The Gentleman Farmer
Canada
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 2 ก.ย. 2013
Kirk Fell Farm is a 143ac permaculture farm in Northern Alberta, Canada. The farm is owned by the Metcalfe family, who started their unconventional homesteading journey in 2017.
The farm is named after Kirk Fell, a prominent mountain in the Pennine range that overlooks Stan’s childhood home in the UK Lake District. The purpose of this TH-cam channel is to help educate others about applying permaculture principles to common agricultural and horticultural practices, to improve the foods we eat, and inspire people to reduce their carbon footprint by growing their own food.

Hello sir!this is Eli from Texas, I just signed up to the the climb on June 8 2025!!! Hope to see you all
The cows get our citrus content from loop pickups.
No shopping online for me. Still supporting the businesses in town mostly. I do find parts numbers online for a lot of my equipment, that way I’m as smart or smarter than the parts man looking at me.
Hard living in close proximity to another neighbor with dogs. It can be quite the challenge as you know too well. Good fences make good neighbors I suppose. I just use panels as gates for the sheep and goats. Too hard to get a gate set right to keep them in. I set them panels on boards in the gateways. I tried the swinging board thing under a gate before, it’s ok till they figure out to push on it. Lol, then you’re tieing it anyways.
For your gate question, I am not sure how much of a gap a sheep can crawl under, but for my cows, my gate is about 8" to 12" above the ground. I just clear the snow away as it builds up. I had a frozen turd yesterday that i had to keep lifting the gate over. It was pretty annoying, so i cut it off with the bucket. My pet peeve is snow in the area i need to operate in. I try my best to keep it cleared. One less struggle for the next day.
What is your favorite EDC pocket knife? I'm using a delica 4 right now with the serrations. I watch a ton of knife channels on here and they love the worksharp field sharpener it's really good!!
Are you a fan of Chinese orange chicken or general tsos?
I’ve never actually tried either. Are they any good?
@KirkFellFarm yes general tsos is the best has a little spicy not much and orange is the sweeter version kind of. Both come with rice usually at Chinese take out places. You def should try it
You are required to have a mechanical inspection for insurance? Is that a Canada thing? Cause I've never heard of anything like that here in the US. We used to have to get a general inspection for our annual vehicle registration, but I've not heard of one for insurance...interesting.
Yes if the vehicle is older than 11 years old, then you have to get an inspection from a licensed mechanic within a month of buying it. If you don’t get the inspection, the insurance company will cancel your policy.
It’s definitely a Canadian thing.
Wrap that filter with some bug screen. No filters in town?
Nothing for that model. I can get a filter for the previous model but not the one I’ve got. It’s on its way now.
Isn’t that funny. Houston has an air filter for a Yamaha “Snow “machine!!
Ya it wouldn’t be my first guess.
I use a 1 x 32 belt sander to sharpen my knives and as long as you go through the grits and strop at the end, I can get my Global knives sharper than when they came out of the factory. I also use it for sharpening chisels, scissors, axes, lawn mover blades etc. You find a review of it on my channel. And probably other videos on sharpening. Once you buy the unit, it's very versatile and I use it for all sorts of jobs and chores. I even have a little side hustle where I sharpen stuff for locals, for a few bob.
I’ve got an electric knife sharpener. It was life changing. But it’s not top end of the market by any means. Way easier than the stone or drag through type sharpener. I run Buck knives myself. Seem good.
My Grandma left me her fancy dishes in her will. I wish she’d left me her electric knife sharpener.
Fiskars sharper. Not electric . But very good. For knives and axes.
Wow, first poster! Great video. Try putting a spring type cover over the cord so he can't chew it anymore.
Been warm here the past couple days. Guess I’m hauling some fat goat kids and lambs down to Tofield on Monday. Prices jumped a lot this week.
