Ibn Arabi's Secret: The Path to Self-Completion
Unveiling the Hidden Wisdom
We propose that the Sufi mystic Ibn Arabi possessed a secret to self-completion-a truth hidden in plain sight, accessible to those with the insight to perceive it. This secret is embedded within his esoteric philosophy, particularly in his concept of the Tenth Intelligence, which represents a higher form of intellect or awareness. It serves as a conduit between the divine and the human mind, facilitating spiritual enlightenment and self-completion. By engaging with his teachings, one can uncover a path to realizing human potential, transcending limitations, and achieving unity with the divine. In tonight’s talk, we’ll discuss how Ibn Arabi's wisdom offers a blueprint for unraveling this secret for oneself.
The Role of The Tenth Intelligence
At the heart of Ibn Arabi’s teachings is the notion that divine reality manifests continuously through various forms, and the human being, as a microcosm of the universe, has the potential to fully embody this divine presence. The Tenth Intelligence serves as a key to this realization, acting as the bridge between the material and the spiritual realms. Through this intelligence, one can attain the highest state of self-awareness, navigating the delicate balance between transcendence and immanence. Unlike mystical paths that emphasize ascetic detachment, Ibn Arabi’s secret reveals that true completion lies in embracing the world-including daily life, relationships, and personal experiences-as a reflection of the divine and recognizing existence as an ongoing revelation of truth.
Practical Applications for Modern Seekers
Our discussion will also allow us to explore the practical implications of Ibn Arabi’s secret for us contemporary seekers. By engaging with his ideas, individuals can cultivate an active imagination that bridges the seen and the unseen, transforming mundane experiences into moments of divine encounter. This can be achieved through meditative visualization, contemplation of symbolic meanings, and engaging in reflective storytelling, all of which allow for deeper insights into the nature of reality and the self. The Tenth Intelligence is not just an abstract metaphysical concept; it is a living reality that, once understood, enables one to navigate life with clarity, wisdom, and a deep sense of connection to the greater whole.
Relevance in the Modern World
Ibn Arabi’s secret, though hidden in plain sight, invites each individual to embark on a journey of self-discovery that leads to the ultimate realization of completeness. His teachings remain profoundly relevant in today’s world, offering valuable insights for modern spiritual practices such as mindfulness, self-awareness, and the integration of sacred wisdom into daily life. By embracing his wisdom, seekers can cultivate a deeper understanding of themselves and their place in the divine order, ultimately achieving a state of harmony and fulfillment.

Polishing the wall feels to me as the de-crystallising process of one’s inner self. The more we are clear from within, the more we see things as a reflection to our inner clarity. The sages’ piece of art was only a reflection to the very polished clarity of the dervishes wall. FYI - I paused the talk upon hearing the question, as I wanted to attempt to answer myself. :) I loved the story

About 40 years ago I bought a book whose title was, I think, “The Monism of Ibn al ‘Arabi”. I’m afraid it was over my head, but I feel I owe a debt of gratitude nevertheless to Ibn al ‘Arabi. I think he saved me from becoming a communist. I worked as a phone company installer and joined the union. I was really attracted to the “Militant Action Caucus” because they were a real kick-butt group within the union, so what if they may have been a party front group? I applied for membership and the Militant Action lady came to interview me in my living room. “The Monism of Ibn al ‘Arabi” was sitting on my coffee table. “You’re into religion?” she exclaimed. I answered, “Well, I do think it’s a valid field of enquiry”. She finished her interview and I waited for weeks without hearing from them. One day, I was coming down from a telephone pole and spotted another installer-a member of the Militant Action Caucus. I told him I was waiting to hear back, but wondered if they had decided against letting me become a member. He apologized and said, “See, Howard, you’re a mystic”. I was amused, and maybe even flattered, although I'm maybe really only a mystic wannabe.

The Zero is a crown, and you all have your hands on it. Once you realize that nothing negates itself into a harmoniously balanced set of opposites, then you can begin to see why it is symbolized as a circle, and then you can start to layer things which correspond to the principle of balanced opposites, and you can see how they actually all perfectly harmonize in spectacular ways. Like the hours of the day, digital roots of fibonacci, the intervals contained in two octaves, the zodiac, the origin of the universe and its eternal self creation is that breathing between hot and cold. I recently uploaded a video which contains a drawing of my understanding of these relationships while I play a song about inheriting the universe. lol But uhh, yeah, its literally what this video is about, and it's true and its full understanding is worthy of some singing and I have often dreamed of festivals to keep it's memory alive within a culture.

Whenever I listen to an especially well put together piece of music, hear a beautiful quote about the universe, or even hear a deeply profound verse during a Qur’an recitation, I get this sometimes overwhelmingly intense euphoric feeling starting at the top center of my head that radiates outward. Not sure if this is related to the flow state described. If it is, I can relate to forming a tolerance for these states. Sometimes I’ll have to stop listening to a track for a few weeks or even months in order to achieve the same feeling.

I totally agree that most everyone wants to feel special and don’t actually Wish to awake and especially do not want to make the efforts required to awaken. I disagree totally about there not being special groups and societies across history that stand as storehouses of knowledge and schools that keep certain practices and teachings alive. There are men and women that have awakened and live on a higher level than other men. They can actually help ppl. I see no reason to think that G. Didn’t hold this understanding. Bennett obviously believed there were special brotherhoods and you even enumerate a couple of those societies. G. said everything begins with a group and that work outside a group is rare if not impossible. Sure the Sarmoung may be a clever myth but I see no reason why such groups would not exist. You are right in that the esoteric circle of humanity doesn’t have to be in the mountains of Asia. It can be with anyone who can awaken and knows how to awake. And there definitely are secrets and secret teachings and practices handed down and trusted to those who can be trusted and able to receive such teachings. You don’t get to brush away these ideas with one clever video.

