Howling Moon 270 Swing Awning - Owner's Review
Another review of the equipment that I use on my Land Rover, this time the Howling Moon 270 Swing Awning.
An excellent awning that provides ample of protection and easy to use.
Pro's
1) well constructed
2) 300GSM ripstop canvas
3) self supporting up to 20km winds
4) legs provided in all arms
5) walls ( door or window ) can be purchased individually or as a set.
Con's
1) ground pegs are shit!
2) tie down straps were replaced with tent rope.
3) package cover is not waterproof
4) zippers to attach the walls to the awning were down graded to standard zippers. Pre 2020 versions of Howling Moon Swing Awnings had HD zippers. The best proof I could find is this video: th-cam.com/video/hZoZ3nV7f5w/w-d-xo.html
From the time I placed the order and finally received this awning, it was nearing 6 months, the distributor prided himself that I was getting the updated 2020 awning. By changing to a standard zipper on the awning and changing out the tie down straps for tent rope I think it was more of a step backwards as I did my research and knew exactly what I wanted when I placed the original order.
With that said, the few faults are not enough to make me want to change. In heavy Nordic rains this swing awning has held up very well.
If this swing awning is within your price range, I'd recommend you taking a good look at it.
Thanks for watching and enjoy.

An Owner's Review of The Eezi-Awn Blade Rooftop Tent

This is my review of the Eezi-Awn Blade Rooftop tent. This is the first time I've ever stood in front of the camera making a video for TH-cam, so bear with me as I become more comfortable in front of the camera and also the wind noise did block out the audio a few times. We enjoy this rooftop tent and are out camping as much as we can, there are a few points that I've highlighted that I would l...

This video demonstrates the fridge/cooler drop slide that I made for my Land Rover. Does exactly as I wanted when I draw out the cooler, providing a 20 cm drop for ease of access to the contents in the fridge. Of course this is not the final product, more trimming/cutting, making a latch that locks it in place when closed and opened, then finally painting.

Later vehicles using any ABS hardware and software for an "E-Limited Slip" open diff traction control can be a boon to the "switching on" of the TrueTrac unit. Glad too to hear of your veh's improvements along the way over this last decade. Cheers.

    Guys, he has fitted Truetrac, not Lockers. Lockers cause problems, Truetrac don't. You should never put a Detroit Eaton Locker in the front axle. Nice to see someone with the intelligence to fit narrow tyres on a light truck, rather than something wide enough for a 20000+lb Unimog. Good vid.

      @tukocan 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hej Dean, the whole idea with this video was to help to inform those who are considering an awning for their adventure vehicles. Clearly I have helped you with your decision to buy another brand, they're not all perfect but on the other hand they are not all bad either, what matters is what suites "our" needs. At the time I bought this 270° awning, the brands you mentioned were and as far as I know are still not available here in Sweden other than Rhino which for me (like you said) fell to the bottom of my list. Thanks for your comments and all the best with the awning that you eventually buy which I'm sure will suite your needs as required.

    How much lighter is this to the commercial drop sides?

    • @tukocan
      @tukocan 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would say several kgs as it does not have flat bottom for the tray, no gas struts plus I did my best to keep this drop slide as light and strong as possible. This one does weigh between 8~9 kgs. A friend's brand name drop slide, we figured it was double in weight but I would recommend googling to compare figures.

    Hi Tukocan, thanks for the video. Is the ratio of drop to forward movement the same? I.e., if the fridge drops 22cm, does it also move forward 22cm? I ask because I plan to build a mini-kitchen in front of my fridge, and hope to have the whole thing on heavy-duty 1.5m sliders. I'll check out your other videos as well.

    • @tukocan
      @tukocan 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Steve, excellent question and my answer would be no. The 22cm forward distance would be too short because of the swing of the bottom platform. My suggestion is to mock up the mini kitchen with your fridge, then using thin pieces of plywood to mimic the dropslide swing when lower and raising the bottom platform. With 1.5m HD slides you should have plenty of space for your setup.