Never show or ask the kids if they would like to eat something. Just put it on the plate and put in the ear plugs. Eventually the complaining goes away. (Could take years). But it will pay in the end. Then they will be asking for Dad's cooking. I am not sure about the intro music. After hearing that, I feel like getting some ink or a stud, just to prove I can. Keep the uploads coming!
your a cooking show host
That’s some Darwinism there brother, fresh outa the shower no toque or jacket and pyjamas at -23.
@ good call
looks like your knife could use some time on a stone. LOL
Looks tasty. Just froze my butt off in that north wind doing chores.
That's a great idea for the BBQ sauce. I am going to steal that one. Have a great new year Stan!
real tree isn't dropping needles yet - I suppose that means I should get it out the door tomorrow.
I put my cords in a pvc pipe
Hahaha I'm with you, only I gained like 27 pounds, been skinny my whole damn life, not no more, 2025 is the year I finally achieve my life goal of becoming so fat that I have to look in a mirror to see my willy
Just waiting on a warmup to take the outside lights down around here. Little hard on the cords in -20.
At least you gained something. Silver lining
Hope they can put the run on those elk. Been there. Don’t hold back. Good luck to them.
Ya I didn’t have any legal advice for them. I only had illegal advice. 🤣🤣🤣
@guys with year round tags and snowmobiles is my advice.
Hanging with the tourists. Lol 🤣. The parks drive me nuts. Can’t take that place, way too many people.
Happy New Year 🥳🍾🥂🍻👍🎉
Goodmorning and a happy newyear
What is a loop load?!
Loop is a program that takes the surplus food from grocery stores and distributes it to farmers instead of sending it to the landfill. We get meat for, produce, dairy, baked goods, and a bit of random stuff like canned clams or gluten free muffin mixes. I haven’t had to buy dog food since we started.
@KirkFellFarm wow thats awesome 🤠
New this week for us was a few full boxes of bananas. Oddly enough, the cows loved them.
Have a good trip!! 👍🍻
We had an unusually large loop this Saturday. 4 boxes of meat and a totally full truck of produce and 11 boxes of bakery.
Goodmorning Mr. Gentleman.
That wire loom is just an appetizer for a dog. Lol . Dang predator control dogs ate more cords around here through the years than I’d like to know.
It feels like sunday here too
Our big white dog and the neighbor's big white dog absolutely hate each other. After a couple of brutal fights, they stay on their side of the road. Its funny they figured out to respect the line.
Better than them building puppies. Lol
Good thing the speedo was in km/hr. When I was dating my wife she had a VW bug and would leave me in the dust. So, I asked her why do you drive so fast, she said,'"why are you so slow, This stupid bug can only go 70". Hmmm. Miles/hour! I can say it handled well on the corners. As for your bedding problem. I would have the girls int he bag filling empty feed bags until it was all urbanized. I bet in less than a hour and bath you would have something convenient. By the way, I do have a RMK 600 2011 for sale. $4200.00 out the door including GST. Low KM's, but unfortunately the display stopped working.
Your a champ Stan, three or four hours with the monster in-law at a time is enough for me. 👍🥃🥃🥃🥃🥃.
Good evening Stan 🥃🥃🥃👍🍻
Dude, it's her tractor! You just run it! As for Christmas, it is a great time, except for the gifts. We should drop that and just drink and be merry. Hot choco for the kids of course. Except when you want them to go bed early. LOL I would have a hard time trusting the Freeze mizer. Heat trace is cheap and just let it drip.
Merry Merry back to you and your family Stan.
Brother has 80 ewes lambed. 220 to go. Want some bottle lambs? Lol. He had 6 sets of triplets and a set of quads last night. 🤣👍🍻
Sheesh
@ here’s your chance to build up a herd. Lol 😆
Hahaha, the imagination game. Lol. 😆🤣👍🍻. We don’t play those games either. I got my electric chainsaw. Got my chocolate orange too!!
Nice!
Bladder
That’s the word I was looking for!
Nice light display at evergreen park. Lots to see there.
