Trailer Surge Break By-Pass
This video shows you how you can electrically and mechanically bypass surge brakes when reversing if the electrical power is not available from the vehicle. Be sure to always remove any lock out devices and connect the trailer plug properly before travelling. Otherwise, you will have no brakes!

this feature annoys the crap out of me. My trailer has that lockout piece on a tether to pop it in to disable the surge brakes. Even with it it, it still pumps the brakes....
What do you mean by "can't back up"? The common problem of backing a surge brake where the brakes are preventing rearward movement because the master cylinder is being compressed? These are hydraulic surge breaks. The hydraulics work regardless of how the electrics are connected. The only applicable advice here is the slide block idea to prevent master cylinder compression.
In the type of system shown, there is a by pass solenoid that allows the master cylinder to be bypassed when activated by the reverse lights. The video is intended to provide a solution when the solenoid has failed or there is no current from the reverse wiring such as a blown fuse. There is no reason for this solution when everything is working properly.
and why would you need to bypass anything if it were "working properly"?? If it were working properly, the trailer brakes should never lock up preventing you from reversing, e.g. boat ramps etc. @@boatinsc
