ISCAST-Christianity & Science in Conversation
Australia
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 14 มี.ค. 2016
ISCAST-Christianity & Science in Conversation is a network of people, from students to distinguished academics, exploring the interface of the sciences, technology, and Christianity.
We are convinced that Christian faith has much to say in engagement with the sciences, and we are concerned that so many people, both outside and some within the Christian church, think that there is a destructive conflict between faith and science.
The rapid development of science and technology has left many people bewildered, leading some to accept a naturalistic, "science-only" mindset, while others retreat to a fundamentalism that rejects much of mainstream science. With Christians throughout history, ISCAST stands for another way: a dynamic dialogue that critically engages with both Christian faith and the sciences, allowing each to contribute to our understanding of the other. For over 30 years ISCAST has promoted the harmony between faith and the sciences.

Dinosaurs, Earthquakes, and Deep Time - Planet Earth on the Frontline of Science and Faith
Planet earth is the beautiful home that God provided for us to live in and care for, yet it can bring suffering-think earthquakes and volcano disasters. How old is it? Did Noah’s flood cause the rocks we see today? What do dinosaurs and other fossils tell us? The new science of geology was the enemy of Church and Bible in the 19th century-or was it? We’ll discuss all these issues, with a plethora of visual imagery.

The Untold History of Science | Declan Ellis | ISCAST Perth
มุมมอง 1742 หลายเดือนก่อน
We’re often told that the history of science is a war between light and darkness. We’re told that the church buried a whole millennium of history in a scientific dark age, and fought the Enlightenment with tooth and claw. But is this really true? Drawing on the work of contemporary science historians, this talk will unearth the real history of science and the church. Declan Ellis studied histor...
A Memory Approach to Jesus' Resurrection | Dr David Graieg | ISCAST Perth
มุมมอง 602 หลายเดือนก่อน
The first accounts of Jesus’ resurrection were written some two decades after the event in question. Given that human memory can be unreliable and distortions can occur, can we have any confidence that Jesus’ resurrection was rightly remembered, or has whatever happened faded into the fog of the forgotten? Dr David Graieg is a lecturer in Christian studies at Sheridan Institute for Higher Educa...

Graeme Clark won the Prime Minister’s Science Prize for his groundbreaking development of the bionic ear. At four years old his kindergarten teacher asked what he wanted to do when he grew up. Graeme’s father was almost deaf, and Graeme’s response was definite: “I want to fix ears.” For the full story and endorsements, see Prof. Graeme Clark's book at: iscast.org/news/buy-it-now-graeme-clark-s-...

Human Ageing as a Creational “Good” | David J. Hooker | ISCAST-NZCIS Conversations 2024 S3 #8

Human Ageing as a Creational “Good” Aversion toward the aged, “aging anxiety,” ageism, and scientific efforts to stop or reverse ageing, reveal a contemporary world struggling to accept the aged and the ageing process. Unfortunately, the response from the Christian theological community is unsure because it discordantly supports two fundamental yet polarised claims: (a) that human ageing is a g...

Answers on Genesis and Science The Bible tells an amazing story of how God makes the world and then reaches out to save it as people misuse the freedom, he gave them. These questions are also central to the work of the American philosopher Charles Peirce (1939-1914). Peirce’s thought has ma...

