    Best Buy had some Arrow and slightly more SF titles but they were my bread and butter place for mainstream releases.

    As long as people keep buying physical media from companies like Shout Factory, Arrow Video, The Criterion Collection, etc... then physical media will continue to live on and on.

    Movie studios are jealous of the price video games sell for. I don’t believe $5 bargain bins ever should have happened, but $30+ for a movies is kind of ridiculous.

    $ sucks but it’s the principle of not being able to even get them because scalpers buy all the copies then I got to pay double on eBay. Amazon sucks

    I mostly tapped out in 2023, which I found a better year than this one for 4k releases that I was interested in. I've been collecting blurays since it's inception and 4ks since it's inception and I just saw the Willow steel book for $65 and I don't collect steel books so I wasn't doing that. I have many blurays and 4ks in an ottoman because I have a highly curated selection of my favorites on 4k and blurays and I'll just upgrade the blurays I have to 4ks as they come out and otherwise I'm not hauling blurays that I may not like or watch.

    Yeah, the price for physical media is up because it's more in demand than when every physical media was cheap. More people are buying physical media because they are sick of all the ads on streaming.

  • @gentlemansomething2886

    Box stores are generally only good for new releases, primarily if you’re a slipcover or steelbook collector, because you can look things over before you decide to buy. The box stores are being taken away from us, partially because of companies promoting streaming that keeps revenue flowing in without the cost of packaging and shipping to retailers. Add to that, Best Buy with their release day “events” whereas people could get the latest limited edition steelbooks- but then Disney decided to meddle with their successful formula, inserting identity politics into their narratives, and consequently losing sales. Limited steelbooks that used to sell out before noon on release day were now taking up shelf space for months because few people wanted them. Instead of identifying that people don’t like being propagandized while watching their entertainment, Best Buy likely chalked it up to “streaming is winning against physical media” and exited that leg of their business. This current, terrible economy is also driving up the cost of everything by large margins, causing more people to have to choose between essentials and luxuries. Personally, I do miss the thrill of the in-store hunt, finding deals or “rare items” in person- but I’m content to support boutique labels online, getting deluxe releases of films I know I like already, or discovering something I’d never seen from the past. There hasn’t been much good “new release” material coming out of Hollywood since Covid anyway.

    Everything is getting too expensive. I collect music, vinyl prices are insane and I won't ever pay those prices, cds have also went up, but I'm lucky to find a great ebay seller that has amazing prices and offers 25% off when you order 2 or more plus free shipping, so this year I bought alot of metal cds. So I collect movies as well, the glory days are gone, those fun cheap black friday days are behind us. So, I get what you mean by NOT FUN ANYMORE. Also, there's no more smaller business's anymore, those mom & pop brick n mortar stores where as a collector you could walk in with $50 and you & your friends could come out with a bagful of movies, THOSE DAYS ARE ALL BUT A MEMORY. So the hunting aspect is gone, and that was one of the fun aspects of being a collector. Now all we have is Walmart, they don't stock anything on time, prices are crawling higher & higher, resellers buy up everything and resell it at triple cost (and I don’t know who's stupid enough pay that lol). I still collect movies, mostly blu rays, some dvds, a small anount of VHS, but I thrift flea markets or yard sales or thrift stores mostly, the in store prices are out of control. I got into collecting music & movies because it was a cheap thing to collect 10 or more years ago. Now it's a hurdle for your wallet.

  • @vinylated
    @vinylated 10 วันที่ผ่านมา

    I agree with all of it. Not picky necessarily about the slips and steels tho, but that's just me. I think blu ray will be where it's at. Prices are still low. You want me to pay over $30 for a film then it better be a sh** hot title lol. I only buy a title that I know I'll watch more than once. Comedies on 4k I don't think I need, cuz I love Uncle Buck but do I really need that with hdr when i already have it on blu ray?? Lots of questions to ask ourselves. I'm sad that eventually we won't be able to just walk into a store and pick up a movie. I didn't know about Target so I was miffed when I walked in there one day to see no movies anymore. Now I use Gruv, not so much Amazon to pre order as I've done that with them only for them to say they sold out come release day, so Gruv for the win. Going online and following Instagram accounts like Dawn Of The Disc's or whatever it's called so I have to find out when the next film is coming out just isn't as fun. Times have changed and people want to keep paying for a subscription plus paying multiple times to rent a movie that they love over and over and not realize that they are actually paying for more for it. So I don't know. But yeah if I see a 4k now for $40 and the blu ray is $12 then I'm gonna think with my wallet. Great video man 👍

    I haven't upgraded my system for 4K yet, though a new TV is expected for next year. I've started buying Blu-rays again, a few each month, but they're selected on if they're not readily available elsewhere. For instance, I love Godzilla minus one, but it's a click away on Amazon Prime. I replaced my US version DVD of the Crow with a Blu-ray because I no longer have a chipped player to play it, and looking at the titles available, there's about 3 percent that I would consider purchasing, and that's titles like Rambo, any Clint Eastwood movie or Alien. Those movies were guaranteed to show up on somebody's channel over the year, but now they're being squeezed out of the public eye. One of the best sources for old shows and movies has been TH-cam, which, in my opinion, are more entertaining than modern stuff made for a 'modern' audience.

    I rarely pre order or buy on release week. Unless it's something I just have to have I wait for a sale or better yet if I can find a movie at the pawn shop. I regularly find 4ks at the pawn shop for $4-$8. It might not be a steelbook or even have a slip but I'd rather pay $5 for a movie then pay $35 for the exact same movie.

    I splurged and made the effort to obtain Godzilla Minus One and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire steelbooks. I don't normally go for steelbooks, but I am a crazed Godzilla fanatic. The amount of delays and late delivery messages taught me buying movies online is problematic and a hassle. If buying movies in a physical store is becoming obsolete, then next year if it doesn't rebound, it will be the end.

  • @dustbin5044

    I'm on a fixed income because my job is refusing to hand out annual raises in the face of rising costs of goods and services. So I am with you. 2025 will the year of reckoning for out of control consumer good prices. Either the prices need to come back down to something reasonable, or I will join you in the effort to close thy wallet and bring the industry to its knees. Being forced to buy a 4K combo pack just to get the blu-ray is getting on my nerves. My room can only fit a 32 inch TV, maybe a 37 inch TV if I squeeze every inch on my TV table to capacity. And there is no such thing as a 32 inch 4K TV, they don't exist. I actually prefer a regular DVD because regular DVD's usually have the 2.0 stereo option which is ideal for my modest component system.

    Yeah man, I share a lot of the same sentiments as you. Buying 4K Blu-rays is not as fun as it once was, especially blind buy purchases because a little more than half the time it ends up being a one time only watch flick for me, especially if the movie was pretty bad to begin with. The high prices pretty much became my last straw. With exception of boutique releases from labels like Arrow or Kino Lorber, I think I'll switch over to digital media with Apple TV (formerly iTunes). While yes the audio quality is inherently inferior to lossless audio on disc, and also you don’t truly own your digital movie purchases, digital movies most of the time are way cheaper than their disc counterparts and (at least on Apple TV) the video quality surprisingly sits in between regular Blu-ray and 4K Blu-ray quality, and honestly that’s more than enough for me to enjoy my movies. 😉

    I order 95% of my movies online. Sometimes I might spot a steel book edition in Walmart that I like. Otherwise I use Amazon and Gruv, and sometimes Grindhouse for imports. We do most of our shopping online, retail stores generally suck for choice.
