Join me as I explore Owl Island, a magical winter haven in the middle of Lake Ontario. Using a mix of car and ferry travel, I’ll seek out up to six incredible owl species that call this island home during the colder months.
The Short-eared Owl is a medium-sized raptor with a distinctive creamy-buff chest and brown back, found on every continent except Antarctica and Australia. These fascinating birds even show up on remote islands like Hawaii! Known for their moth-like flight and low glides over open fields, they migrate south to Owl Island thanks to its abundant meadow vole population.
Along the way, I’ll meet fellow birders and share in the thrill of the chase. Will we succeed in spotting this magnificent owl?
