BNSF Pasco-Yakima Turn Westbound at Kiona WA 10-5-24

Yesterday, while visiting Lubbock, I caught up with Plainsman Switching Co. making this move on the BNSF Slayton Sub main line. They had just pulled a long string of tank cars out of the BNSF East yard out onto the main line and then were shoving them back into their yard when I shot this clip. These two former Canadian National GP9s put on a great show of sound and smoke.

A short BNSF train runs northbound across the Pecos River bridge in the background and around the wye to the yard in La Huerta. Presumably, the train has returned from a run south on the Loving Industrial Lead to fetch these cars. Since they don't need this much power for such a short train, I'm guessing the GE locomotives were probably tied down somewhere on the lead after an earlier crew ran ...

Steam-powered excursion trains returning to Durango, Saturday afternoon, Sep 19 2023. The first run-by is of the second train to depart Silverton with K-36 2-8-2 480 leading. Another K-36, number 482, departed earlier and is seen with its train in all the other sequences.

Footage taken on a two-day trip to (hopefully) catch one or more Alcos in operation. First day was a warm-up teaser, chasing ex-Santa Fe B23-7s on the Hugo Line. Second day was the main event, with RS-27 316 running on the Hennepin Job. Admittedly, capturing video was a secondary goal on this trip - still photography being the primary. However, I got a few good runbys that I hope you'll enjoy.

Run-bys I shot (most handheld) on the Black Hills Central RR in June 2021. Featured locomotive is BHC 108, a Baldwin 2-6-6-2T built in 1924 for the Potlatch Lumber Co. Here's a link to the BHCRR website: www.1880train.com/

Amtrak trains #3 (westbound) and #4 (eastbound) in the northeast corner of New Mexico. For now, these are the only trains running on the Raton Sub, making them the only, and probably last, to run a daily, and ever-shrinking gauntlet of vintage semaphore signals ("blades") near the village of Wagon Mound. Only four such installations remain, and rumors are that these will all be replaced by year...

A good-luck encounter with Montana Rail Link's twice-daily westbound Gas Local attacking Evaro Hill just west of Missoula

Three trains, two days, two trestles. First is Union Pacific's thrice-weekly Plummer Turn crossing a former Milwaukee Road steel trestle east of Manito WA. Second and third are two eastbound priority trains crossing a beautiful steel trestle crossing Crab Creek and a farm road at a spot called Canby between Edwall and Bluestem WA.

BNSF manifests between Pasco WA and Fresno CA are nothing unusual, however, this one was particularly cool. Power was five Norfolk Southern units, three up front and two rear DPUs. However, the train I thought was approaching turned out not to be the PASFRS.

I visit my son in Phoenix a couple times a year, and sometimes have time to check out the local railroad scene. Just like nearly everywhere in the West, the railroads are the same: BNSF and UP. But, that doesn't make them any less interesting to watch. This video is a compilation of a few different trains I saw on my last visit in February 2022.