Thank you Michael Mowson
I had never heard of that quote from Darwin before at 29:20; "I am inclined to look at everything as resulting from designed laws, with the details, whether good or bad, left to the working out of what we may call chance." Charles Darwin. This is a remarkable quote.
Doru mentioned his Orthodox tradition of Theosis (becoming like God) which I find fascinating. Some of these Orthodox teachings are worth investigating.
I’m inspired by the variety and unity of personalities and ideas expressed here.
We're pleased to hear this! Thank you very much for the feedback.
Very cool video. Can't wait for the conference.
Glad you liked it, we're looking forward to COSAC too.
Fantastic Video Thank YOU. I will watch it again at bedtime. The acronym CIG, for the full name "Coney Island Green Theory", was first supported by a gentleman from the Vatican Observatory in Arizona of all places. And so the acronym was adopted as CIG is so much easier and quicker to write, thus saving more time for prayer. XXII. IMPLICATIONS OF DISPLACEMENT (ENHANCEMENT) OF THE BIG BANG MODEL The BIG BANG so enamored the religious community as it appeared to provide Scientific evidence for that singular Genesis moment. CIG does not displace the Big Bang Model but only serves to continue to support it. Further, it may be a spectacular opportunity for the "SUPREME POWERS" oooooh, aaahhhhh, mmmmmmm, yup, to adopt a new theory that provides that oneness of combining the fundamentals. Everything is everything else. One. Current Physics does not offer an equivalence of Matter to Spacetime, but only an influence of one upon the other. CIG rather offers a direct and indisputable equivalence, one where Space and Matter are defined in terms of the other. So too is Time, but I'm not telling. Never show all your cards. Now we can all celebrate "Festivus". Here are the new definitions: XI. DEFINITIONS: MATTER: That which has mass, consists of the curvature of space-time and has an element of motion. While the current definition of space in its simplest form customarily is: "a boundless three-dimensional extent in which objects and events occur and have relative position and direction" As can be seen, since we have redefined Matter in the context of the curvature of space-time, we must also redefine "Space" as well, herein and as best I can, as follows: SPACE: That three dimensional extent in which objects and their events occur, wherein those objects of Matter are they themselves curved space-time, wherein the aforementioned space consists of and emerges via the unfolding of that Matter into various volumes and densities of Space by way of opportunistic rates of motion of Matter. In it's simpler form: SPACE: Unfolded Matter, emergent from rates of motion. That's it and if I come up with a better definition or if someone else would like a try in the context of CIG Theory, please have a go at it. In this manner, a particle can become spatial and go through both slits in the double slit experiment. CIG has redefined Matter and Space
Glad to hear you appreciated the talk! We will pass your comment on to Kevin and our Perth team.
The simplicity in Christ is evident in matthew, God made us just as he said, at the beginning male and female, Matthew 19:4 “And he answered and said unto them, Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female,” Confirmed in Mark Mark 10:6 “But from the beginning of the creation God made them male and female.” Luke 17:27 “They did eat, they drank, they married wives, they were given in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark, and the flood came, and destroyed them all.” Luke 17:28 “Likewise also as it was in the days of Lot; they did eat, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they builded;” Matthew 24:39 “And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.” 2 Peter 3:6 “Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished: Genesis 6:17 “And, behold, I, even I, do bring a flood of waters upon the earth, to destroy all flesh, wherein is the breath of life, from under heaven; and every thing that is in the earth shall die.” Fossils evey place in the world, dinosaurs found with soft tissue, blood vessels, all over world, fossilised humans around world, Ancient Egypt alone shows hundreds of very large people being served by small people, Emily teeter University of Chicago expert Curious why ancient Egyptians worshiped men then idols, also wonders why magnificent stoneware suddenly disappeared for 500 years, turning into basic clay beer urns etc, wonders why Roman’s and Greeks call “ Nubia” ethiopia.. Dominic goerlitz found iron and magnetite traces in giza pyramid as others have, confirming Iron Age started same time as Genesis 4,
Not only does real geology confirm Noah’s flood, the New Testament confirms it many times , Hebrews 11:7 “By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house; by the which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is by faith.” 1 Peter 3:20 “Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water.” 2 Peter 2:5 “And spared not the old world, but saved Noah the eighth person, a preacher of righteousness, bringing in the flood upon the world of the ungodly;” Need to study like a workman, see all the other places! 2 Timothy 2:15 “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” Joshua 1:8 “This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.” Well worth watching creation research playlist, “ the rocks cry out project”. Logic will scream at you!!!!
Andrew Brown hasn’t even thought about what geologists denied for 40 years, but now is shown to be scientific fact , how quickly Rock eroded in the lake missoula flood, ( Michael J Oard expert on missoula flood) neither has Andrew addressed the fact that every single fossil no matter the “ presumed aged” including the comb jellie, are virtually exactly the same, as stromatolites, and all the insects etc in Burmese amber are virtually exactly the same, every fossil, none has changed, unless it got squashed!!!! There is no evidence for evolution, and real science like found on creation research channels video “ the rocks cry out , layers and liars, shows how quickly strata really forms, and their other videos show the impossibility of strata forming as evolutionary thinking says, fossils have to be covered very rapidly, And even Cambridge University studies show aborigines languages are only 4000 years old, the Sahara had massive amounts of vegetation suddenly disappear around 4000 years ago, well worth watching creation research video boomerangs to Babel. But most of all study Gods word as he told us in New Testament, same as he told us in Old Testament in different words, same gospel was preached to Israelites, only Jesus not manifest in earthly form, made of a woman…… Hebrews 4:2 “For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it.” 2 Timothy 2:15 “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” Joshua 1:8 “This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.” Only those who do this are likely to have their understanding of the parables, proverbs, figures opened, Mark 4:34 “But without a parable spake he not unto them: and when they were alone, he expounded all things to his disciples.” John 14:22 “Judas saith unto him, not Iscariot, Lord, how is it that thou wilt manifest thyself unto us, and not unto the world?”
No matter that l am not religious, but I have been long hoping for people to appreciate this unique gift of our universe so we can all share its beauty and abundance.Tony has done wonders to that end, brilliant!
Thank you Veronika. Yes, it is a marvellous story that offers hope in a time of crisis.
Another excellent discussion, raising a lot of uncomfortable questions that deserve more thought.
Thanks for your feedback Mark! Glad to hear.

