’ve played at the highest level and coached at a high level, I bang on about basics more than anything else. 1st touch, push pass, basic ball carrying. Add defending as well obviously. If you can do this to a high level you can play premier league or international. You don’t have to have the extras.
@@stickwisehockey Your last sentence really resonates actually. I've got my first training session tonight with the 1st team, and I'm finding myself being concerned with not being able to reliably throw a 50 yard aerial or beat 3 players with fancy elimination moves. What I REALLY need to do tonight is nail those basics you mention.
@ if you smash your 1st touch, everything else is so easy. Make sure you know what you’re doing before you get the ball 🤩
@@stickwisehockey took your advice... had a great session. Best I've played all season, and told I didn't look out of place at all. Buzzing!
@@dutypaidrock that’s amazing to hear, make sure you tell your friends what we do here and give us a quick follow over on Instagram if you can 👌
2. It can eliminate a player in a single move, and you're using the momentum of the ball. 1 introduces the opportunity of a mis-control, the ball is stationary for a moment inviting a jab tackle, and the footwork is necessarily more static. Three is similar but the head's down, meaning you could run straight onto a defender's stick, miss a good pass etc...
@@dutypaidrock awesome comments, thank you so much. Who do you play for?
@@stickwisehockey Thanks! Currently with Maidstone HC. I've been out of the game for 12 years, just coming back this season. Before that I was at Hampstead & Westminster.

@ I moved out of London and just never found a new club. Got seriously into road cycling and didn't have time for both. Really enjoying being back though - I burned out on cycling last year and needed to do something different in the winter.

@@stickwisehockey no why am I getting tag teamed PUSSIES
I'm guessing 2, as I guess that would be back of the stick but I might be wrong 🤷♂️
Internationally both of these have been allowed and are fine. But would umpires lower down allow them?
@stickwisehockey I don't know maybe I'll ask an umpire this Saturday
@ would be interesting to find out their thoughts. Let me know what they say.
No an umpire down lower wouldn’t allow it. Many umpires where I play consider any part of the grip as back stick as it’s hard to tell where the back stick starts and ends so they just call it back stick regardless.
1 ok as front of the stick. 2 is back stick FHD.
Do you find it harder than usual to do a flat along the ground slap pass/sweep with the ritual specialist
@@Peace0ut32 hi and thank you for you comment. I don’t find it harder to do this with my specialist. The old style where the groove went all the way along I found it harder. Is that what you’re using?
@@stickwisehockey na I went from the velocity to the newest style specialist recently
That’s not even hockey that’s just playing with a branch😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Its field hockey
They call it hockey but the real hockey is ice hockey not field hockey
@@perunakamuja Field hockey's origins can be traced back to ancient Egypt, Persia, and Greece, while ice hockey's modern rules were established in 1875. So field hockey is clearly the "real" hockey.
@JillFerguson you didn’t mention the ball?
@@perunakamuja why is ice hockey the “real” hockey? Field hockey has a significantly longer history and larger player base. Ice hockey only came hundreds of years later. Outside of the US and Canada, ice hockey is a very small sport compared to field hockey. I only even have to call this field hockey in USA or Canada.
6. I put 3d skills into it
I wish it snowed here 😢
Its not intentionally causing danger if its under control you can lift its anywhere on the pitch. People use the handle of the stick to bunt on short corners so this is no different. Legal.
@@robertplayford5574 absolutely agree, I wouldn’t do this in a game, but I love the debate that unusual situations create 🤩
Illegal. It’s in the D and intentionally causing danger. If there is no one else in the D as a ref I would still call it illegal as you are using the back of the grip. Some refs call it backstick regardless of where it hits your grip so imo illegal.
Illegal
@@FFT2013 What makes this illegal for you. It’s really split opinions on our Instagram channel @stickwise
Aren’t you not allowed to volley intentionally
And it’s back stick

Useful technique. I like the use of deflectors. Blocking the keepers view makes the keeper focus more on the movement of the ball and improves the ability to trust reflex and instincts when the ball is in motion. I like the idea of practicing the flick with double defenders that way you’re prepared either way if it’s a single defender or two.
totally, the attack has the advantage as we can dictate what we do and the defence has to react. Let me know how you get on and don't be afraid to contact me with any questions you might have.

Great video. Love your guys content. Typically a forward but has had to switch to keeping to enable my age group to play youth hockey and now looking like it’s my new position😂. @stickwisehockey I did watch it and found it a useful refresher of the basics of drag flicking. And an encouragement that anyone should have a go and keep practicing. Defending the deflected shot is the most difficult.
@@brianlane3266 Absoloutely, as the corner attack you have the advantage as you are in control of what you do, the other team has to react. Deflections are so hard to defend as they happen so quickly.
