    Yeah, 1/4" birch is more expensive... because of quality. Ten dollar gets you something that falls apart, and is never meant to be seen in any meaningful way- that includes construction uses... always needs primer always needs work. This is just a flake talking about art for ten minutes... give her about ten more years, see what she says then.

    • @dianehansma1725
      @dianehansma1725 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually, she knows what she is talking about! 1/4" birch is still cheaper than 1/8" thickness...because you have to make or buy a frame for it! You can hang 1/4 without frame!

    If you are using acrylic... then you might be able to get away with not priming... until the Lewan acidity ruins your work, that is. This is obviously not a woman concerned about collectors asking questions about buying her work. Lewan is no longer available in many places, it was a proprietary brand of the cheapest plywood known to man, and I'd no sooner touch for a construction project let alone use it for an art panel... and to not seal it? Moronic.

    MDF is not archival for painting on. It can absorb a lot of moisure from the air and melts with any moisture. Its good for practice panels. Gesso both sides, and all the edges to help seal it. Wear a mask if you sand mdf, its awful stuff. Not really worth all the prep time for practice panels in my opinion. 1/8" ply is way better and you can get them to cut it to size for you at home depot. I layout all the panel sizes I want from a 4'x8' sheet and bring a diagram for the person on the saw to work with. I try to keep the cuts to a minimum because you have to pay for the cuts after a certain number... the saw person lets it slide sometimes... but if the saw person gets annoyed with you, you pay every time. 😆 Never heard of the wood you are working with here. I use clear gesso on raw wood to keep the grain.

    Echo what another commenter said, if painting with oil the substrate must be sized and primed so the art will not break down over time.

    Your are is pretty darn cool. Have you painted on large hardboard? I wanted to do a large abstract and I am working on one that is 34x48. I know right? I just have to figure out how to frame it to hang. I don't stretch my own canvas and it's way too costly to buy larger ones. I get frustrated, because there should be a way to hang it, without a frame. If you have any ideas, I would love to know. So far, no one has tried hanging large one without a frame. Happy painting and warm greetings from Canada!!

    Hello, thank you for the video. I am ordering a panel of MDF in order to paint with oil painting. Would you say that getting a moisture resitant panel is a bad idea? Would you also suggest using sand paper before applying the Gesso??

    • @user-pb2kg1ng4g
      @user-pb2kg1ng4g 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      maudale : To answer your second question, I reckon that giving the board an appropriate sanding is a good idea - to give the surface 'teeth'; as MDF is very smooth. Then, when completely dry, sand with a very fine grade sandpaper between coats of gesso. When sanding MDF wear a mask, as MDF contains toxins. It is banned in certain countries, Cutting and sanding MDF creates very fine dust and if you are cutting a lot, do so in a well ventilated area - not to be dramatic, it is potentially combustable ! [Frankly, I'd get it cut at a timber yard as they can do it accurately. Cutting it by yourself, with a saw, is not advisable as it cuts like butter, and it is easy to go way off course]

    gesso is for canvas. they make a 100% acrylic for exterior house paint witch was made to withstand the weather so its tuff. get a flat finish so you can draw on it .if your painting with acrylic when your done you can coat it with modpoge ,,more then one coat .at lowes they sell a very thin type of finish ply wood that's like veneer.to mount your finished painting use 8 -1 1/2 inch squares of velcro

      Gesso is made from many things, more commonly used by the masters on panels to provide toothe and white surface to bond the oil to and bridge over to rabbit skin glue, which they used to seal the panel. It's not just for canvas, and the acrylic versions of gesso are a far cry from what the masters used, less of everything in them. Flat paint is just less plasticizers, and more gybsom. More plasicizers, however, which will shrink up and turn to dust in about 150 years... unlike Rabbitskin glue which has stood for about 200-250 with minimal cracking in most cases. The idea these things will be around for thousands of years is purely fiction.

    Prepared canvas should be slightly sanded and then a thin diluted layer of acrylic gesso applied. Too much may warp the stretchers but this works just fine and should produce a surface with just enough bounce for the hog hair brushes that provide the classic oil painters experience, and purchasing multiple canvas packages a the art/craft store is a real bargain if they are treated a bit to bring them up to studio grade. Panels are nice but too expensive for beginners, and most people are frustrated @ as with cheap oil pigments are a problem too (stains really) that are simply overwhelming in permanence and discouraging for even an accomplished painter such as myself with over forty years of experience. One tiny drop will turn a canvas into a horrible green mess. Mineral spirits will dull your paint and ruin your brushes and is NOT "safer" than gum spirits mixed with one half stand oil which is a safe medium to use with consistent results which is the only way to paint and get better with each canvas or panel. Classic pigments are the right choice as are beautiful cadmiums which can be poisonous. Common sense rules the day just as most anything else you do. Ventilation is key, as is hand washing and keeping dangerous chemicals out of reach of small children and pets. Just create a nice space to work and be safe, and panels can be bought at your local Lowes or Home Depot. Untempered masonite works fine, and birch panels are even better. Most are already cut into 24x24 or 48x48. I cut mine into fours and then gesso with acrylic or rabbit skin glue and titanium. See? Everyones a star!

    I'm sorry, did you say you don't have to gesso or prep wood for painting? IF you did, you do. If you like to see wood grain through your work, there are clear gesso options for that. Oil on bare wood will rot the wood over time just like it would rot canvas, which is why gesso is applied to them. As for acrylics, it's still important to seal and prep wooden surfaces because impurities from the wood can be drawn up through the moisture of what you are painting with and can discolor your paint. If I misunderstood you and you do seal your wood and prime it before using, sorry and please ignore me. :)

      @Michigan D I'm not an expert but I would sand the surface and then put gesso down so the paint doesn't peel off. It depends on the finish of the cabinet tho