hi Bodhy
Regarding Bronwyn's question at 41:00 or so, Megan De Franza's book 'Sex Difference in Christian Theology' mentions several kinds of intersex conditions that appear in the Talmud, where the rabbis try to work out whether each would be male or female under Jewish law.
Moses: Hear O Israel, Lord, our God is one. Jesus: Hear O Israel, Lord, our God is one. Muhammad: Say: God is One. Peace, be upon them all.
not panpsychism again.....
No one sane gives a fuck what the Bible says about anything...
I have requested for ten years that TH-cam stop their algorithm from suggesting racist ignorant religious videos as religion to me an Australian Aboriginal is an excuse to enslave women and rape children. religion is suspension of reality not a part of it, so you trying to incorporate nonsense of religion into technology and science is as far as i am concerned child abuse because their is no warning on this video that is not based in science but the nonsense of religion. I posting to let you know your video is going to be used against TH-cam for prothlesizing me in the privacy of my home, With out any authorisation and at least 10 years of requesting youtube stop suggesting genocidal middle eastern death cults to me IN MY OWN FUCKING HOME.
An interesting lecture at times, but overall a dismal view of how the world works. If history tells us anything it says that projections and predictions are invariably wrong, even if we stick the word "Science" in front. Worse still, attempts to use political power to "solve" the predicted disaster invariably creates new injustices. Professor Boston, please read Thomas Sowell.
Does Cudworth have any positive role for the instincts? Or is it only due to conscious deliberation that something is good / right?
Could you please upload these conversations on audio streaming platforms as well? Much appreciated!
Will human DNA modification make humans healthier and smarter, I will assume, the probability of yes is forthcoming. However, will it increase internal happiness. If happiness is a subjective value like beauty, goodness and love, then human DNA modification will have minimal progress towards increasing human's internal happiness 🙂
Grant is so elegant but deep in his thinking.
The duality and separation where monotheistic religion connection gives a shift in perspective from the positron and electron pairs to understand Baryonic asymmetry as the monotheistic state of the singularity, He the Father, He-BEC isotropic singularity.
Christ is seen in biology. There is a Spiritual healing through the Holy Spirit. Opening up of the tomb and the three days of resurrection.
Good versus evil. Positive and negative. Christ provides a door into life ever lasting. In the atomic structure aligned with the Passion.
The metaphor for the fall in terms of Christ's Passion in Christ travels from one place to another for He is placed into a tomb. Three days, then to rise. Lift up the cross. NH3+ atomic cross through Christ on the cross where we are created in his image. Through Him, in Him, with Him. Our conscious being is constructed through atomics. Drawing our being into alignment with the atomic cross.
Christ falls three times carrying the cross. This provides context for the fall.
Peggy is brillant. Thank you for this video.

The trinity does not exist because ALIEN, UNKNOWN to the directly concerned Person: JESUS. He reiterated throughout four gospels to be ONLY IN THE COMPANY OF THE FATHER (who is a spirit), NEVER with two Persons! Thus, we are sure that NO THIRD DIVINE PERSON EXISTS. For example, the following verses are INCOMPATIBLE with the existence of a triune God "I am not ALONE because the Father is with me" or "The Father has not left me ALONE because I always do what pleases Him.". The trinity theory was formulated later to bring together the different currents of thought about Christianity that existed at the time. Its goal was to put peace and uniformity of thought in Christianity - good for the roman empire - NOT to respect the Truth. That theory was negotiated between the different parties until an agreement was reached. That is, the doctrine of the trinity is only a CONVENTIONAL (i.e. false) doctrine issued in a first form by the Nicaea CONVENTION. It was not understood that the gospels disclose just three divine NAMES, not three divine PERSONS! The "Spirit of God" (AKA "Holy Spirit") is simply "God (almighty) who is a spirit", i.e. no "helper-God" person exists. That old conventional doctrine sets out EXTREME nonsense regarding an invented "substance" which is supposed "to form God-Persons"! When you have one "substance" forming three different Persons, it logically ensues that the alleged ONE God can only be that one "substance", not the three Persons. Further, from the gospels you can very easily READ that (A) NO THIRD GOD-PERSON EXISTS: for ex. "those who will believe in me through their word so that they all may be one, as you, FATHER, are in ME, and I in YOU. THEY also may be ONE IN US..." and that (B) THE SON IS NOT ALMIGHTY as the Father: for ex. ("the Father is GREATER than I"). In this time of IRREVERSIBLE DECLINE, only TRUTH can save Christianity: that doctrine should be dismissed.

Thank you Richard, for a wonderful summary of Hulme's work. I agree that we need conversation in order to understand. I am visiting a friend next week who was trying to make that happen but he has given up hope. I thought that the Church might take the lead as peacemakers. I am still waiting.
Courageous theology here that is able to seek wisdom from those still closely connected to nature in our industrial melee. Ignorance of our custodianship need not be our default sin.

There are good and evil possibilities with just about any technology. This calls for early engagement and discernment on the part of Christians, so the ethical considerations can be thrashed out.
