Frederick Freedom, known as Frederick Free, is no ordinary young boy. He's a passionate animal advocate with a magical gift: he can talk to animals and understand their woes. Visiting the zoo each week, Frederick listens to his animal friends-Mojo the monkey, Lilly the lion, and Harry the hippo-all longing for freedom in their natural homes. Determined to set them free, Frederick devises a bold plan to "borrow" the zookeeper’s keys, outsmarting the fierce guard dogs, Growler and Stan, with a feast of irresistible stew.
With the animals free, they board a hot air balloon to reach their distant homelands. But when the balloon struggles with the weight, a flock of birds swoops in to carry them to safety. Finally home, the animals cheer for their young hero before Frederick returns to his own family, now inspired to take on new missions to protect the environment.
The story ends with a powerful question for readers: Do animals belong in zoos?
