Barbel Days And Ways, Volume One, Episode Two

Alan Henshaw is probably the man who has led to the capture of more barbel than any other. Here he describes some of the amazing work he and his team carry out at Calverton Fish Farm and for good measure we get a look at Lee Swords attacking the River Trent's barbel.

August And Everything Else

A compilation of forgotten angling clips I discovered while clearing out my hard drive. They're laid over a couple of Counting Crows tracks from the classic album August And Everything After. The Crows released a live album back in Nov 2013, Echoes of the Outlaw Roadshow. Great band, great music and a few nice fish as well. Enjoy.
Great filming and footage I have your set of dvds brilliant keepsake 🎣🐟👍
Brilliant video mate. Would love to see you do some more in the future
Thank you for those kind words. DVDs produced to the a standard we did are simply not viable unless they are produced by manufacturers. No-one is willing to pay for content these days so you spend months creating a quality product and go broke, sadly.
@bobrobertsangling8208 Really sorry to hear that Bob. There's nobody out there that has your passion, knowledge and enthusiasm. Also when you and Stuart made barbel days and ways it was way before it's time with regards the things you tested. You set the trend and Korda followed you two and now others are following them. Thanks for the work regards The Trent Giude too mate. Absolutely fantastic that you've open sourced all that info!
You tube is good , but it has killed the dvd market for this type of dvd, Iv got your dvds,, and even videos, and have learnt a lot from you and put it to use in my fishing, and living in Doncaster, Iv got plenty of good places to put them all into practice, keep posting on here, you are never to old to learn or give advice, Kenny
Did I miss the Yorkshire curry specialist Lee Swords bit or is it coming later ?
On its way next
Witham?
NO. Further North.
I'm only doing small rivers next year. I can't wait. Love them.
What a lovely river to fish for Barbel. The underwater filming was great to see.
Really enjoying rewatching these videos, thanks for uploading them!! 👏👏👍🏻🎣
Gutted they never got underwater footage on some prolific Trent swims 😢
I agree, that would have been fantastic but it has to borne in mind the safety implications and the limits of our technology. We used camcorders to film. A plastic scuba diving camera was all we had to protect the camera. We used to lower the housing by hand which limited the depth we could work in. For deeper water we used a pole to lower the camera which was static. No way could we scan left or right or alter the angle if the housing was sat on a stone. Indeed we didn't have any monitors. All we could do was try to get the camera level, in the right place and feed the fish up to it. Then it was a case of casting a rig onto the exact spot required. Positioning the camera and placing the rig accurately was actually harder than catching the fish. Of course, if you have a budget that runs to pro-cameramen and scuba divers, I guess it is pretty simple.
Would you still recommend the polarized sunglasses bob. Thanks
I have used Optilabs glasses for over 30 years now and have had no reason to consider using any other brand. Simply the best.
@bobrobertsangling8208 thankyou. I know what I'm buying the Mrs for Christmas now 😉
Loving it. Just subbed to the channel for more of this 😊
I remember a session I had 15 barbel fishing double caster on the Trent using this method , a proper red letter day , it's never happened since after lots of trying at least not to that extent 😊
Laying on for big uns my favourite style of fishing and on the centerpin beautiful 😁👍
Brilliant video , do miss fishing the Trent. Thanks Bob brought back a few memories.
IN A KINDA WAY ALL THOSE BARBELS ARE THE SAME‼️🥱🥱🥱 THAT'S ABSOLUTELY DIFFERENT WITH CARP‼️♥️
True carp are all the same. Go back fat enough and you will find they were all commons. Leather carp were selectively bred from commons to make food preparation easier (scraping the scales). Mirrors are defective leathers so basically are defective carp. True species, roach, chub, bream, barbel, perch, pike, zander, dace, minnows, stickleback, etc are all pure species. It is carp that are the faulty interlopers.
These barbel dvds were big back in the day i learned a lot and back then there wasn’t much under water stuff going on you did a good job you an Stu 👍
It's fair to say they were ground-breaking.
@@bobrobertsangling8208 it was son 👍
Got a signed copy off Bob and Stu gutted I lost them in a house move 😢 thanks for uploading ❤
Bob Roberts, Angling abilite and journalism second to none, tells it as it is. Since this video was made, hundreds have followed, How many have said "if you care about Barbell ( or any fish for that matter)? just weight the ones that are special to you". None I know of. The words of a true angler, Fish welfare first.
Thank you for those kind words. They were such a pleasure to work on and created on the tightest budget imaginable. We needed to sell just 79 copies to break even on volume one yet there was talk at the time of, if we don't break even there won't be a second volume.
@bobrobertsangling8208 So greatfull you did, Your approach has changed my angling for many years now, and your blog is still a mind of information. If anyone has not seen it, you're missing out.
Great memories, fished the Dove extensively 2000-2010. Un fortunately saw the steady decline, very few barbel left now thanks to our furry friends, the otters. Recognised a lot of those swims, been back recently just to have a walk, looks completely different nowadays due to the big floods. Really miss "proper" barbel fishing-having to make do with "carbelling" on the Trent nowadays