The key for me (and as it transpires, the friends in the talk) is to try, to the best of my abilities, through the sharpest of my skills AND with the least of my participation, infuse any performance with the true purpose of Art in general: the updating to the present moment and the deep remembrance of the source and our relation to it. Using the “universe is like a video game, God is the lead programmer” metaphor or even the literal concept of a Matryoshka Brain Dyson Sphere From an “energy used”perspective, I would be curious to find out if the force described in this talk generally pushes people towards optimum efficiency when it comes to computing the “code” that is their experience of their life. This force would be things that essentially make AI able to attempt to predict your next move. In the grand scheme of things, predictable movement of individuals could almost certainly work towards netting the system the most surplus energy via manipulatable people. This could be achieved by things such as encouraging habits, oppressive religious beliefs, or even socially engineering certain topics as “taboo”.

The second shock, grace, that you refer to here around 28:00 reminds me of the surge of epiphanies I had following the death of my mother. For a while there it felt like Contemplating her suffering was sort of opening a channel for information to flow into my mind with a laser focus. I totally quit drinking cold turkey shortly before her death (cirrhosis). After she passed I got this urge to attempt to rediscover “belief”. As someone who swore off religion years ago, I never thought I’d see my 31 y/o self sober and reading into the esoteric meanings of verses from the Qur’an (which I recently read and realized how beautiful it is, but that’s a whole other conversation).

For those that are curious about the difference between Dari and Farsi...Dari is short for Darbari which means 'of the royal court.' When the Muslim Arabs invaded east they set up kingship in Farsi speaking lands. The Arab rulers had to learn the local language and in doing so inevitably mixed in letters from their own alphabet (like 'Q' which is not in Farsi) and had their own style of pronunciation. Since it was mostly spoken in the royal courts its was called Darbari. Over time it grew to be its own dialect.

@@TheNineSidedCircle So from what i understand The Divan was written after the Muslims invaded Persian lands so you're right there would definitely be Arabic letters and words found in that body of work. From cursory research the letter Qaf did not exist in Avestan or Proto-Iranian languages, but was later introduced by Dari. The Iranians pronounce the letter ق as 'ghaf' rather than 'qaf' which probably means its not native to their tongue. Terribly interesting subject Im surprised there isnt more definitive research on the matter. I haven't watched your discussions for quite awhile. That said, some time ago, I asked your opinion of Idries Shah, whose books I devoured when I was in my twenties. You had a less than flattering opinion of him. The older I get, the less bound to any system, tradition or teaching I become, so I don't have a horse in the Idries Shah race anymore. Yet with that, I found his books to be incredibly educational. They still affect my mind in positive ways. But I'm wondering...are there any of your video discussions you can point me to that fully go into Shah and his teachings? I'd love to know more about why you don't appear to regard him in the best light. I'd be very curious about that. I'm aware that a recent book has been published outing Shah and his father as being hucksters for the Sufi Way. Secondly, on a side note, I'm also wondering if you've ever discussed the remarkable scoundrel, Gary Chicoine, who is said to have stepped up as the group's new teacher after Bennett died. For awhile, I was in intense email communication w/ Chicoine before he died. He was quite something. He was undoubtedly hated and vilified in the various Sufi and 4th Way communities online. Maybe it's me being a natural iconoclast, but because he was so shunned, I became that much more interested in him, which is why we eventually made contact. Btw, he once published a hilarious account of how he played a prank on Idries Shah! I may be able to dig it up if you're interested.

[Mushtaq] I don't often talk about Shah these days, him having passed away and all. I find his brother Omar Ali's work more interesting. You might ask yourself how much of what still effects you his work or is it the work of the various authors he collected and republished in his books. As to Chicoine, I read one of his books and that was enough for me.

Good point! Come to think of it, most of what affected me [and does to this day] were indeed the sayings and writings of various Sufi authors he paraphrased.. @@TheNineSidedCircle Sarmoun Brotherhood is a fantasy. Gurdjieff got his bag of tricks from the Naqshsbandis, and the Orthodox Christians. Don't be fooled by mirages. There you go. 3.

Ah,so we should just take your conclusions as dogma then? What is your evidence for your conclusions being factual? Why did you not mention the materials he cribbed from the Buddhists, or the various things he lifted from Theosophists? This is the problem with offering conclusions without evidence. You just end up looking like another dogmatist. Also, your attempt and drawing the conclusions from the talk do not represent the actual conclusions we drew, you missed the most salient points. It makes me think you watched a few minutes of the talk and jumped to some hasty generalizations.

yeah, no. I figured you were a troll with your first post, but I figured I'd give you a little rope and see if you were capable of carrying on a rational conversation rather than trowing a low grade tantrum. I guss not. You last comment will not get posted, nor will any others you make. We don't put up with ad hominem BS. So you can go back to your cave and be mad about it.

Correct me if I’m wrong but doesn’t the Arabic language contain a large amount of words with multiple (sometimes up to 10+) meanings? Sometimes I wonder if that contextual ambiguity was the reason for selecting Arabic as the intended language for delivering the message of the Qur’an.

Semitic languages (Hebrew, Aramaic, Arabic, etc) build their words from triliteral roots (three consonant words) Which are almost always verbs and grom which other words are derived.

[Mushtaq] I suspect that there several groups that have an ancient secret or two. They just don't hang out in the mountains of the Hindu Kush so much these days.

Pretty sure groups within the US gov running special access programs have figured out the true nature of reality and have created technology to tap into/access it to some degree.
