No doubt song ki originality se chhed chhad nahi honi chahiye but Rana ji ka tark bhi sachayee se pare hi lag raha hai. Geographically Kangra se yadi Chamba jana hai to Jammu to aata hi nahi. Rasta ya to Nurpur se hai ya Pathankot se hi cut jata hai.

Ranaji is absolutely correct. Even I had wondered about the geographical incongruity of Mohit Chauhan’s otherwise beautiful rendering. However in distorting the lyrics he has trivialised the sorrow of the period and the reason the song must have been composed. Before Himachal became a state, Chamba was never directly connected to, or had much in common with Shimla or that region of HP. In fact there was no reason for people of Kangra or Chamba to travel to Shimla, and their travel outside was restricted to Punjab or Jammu. However, Jammu, Chamba and Kangra were culturally and linguistically closer to each other and matrimonial relationships were quite common between these regions. This is a folk song narrating ordeals of the life of ordinary people. It is a fact that earlier many girls from the Jammu region used to be married in the Chamba/ Kangra region and vice-versa. In my village too there were many ladies in the older generation who were from Chamba and who had not returned to their parental homes for several years because of the difficulties of travel. It is said that some brides used to carry with them a token piece of wood to be consigned to their pyres as it would not be possible for their loved ones to reach in case of their death. Such was the pain of separation, which the present generation cannot feel. This song speaks of that pain when a girl (who possibly is about to get married) puts the question to her mother. She is not aware of the distance and wonders whether it would be possible to return. However its nice to enjoy all versions of the song and many folk songs have different versions which all touch the heart.
