A bit of a repost: About a year ago I uploaded this midi as a video when it was ~3 minutes long, and shortly thereafter I wound up writing more sections for it. It bugged me that that video was missing the second half so I'm uploading the full thing now.

Are king crimson one of your inspirations? i'm trying to learn some magnolia midis on guitar just for fun, and they really remind me of some 80s crimson part at times. Could be a coincidence because they certainly aren't thought to be played on guitar but still!
Very plausible! Most of my melodies are rooted in mathrock/postrock styles, which can trace some of their lineage back to King Crimson. Can I ask which magnolia midi you were learning? map01 and 02 songs were written on guitar and I could send you the tabs if you wanted. The rest were written on piano roll so you're on your own there ;D
@@Ribbiks currently trying my best at map 01's midi. It really makes sense now knowing it was played on guitar! The way you can resort to open strings and such. I would love to have the tabs! I'm kinda fingering it how it feels the most comfortable to me, but having the author's take on the tablatures would be really great!

it's delightful to have a coherent, long-form release from you; i used it on my run this morning (i've also used the 20x7 soundtrack...). can you be convinced to start a bandcamp page?
Perhaps once I finish the next collection of midi things that I'm working on I'll consider it. These metal midi are meant to be dumb-fun and a bit silly, so it feels too formal to post them on something like bandcamp as if they were an album of 'real' music, heh. But maybe that's a hangup I'll change my mind on in the future.

What software are u using to write your midis?
I use this dead software that no longer really exists: www.soundonsound.com/news/ergonis-easy-beat-v21-mac but there's a similar program called Aria Maestosa that works on modern systems: ariamaestosa.github.io/ariamaestosa/docs/download.html

It is amazing how much more full the sound is compared to the original, which already had so much spice. It might be your soundfont, but I've never heard reverb this clean in a midi before. Phenomenal stuff.

There is no escape from this 808 drumkit using deadly subconscious clicking control noises. Even on radio the Roland puppet assassins spread deadly analog mind control state mandated brain pattern altering step signals. Even in my workplace I have been reprimanded, mocked and shamed out of office for sharing this unforgivable truth about the mandated centralised deadly control radio speakers above our heads. The organised Roland puppets have even attached their clicking death step signals into TH-cam, using the puppet controlled recommendation algorithm to attack and assault those daring to trying to escape their deadly mind control grasp. Even in my yard as I sit down to listen to independent puppet string free musicians' content I am struck by unmistakable deadly compression subconscious step signals orchestrated by Roland and their control puppet assassins

I use some crusty abandonware called EasyBeat, which I can only recommend if you happen to have an old powerpc mac laying around ;D. It has a modern successor called Aria Maestosa which is pretty good though.

How did you learn to compose music?
Nearly all my midi things are guitar riffs in disguise, an instrument I've played since I was a kid. So getting notes on the page usually just involves noodling around, writing down the ideas that don't suck, until there's enough for a whole song ;D

I find this track really interesting from a metric perspective. Am I right that the opening part is in 7/4 with a switch to 5/4 around 0:57? Never really figured out much of anything past that point, just for the opening section I had to deal with MuseScore imposing everything over 4/4 and could only guess at the actual time signature by counting the bass part's sixteenth notes.
Greetings! Sorry the midi file doesn't demarcate the meter changes, as I use a crusty old sequencer that isn't able to do that, heh. The intro section is chunks that are mostly in 7 but punctuated with slightly longer meters. Specifically, whilst the bass is on C the meters are repeating blocks of [7/16 + 7/16 + 7/16 + 9/16], then when the bass drops down to Ab it's a block of [7/16 + 7/16 + 7/16 + 11/16]. You're right that the section at 0:57 is straightforward 5/4. I'm glad there are timesig enthusiasts out there who notice this sorta stuff ;D

your music reminds me of toby fox's musical work (take that information how you will), in that you're the only artist i know of that recaptures that same feeling of his music i get whenever i listen to it (but its new and unique, hard to describe). it just has so much soul in it :)

thanks! the high notes are all natural harmonics (7th-fret, specifically: www.rbkz.net/midi/tab/i15_a.png ). to emulate in midi I just raised em by an octave and threw on some modulation, turned out sounding nice ;D.

@@Ribbiks personally I like both and I felt like there's both in this map :) the scrolling floor one and the less precise oku platforms, I'd say they are more of W key sections :D