    I agree with all you’re points. I found the small gaps around the hinge on the front in mine aswell. As with you I just kick my shirt down into the corner. I actually don’t mind the mesh netting on the outside so far. I would assume it’s done for a reason, the possibility of it holding water and maybe wetting the bedding when packing up. The only major nitpick I have is no small rain awning on the side doors. To me, that would make all the difference, being able to have the side doors open a little to help with airflow in crappy weather.

    • @tukocan
      @tukocan 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for your comments Corey. I'm 100% with you on some kind of rain awning at the door plus better air circulation. Lots of planning and prep is needed by us just before going to bed, sometimes we are successful mostly we're not. LOL Even with the rear window open 10cm every night we get condensation, just image if you could crack the doors open a bit without the fear of rain coming in, that would make such a difference. We did get wet bedding while travelling last year but I can't blame it on the RTT, it was an unusually wet year for us, continual rain plus driving down the road, eventually the rain water was going to make it's way it. But the biggest issue we have which we did fix is the mesh, it's simply not suited for the Nordic environment. Getting eaten alive when your trying to relax still needs to be addressed, I did send an email (to which I never received a reply) pointing out the short falls that I did experience. I can only hope that like their closes competitor (AluCab) that they will listen to their customers and improve/upgrade their product. But with all that said, it's still a good product that we like. Even with the few short falls, if they are addressed in the future they will eventually have an outstanding product.

    • @Edge-dy9fh
      @Edge-dy9fh 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tukocan I had several minor issues right from day one such as the strap that holds the awning open snapping in very light wind conditions, the stitching on the outer bag failing, causing it to leak. The main reason I regret buying is the poor after sale service. I have been trying for weeks to buy a small aluminium extrusion that joins the arms to the hinge. It snapped in gust of wind. Until it's replaced I can't use the awning or even pack it back in it's bag. Thankfully I don't have any more road trips planned for the next few months.

      @tukocan 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Edge-dy9fh Thankfully I've not had those poor quality issues but I will say that I'm forever drying it out. The outer bag is not waterproof, because of it's design or how it's applied/mounted to the back plate, rain water enters instantly. Thank you for taking the time to produce your video which shows in great detail how to make a drop fridge slide. I am going to make one also modeled on the one you made. You have done a great job.

      Thank you Jeff, my drop slide works a dream and it's used regularly this time of the year. I hope I have hit all the main points in this video but your welcome to ask any questions if they arise. Good luck with your build.

    Very usefull review. Thanks. I am torn between this one and a similar awning from Darche. Does anyone know of any others I should be looking at?

      It's a jungle out there and it's not easy to find the "right" 270 awning that will suite your particular wants & needs. I was nearly on the money with this one, just a shame that the provided changed production methods without notification. With that said, it's still a top contender and we are happy with it. Another provider that began making 270 awnings after I bought mine is Quick Pitch, maybe theirs will hit the nail on the head for you? Thank you for you comment and good luck with your purchase.

      @@tukocan Thanks I didn't know about the Quick pitch awning. Looks like a good option.

    I don't quite see how the geometry of this thing works. If the timber represents the closing edge of your 4wd door then it won't close because the tray does not retract all the way back on the sliders. You can see this at 0:12.

      See my other video's, it does work and has been for sometime without any issues even with a fully loaded fridge.

      @@tukocan Ah yes, very good. I see that your shelf in the Land Rover is set back at least a couple of inches from the inside closing edge of your Landy door, so that the when your fridge overhangs the sliders it does not cause an obstruction. I don't have that luxury, I need my fridge to retract all the way back on the sliders. Still trying to figure out how this can be done...

    how did you get the length of the horizontal bars that attach to the slides

    • @tukocan
      @tukocan 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Those pieces of metal I cut them slightly longer than the slides. Once everything was assembled I welded tabs on the front ends for the locking pins to go through. They should be no shorter than the slides for support but you can make them as long as you wish or available space allows you. I made mine as compact as possible because of space limitations in my Land Rover but if you have a pickup or the likes, you can make the drop slide larger to carry additional items. Good luck with your build.
