Tangerine Dream Top 10 - #1 Tangram (piano version)
Tangram (1980)
As may not come entirely as a surprise, Tangram, the first album featuring the trio Franke, Froese and Schmoelling, is my personal favourite.
Strangely enough, this masterpiece is hardly mentioned in Edgar’s autobiography. Wikipedia says the following: “At a turning point between two eras, Tangram contains fond glimpses back at the "classic long-form sequencer" period and also contains foreshadows of the "new age melodic short track" period to come.”
Tangram is a perfect blend of everything that makes TD unique: evocative rhythms and sequences, skilfully crafted ornaments and improvisations. While the whole album is a true piece of art, no other composition by Tangerine Dream has affected me emotionally like the first few minutes of Set 2, before the sequencers kick in.
Thanks a lot for joining me on this journey. See you again soon.

Tangerine Dream Top 10 - #2 Charly The Kid (piano version)
มุมมอง 1Kปีที่แล้ว
“It sounds so distant” These few words, written by somebody on TH-cam, are a perfect and poetic description of Charly The Kid. As Edgar himself says in his autobiography, the music to Firestarter “…was a refreshingly unconventional soundtrack which contained many moments in sound that had never been heard in a Hollywood movie before”. I completely agree. With Firestarter, TD accomplished someth...

Horizon and the concerts in Poland When listening to the awesome live album Poland from 1983, it is surprising to learn that TD’s tour around this country was a near disaster. The project of a winter trip to eastern Europe was proposed to the group by a representative of an English agency that Edgar hadn’t met before. Having discussed the matter with various contacts within the business, Edgar ...

Church Theme / Silver scale Edgar’s autobiography doesn’t mention this track nor the production of the soundtrack to the movie Wavelength from 1983. Church Theme, included in the soundtrack, is a shortened and remixed version of Silver Scale, a track performed live during European tours in 1980 and 1981, but not released by that name until 1994 on the compilation album Tangents. Church Theme en...

Logos Logos Live from 1982, recorded in the Dominion Theatre in London, is a really awesome concert and another great release by the trio Froese, Franke and Schmoelling. Together with Poland, it is the best TD live recording that I know of. Optical Race and yet another line-up Optical Race was the first album I bought by Tangerine Dream. I was in my teens and it totally blew me away. Incidentally, in those days, I happened to fool around with a basic synth/keyboard, recordi...
Tangerine Dream top 10 - #7 Exit (piano version)

Exit and the soundtrack to Risky Business While there are other notable tunes on Exit (1981), like Choronzon and the atmospheric Remote Viewing, the title track stands out as TD’s most badass composition. It has a very dark and sinister feel to it and it certainly deserved far better fate than to be included in the teenage comedy Risky Business. I think it brings to mind the minimalist composit...

Enter Johnny Following the departure of Peter Baumann and the less than satisfactory collaboration with Steve Joliffe (at least according to Edgar), TD was once again on the look-out for a third member. Force Majeure and the year 1978 1978 was an eventful as well as frustrating year for Edgar Froese. As Peter Baumann had recently left the group, Edgar was on the look-out for new musicians. Edgar considered Klaus to be an excellent, but somewhat eccentric, musician. He...

Monolight and the creation of Stratosfear My number 10 is part of the track Monolight from the album Encore, which consists of recordings from Tangerine Dream’s 1977 U.S. tour. It is one of the band’s first attempts at creating more melodic and less esoteric material. The tour followed the release of Stratosfear in 1976 and Monolight resembles “The Big Sleep in Search of Hades” from that album....

Listening to your unbelievably good interpretations, I just realized how many good piano melodies were already there with Cool At Heart being one of the last examples. They were not that frequent since the departure of Haslinger. Speaking of which... You wrote somewhere on your videos (I think that was Sun Gate) that he left to pursue his solo career, which was the official statement as well. But I think having three Froeses (Edgar, Jerome and Monica) could be too much for him 😀

@@jacekmaek583 thanks! While Monica was a great support for Edgar during the 70' and 80', Edgar's almost immediate hook-up with Bianca Froese after Monica's death seemed to have caused Jerome to break contact with his father (according to the biography). From my own listening experience, Jerome did a great job with the remixes, but the Froese×2 duo produced some pretty mediocre mudic, like the Rockoon album. So the Froese family dynamic was a bit complex...

Worth mentioning is the fact that Jerzy Kordowicz's announcement (famous Polish Radio DJ at that time) at the beginning of the album was in fact recorded in Wroclaw. That's in line in other TD's concert albums (up to 1993 I guess) which do not represent what they actually played live on a specific concert (vide side A of Ricochet and side A of Livemiles). Listening to your interpretation which is beautiful btw, I cannot stop hearing the sequencer playing along the melody in my head. The guys did few years ago a reinterpretation of this track (I think hats off to Ulrich Schnauss) on their Recurring Dreams album. Quite an achievement considering that the old instruments are not longer available.

  • @jacekmaek583

The cover is really beautiful. Nice job. It was also the first one I bought myself. Although my father had already Poland, Phaedra, Rybycon, Ricochet, Cyclone and Force Majeure in his collection, so I knew them as well. I also like the same tracks from the album: Marakash, Mothers of Rain and Sungate. I'd maybe add Ghazal to that as well. The Melrose years are often underestimated, but I'm one of the few who likes all the incarnations of the band and the albums. Maybe the exception would be Paradiso and the presence on stage of Mrs tambourine Camaa.

@@TheLuxardens I don't know. Unfortunately, Edgar's autobiography seldom mentions any individual tracks, nor the group's composition methods. Instead, it focuses on their extensive touring as well as political and philosophical matters. That being said, my impression is that Edgar was foremost a visionary and a hardworking project manager. As for the purely musical and melodical aspects of the group, I believe Schmoelling and Franke were more gifted. I base this assumption partly on the autobiography and partly on Edgar's solo works, which I am moderately impressed with. I might be entirely wrong on this point though, as Edgar indicates that he composed the Firestarter soundtrack all by himself.
