    How about Iowa against 5x direct hit by Fritz-X ?

  • @StuartKoehl
    @StuartKoehl 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Neither ship would ever have closed the range to that extent. Each would try to remain within its zone of immunity, meaning the Iowa would have used its speed advantage to maintain a range of 20-25 km, and its superior fire control system to hit early and often. Ballistically, the 16-in/50 gun firing the 2700-lb Mk.7 AP round was superior to the Yamato's 18.1-inch round, meaning it had a good chance of penetrating Yamato's deck armor at long range. But even if it did not, such hits would wreck her topsides and rapidly disable Yamato's rangefinders and directors. At a range of 20-25 km, Iowa would be capable of a first-salvo hit, even at night; and could expect to score about 10% hits over time. Yamato, in contrast, with much more primitive radar fire controls, would be lucky to score 2-3% hits. But if each ship closed rapidly to within 10 km, most rounds would hit and likely penetrate the belt, which would have been rapidly disabling for both of them.

      The U.S. Navy regarded long range for capital ship engagements in this time frame as 20,000- 25,000 yards. The fire control system based on the Mark 8 was marginally superior in range accuracy to the foretop optics and the Type 22 Mod 4 radar of the Yamato class (35- 40 yds. vs. 89 yds. and 109 yds. respectively). These systems only ranged on where the firing ship wanted the main battery shells to land. Where they would actually land depended on shell dispersion, which radar could not control. The pitching and rolling of the firing vessel, the rigidity of the vessel, the proximity of the guns to one another in their turret, and the time that the shells actually left the barrels were all factors, to name just a few). The dispersion factor of the Iowa class was 1.9% of range for a nine- gun salvo vs. 1.3% for a nine- gun salvo for the Yamato class. This more than offset the range accuracy of the Iowa class. Historical performance bears this out. None of the Iowa= class BBs registered a main battery hit on any vessel of destroyer size or larger during WW2, while Yamato registered 4 first salvo hits on two different vessels at over 20,000 yards off Samar- one of which was directed by radar only. The real advantage conferred by the U.S. Navy's Mark 8 Radar Range Keeper was remote power control- which enabled the radar to directly control the main battery in both range and bearing in all visibility conditions. However, the U.S. Navy never developed specific tactics to take advantage of this asset during WW2.

    Yamato would have, at minimum, faced Iowa and New Jersey. As well as their escorts. The navy never intended for just one Iowa to confront Yamato. We’ve always preferred overwhelming firepower.

  • @josephprice4095

    Captain of the Iowa came out very aggressive, the captain of the Bismark tried to play a defensive battle, tried too much maneuver and it didn't help him. Even still, the Bismark too a f*$king pounding! When the Iowa got in close, the Bismark just didn't have enough secondary guns to hold the Iowa off at distance. Had she had more secondaries, the Iowa would have been kept at an arm's length. And still in her badly wounded state made it a good fight. Had the Bismark come out more aggressively, or more elusively by maybe jamming full throttle to the south of the map and try to come in behind Iowa where he firepower can be overmatched, he would have had better results. But a great fight nonetheless!

    16” heavy shell, much faster speed by over 10 knots, with state of the art radar vs a 12” main gun. Conqueror couldn’t escape, outshoot, or even close within range unless Iowa allowed it…

  • @henryblanton6992
    @henryblanton6992 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    The Iowa class has a firing rate of 2 rounds per minute, her optics are very good plus fire control is backed up with Radar that has strong structures that can handle the shock from muzzle blasts of her 16” Rifles. The Bismarck’s designed rate of fire was 2.25 rounds per minute; during her work ups during sea trials her Gunners working their 15” Rifles brought their rate of fire to 3 rounds per minute. I suspect that was contributing factor to the sinking of HMS Hood. Her optics were excellent which would have given her a slight advantage during daylight hours. She had radar which was weak in both signal strength with terrible radar antenna structure. During the day the Bismarck should have the advantage. At night, with it’s stronger radar both in signal and structural strengths it should have the advantage. Later in the War though, at night they would more or less be equal.

    • @chloekaftan
      @chloekaftan 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      the yamato player was intentionally throwing the match, everyone knows that there is no point in stern tanking against an iowa when an iowa can outpace yamato's 27 knots with its 33 knots, yamato's strength is in bow tanking while getting Turrets # 1 & 2 to bear against a fast approaching battleship, while delicately steering to angle iowa's shells into bouncing off yamato's insanely thick armor to prevent a lucky (or skillful depending on the captain) hit on the infamous "yammy cheek". 9 times out of 10 matches i always beat an iowa in any engagement range, especially a ridiculous throw-away blitzkrieg attack that this iowa was pushing for. iowa is a battlecruiser (not a battleship) designed with an "All-or-Nothing" armor layout, building most of its armor around its barbettes, turrets, and citadel, while leaving the rest of the ship virtually unprotected, which makes getting overmatched by 460mm shells a walk in the park for any skilled yamato player.

Iowa class battleships were paper mache battleships, which is why the were able to perform the otherwise unrealistic feat of 33 knots, they were built with an "All-or-Nothing" armor layout that sacrificed armor across the majority of the ship with the exception of the barbettes, turrets, and citadel, in favor of speed. as opposed to most other nations favoring a turtleback armor scheme for battleships of similar tonnage, iowa and her sisters were never designed to fire all 9 - 410mm cannons at once, which likely contributed to the # 2 Turret Explosion of USS Iowa (BB-61) in April 19, 1989.