Anglers really need to grasp how rapidly things change in angling. Never take what you have for granted. The Dove being a prime example. Smaller the river, faster the change.
Got the full set great series, eye opening underwater footage, i watch the set every christmas along with wilson, hayes and tel hope he does another christmas blog, got bobs new book on order ile bet theres a few things i can learn about the trent owta this book👍
What a great way to escape at Christmas.
This is the second film in a series scheduled to run for around 40 episodes in the coming months. All are free to view. I would really appreciate it if you would click on follow me.
Fantastic film!
Thank you. Another will be released next week.
Donny Bob 😊 last time I saw you was walking the track at immingham
My my, that was a very long time ago. Hope you are well and perhaps catching a few.
25+ years I would imagine..very well thanks had 6 barbel from the trent the other week 👍
I gave up working on the Railway on June 16th, 2008. I had done multiple managerial roles across the network in my final years with an area ranging from Kings Cross to the Sottish borders. Funnily enough I bumped into John Grantham this summer during a sunny trip to Cleethorpes.
Lol june 16th😂
It was no accident that's for sure.
Great film Bob. Had my first ever trip to the Trent the other day, I just sat there thinking I want to float fish this 😊
There is so much more to the Trent than carbelling, so many species to target
A long awaited video in my opinion bob and what a cracker , do you reckon this can be emulated anywhere on the trent as long as the flow is under your feet 🤔 i remember we'd see you and your wife years ago walking the dearne to us you were like an A lister that we were scared to talk to 😊😊😊 we were just kids , do you ever fish the dearne bob , keep up the good work 👍
Super stuff
Brilliant video bob brilliant floats as well dont use any other than dave Harrell I'll have to have a go on tidal not bin for years its dave by the way
Barbel on the float is a passion of mine, but I think for the purest experience you must use a centrepin reel. That being said, I'd never even considered fishing for them on the Tidal Trent this way - the river I fish is substantially smaller and shallower.
Adapt, Adopt and improve. I have never forgotten that. All the best from Alan and Carl, Clifton Grove.
Funnily enough I refer to that specific quote in my upcoming book and include a picture of it.
Great Video Bob. Really enjoyed that. Love floating fishing for Barbel on the Wye. Nothing better than seeing the float vanish and the pull of a big barbel. I’m going to have to give it a go on the Tidal if conditions are good.
Great video Bob. Thanks for sharing. Interesting point on the feeding and bait dropper usage 👏
Lovely fishing Bob..
Thanks 👍
Nice video Bob. You certainly got the shoal going there. I suppose you could use meat too. Is that just downstream from Cromwell on Ashfield AA water. Tight lines Sir 💪
Yes on both counts.
Lovely fishing! Have subscribed 👍🎣🐟
Haha... I was going to recommend this to you as well. Good stuff eh?
@@grahamnash9794 Definitely. I’ve grown up reading Bob’s advice 🎣🐟
Float fishing for them is brilliant, we fly fish for them on the river Ribble! Now that is fun! Cracking video bob
Any tips! I fish the ribble mainly on stick for silvers , had a couple of barbel,, plenty on the feeder as its pretty easy ,. Certainly fly would be interesting!
Yes they are!
Great video Bob. My type of Trent fishing now and I have rarely legered in the last three seasons. I have not yet ventured to the tidal though. Looking forward to picking up a copy of your book on 6th November at the Newark Showground. Is there a reason you use all shot rather than olivettes?
@richardburns1287 there are plenty of "on line" olivettes available now or just use float stops on the line and adjust either as necessary. Big avons or bolos for bottom feeding fish is not really stick float fishing for which I would use shot to adjust presentation and sink rate.
A bob Roberts dvd changed my angling forever a legend in my book
Have you read his book on all things ledgering, great read full of info👍
@davep6286 I'll check that out thanks
@@michaelvincent8306 It's called the Complete Book Of Legering. Occasional copy still crops up on eBay, etc.
Great video and catch! Thnx
Thanks for this video Bob I enjoyed it. Thank you for all the other stuff you do regarding the Trent as well 👍
Good video as usual bob iv been meaning to try it this method for ages
You should
My, you are on the ball Leigh! Well done for finding it so quickly. Web site is going live in the morning and to save time I made this clip visible to test the link through works a matter of minutes ago. There will be over 30 more clips to follow in the coming weeks and months. Catch up soon.
Brilliant Bob. I have never caught a barbel on the float but will be giving it ago on the Ribble 😁
@@wesleydavies1227 It is not as hard as some make it out to be. Location and correct feeding is everything. Focus on those and you won't go far wrong.
Lovely Bob!
Brilliant! Really enjoyed it.
fantastic a proper angler and a well shot video and music loved it all :)
Some very nice footage there Bob and some lovely fish, thanks for posting it
Read your blog a lot Bob and enjoyed those clips, some great footage. You have a dodgy taste in music though :-)
Good music choice there Bob, fitted rather nicely, and some fantastic footage, especially that barbel taking, what an amazing sight!! Still yet to catch a barbel! I also watched your Caught in the Act parts 3 and 4 and thoroughly enjoyed all the chapters and the footage was exceptional! Need to get my hands on parts 1 and 2 when I get some dish, haha! Tom Aldous
Brilliant!! I wish I could watch one of these every month! No, wait, make that every day :D Carl
